See how easy it is to combine Pan Pastels and Colored Pencil for realistic and softly blended paintings or drawings! The pan pastels are not as messy as regular pastels which is perfect if you hate the dry chalky feel of pastels as I always have!
The Pan Pastels I'm using in this video were provided to me by Pan Pastel. The opinions in this video are my own, this is not otherwise a paid sponsorship/promotion.

I love how you painted his fur. I can relate to what you said about using different colors. I remember painting a gray squirrel and I thought I saw purple in his fur. At first, I was like, I can' put purple in a gray animal. That'll look silly. But I did it anyway. I kept it very soft and translucent and it looked good.

This is so helpful. I always have trouble getting colored pencil to show up well over pan pastels. Now I see it may be because I was not spraying fixative over the pastel. Thanks!

I have a small set of pan pastels coming this week. I asked on a Facebook group for pan pastels about using a spray fixative and some relied to Not use a fixative at all. A few mentioned the spectrafix. If I like the pan pastels enough to get more colors I’ll order the spectrafix then. I already have pastel mat and vellum Bristol board. We’ll see what happens. I think I’ll like the pan pastels. Very good video. I’m an avid viewer of yours. The videos are very helpful.

I love this piece 😍 Your videos are always so informative and thorough, makes me happy everytime 😋 I haven't tried combining pan pastel and colored pencils like that, only tried using pan pastels for the backgrounds, I might just have to try it out 😃 I always struggle with sanded paper, as I dont like the gritty look, I hadn't thought about blending with my finger or a sofft tool, so that's something I definitely have to try out! 😃

Thanks for your tips, I've always wondered if you can use spectra fix between layers, I've always thought it was just for the final layer! Also it's nice to know that you can use the brush and pencil products with pastels as the base 😊

Absolutely love all your tutorials Lisa and I love listening to your pencil podcasts too. I love my new pan Pastels but I also love using my polychromos with zest it pencil blend for a more painterly look. I wonder if it is possible to use my polychromo pencils over the top of my pan pastels and still be able to blend with OMS. I also have spectra fix so I was thinking I could do the pan pastel and a painting spray with spectra fix and then apply my polychromos and blend with OMS . I guess the only thing to do would be to try it, I thought I would ask you in case you have tried it already. I use clairefontaine pastel mat as my support. Thanks for all your hard work producing great tutorials.

Is there a way to finish/seal PanPastels so it doesn't have to be framed behind glass? for example, could I use PanPastels on a wooden panel then spray with a fixative?

Excellant tutorial! I have been enjoying mixing pastels with colored pencil or with watercolor. Does the Spectrum fixative work well with varnishing over colored pencil like the Advanced Colored pencil fixative? I am curious cause I notice the the later sometimes gets cloudy. On some of my pencil paintings I have varnished them just like oil paintings. By the way I am so glad to see polar bears especially since there are 2 to paint in my pile.

Hi Lisa! Now I'm confused. You mentioned most of your blues are warm blues but then you said they lean closer to green on the color wheel. I thought warm blues lean towards violet and cool blues lean towards green... can you elaborate? I love your videos :)
@Lachri
@Lachri 5 лет назад
This is actually complicated. There are different ways to describe what is cool or warm. I go with an over simplified way of looking at things. For me, I describe warm as anything closer to yellow on the color wheel and anything cool as closer to purple to the color wheel. There are absolutely exceptions to this and different ways to describe or explain colors. After over 20 years of teaching I have found that the more simple, the easier for the student to progress. When it comes to art there are those who like to sort of micromanage and argue about every little thing, then twist it into a method or description that is so over the top confusing that it further confuses the student. I've found more people progress by keeping things simple.

Wonderful tutorial!! 😄 Love the painting so much .🐻 I had a question though, would using pastel sticks and colored pencils work the same? Or do Pan Pastels have a different composition? 🤔
@RamoArt
@RamoArt 5 лет назад
Pan Pastels have a weird adhesive property that you really can't fully understand until you've tried them. They will even stick to smooth drawing paper! The way they blend with oil based pencils makes me think there might be some oils in them.

you said "most blues I'm using are warm blues so they tend to be more on the green side of the color wheel" (something like that...) I think that's wrong, right? If a blue tone is more on the green side it's actually cold blue. ;) It would be warm if it was more on the red side...
@Lachri
@Lachri 5 лет назад
Nope, closer to purple would be cooler, closer to green is warmer :)
@marcotronic
@marcotronic 5 лет назад
@@Lachri I strongly disagree. You may agree that red is definitely considered a warmer color than green, isn't it?! Then how could adding a warmer color to blue result in a colder blue? (Which would be the case according to your statement) Please just look up some color theory and you'll find: A blue that has more red in it (purple-ish blue) is warm, a blue that has more green in it is a colder blue. I'm really wondering how you can say the complete opposite :)
@Riccardo-mn1yl
@Riccardo-mn1yl 5 лет назад
@@marcotronic There isn't exactly an agreement on which blue is "cool" and which is "warm". Most artbooks I read described Purplish-blues as "warm", nonetheless, many artists see greenish blues as warm blues. Anyway, I don't think that there's a "right" or "wrong" way to see it. 😄👨🏻‍🎨
@marcotronic
@marcotronic 5 лет назад
@@Riccardo-mn1yl after reading a lot of articles and forum discussions it seems this is indeed something artists argue a lot about and there are those who share Lisa's opinion and also a lot of people sharing my opinion (=mixing blue with red (a warm color) results in a warmer blue). So it seems we are both right and there is no right or wrong here (though I can never be "converted" to think or conviced that a greenish blue is warmer than a reddish blue :) It just doesn't make any sense to me at all, haha :)
@corvuscorone7735
@corvuscorone7735 5 лет назад
Marcotronic, I did a double take over that as well ;) That is not how I learnt colour theory, but there seems to be some debate, so, each to their own. Teal to me is way a cooler shade of blue than violet-blue. Red is the warmest colour, so anything where red is added gets warmer, blue is the coolest colour, so anything where blue gets added gets colder. Yellow is cooler than red, ergo, if I add yellow to blue, it is still colder than if I add red to blue. But as I said, to each their own.

Does the sanded paper eat through your pencils faster? I've been hesitant to try it because of that, I have a limited budget and can't afford to replace my pencils very often.
@Lachri
@Lachri 5 лет назад
Sort of, but the pigment lays down way faster. If I had to put 5 layers to get the same amount of coverage I'm pretty sure I would have eaten through nearly as much pencil working on smoother paper.
