Just fixed mine today. 77,000 miles on my 2005 TJ Sport. Used the butter lid piece and shrink tubing but when I reassembled it and installed it, if I would moved the blinker lever, it turned the fog lights on. Too much thickness. Pulled it apart again, removed the butter lid piece and tubing then shrunk another piece of tubing only around the lever, reassembled and walla, it works like a champ. Just love driving that Jeep. Great fix. Thanks for the video.
This was perfect. Just got a 2005 LJ and put fog lights back on it wired to the factory wiring. Once I put the fuse back in I was having exactly the problem described in the video. I was easily able to follow the instructions outlined here and fixed everything better than new. Thank you so much for such a good video 😎
It works! It really was easy after the fact. Word of advice, the switch locations matter. For the newbies like me, the switches (white pieces) have specific spots/slots that allow the turn signal to move, the headlights to turn up and down, etc. Before you put the assembly back in, make sure everything turns as it should, check the blinkers and headlights, took me three tries to get the switches arranged so they could move as they should. When I put them back in, I basically blocked the movement bc I didn’t realize there is path the switches have to follow.
This was exactly what I needed. Great video, excellent talking points and very detail oriented. The close up shots were perfect. I watched this several times as I did this process on my LJ switch.
This was an excellent demonstration, and exactly what I needed to see. I didn't want to have to replace the switch, but all other troubleshooting led to dead ends. Thank you very much!
Will be fixing this tomorrow morning, got too late to take care of it tonight. Temp solution: With the Jeep parked for the night. - To turn off the fog lights until you can fix it, just put the arm up or down in the blinking position, it will turn the fogs off and won't wear down your battery. Thanks for posting this.
THANK YOU! I had previously done the repair filling in the divot with JB Weld as shown by others since I did not have a heat gun or heat shrink tubing. It worked for about a year or so but the issue came back. With this repair, you can do it all in day rather than wait for JB to cure. Working fine.
This is great! I’ve got 3 of those complete units in my garage that I’ve replaced over the years on my 2004 TJ. After the last one failed, I just pulled the relay. Looks like a great project for a winter afternoon! Thanks!
What a great video. Can’t thank you enough for doing this. I had basically given up on my fog lights. Several years ago I bought a new multifunction switch thinking that would cure the fog lights “magically” turning on. After a week or two same issue. I was so annoyed I just disconnected the fog lights. Found your video this AM so decided to give it a try. Perfect! Fog lights are back! This issue must be a design flaw in that switch. That part on my new multifunction switch looked just like yours so doubt that it’s a wear issue. Anyway thank for your help. Much appreciated.
Glad the video helped. I had pulled the fuse on mine out of frustration and then figured out the fix. Just glad the video is getting people back out there on the trails. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Peace.
Added fog lights on my 05 for the first time and found out they stayed on even with everything off. This worked like a charm. I used a sliver of plastic from a dealership tag. Thanks
Thank you so much for this. I have been debating on buying new versus fixing because I couldn't find the right video to fix it. Now I'm going to give it a shot and hope for the best.
Send the switch back and save some money, friend. Or try the fix first and (if it works for you) then make the return. No shame in saving money. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a positive comment. Peace.
Wow! It works! Good point about taking a picture of the internal switches. You may want to mention that when you take the picture of the switch es that you note the position of the stick as it affects the switch positions…thanks for your video!
Superb! If Jeep used people like yourself to engineer its products we'd have a much simpler and better world, but their goal is maximizing the bottom line. Hopefully, you're making more money than they would pay you anyway. The shrink tubing is a brilliant application. Now on to the CEL light LOL!
You are far too kind. I hope the video helped fix your Jeep and got you back out on the road/trails safely. Comments like this keep me making videos. Thanks!
@@HNXMedia I finally solved the CEL problem without cost by determination, imagination and using similar approaches to yours. Got a two year pass. I'd like to convert to manual locking hubs, eliminating all the useless work all that mass does when not 4 wheeling, but the parts alone are nearly two grand now. It's difficult to believe a means for using the existing outer axles can't be employed.
I thought I could easily do this with these instructions. My fog lights would come on randomly. Completed the procedure and then none of my lights work. No headlight no turn signal, ... Ok looks like I fixed it. I put a little too much shrink wrap. Took it apart for the third time cleaned off lots of grease. Put it back it. NOW it works. Thanks for the video
this really worked and saved me hundreds of dollars, definitely take pictures as i had to put it back together twice as to get all pieces working correctly. Good informative video, thanks for helping me with my problem.
Glad the video helped. It can be a little tedious and you need to be patient, but as long as you pay attention (and take photos as you suggested) then everything works out just fine. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome. It worked. Unplugging the electrical connectors was a challenge because I knew that i couldn't screw that step up or it would cost me a lot of money.
Sweet! Thank you for posting the details on the switch, and thanks to those who commented on fit and checking the position of the switches. For what it's worth I used JB Weld steel epoxy with a bit of sanding, all good. Thank you for saving me some grief and keep well!
Worked like a charm! Had an issue when I put it back together the first time where headlights were staying on even when switch is off. This was due to the ball portion of the light control arm not being aligned/inserted into the groove in the long skinny piece on the right hand side. After that, everything worked besides turn signals. Found out all other lights work without the keys in the ignition besides the turn signals ha. Thanks for the video!
Very helpful tutorial. However, I still do not understand how the switch is actually turning the lights on. Is it closing a circuit with the little piece that sticks through the inner circuit board?
Man, you knocked that fix out in 15 minutes! You were on your "A" game for sure! Glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to drop a positive comment. Stay well.
Well, damn. If I would have thought about using a credit card, I wouldn't have had to cut up my good butter lid. LOL. PERFECT idea! Glad the video helped. Time to get back on the trails. Peace!
@@L8bro LOL. Love it! Glad it helped. It may seem like a daunting job at first, but as long as you take your time, there is nothing to it. It is awesome to hear positive comments like yours. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Stay safe out there.
Hmm this looks great. I have repaired mine a few times, but rather than building up the indent as you did, I was building up the plastic knob part that pushes up (breaks the circuit by lifting it up when the switch is off) using JB Weld. Unfortunately with the method I used, I was repairing it at least once a year and sometimes it took me a few tries to get the size just perfect (either the lights would stay on, or they would not come on at all, rinse and repeat until I got it right, then it fails again in a year) ... Anyway... thank you. This gives me one more thing to try before I give up and wire it to a separate switch.
Thanks for watching. I have faith that you could tackle this repair. Slow, steady, and take pics along the way so that you know how it goes back together. Good luck! 👍
I can confirm that this works... sort of. It fixed my fog light problem, but it prevented my headlights from turning on. the heatshrink was pushing up a bit on the vertical sliding switch for the low beam/ marker lights, so I had to file a bit of plastic off of it. Everything works fine now :)
Awesome! Well, not awesome that you have the same problem, but awesome that you found the video. Check back and let me know how it turned out. Seems to have been successful for a bunch of folks (by reading their comments). Hoping it is successful for you as well. Peace.
Hey I have rebuilt a 94 YJ that is still in the family . Recently acquired a 2004 Sahara on a lean so I got her at a very good price . Fogs not working bulbs missing. Knew it! I planned on going into stalk control and take a look then found your viddy. You saved me a lot of time and effort. Thanks ! They all have their common problems . I am Also replacing Fuel Rail as the Damper(very common) is leaking onto the Manifold. Some plug it off. Not sure the right way to go. BTW is that a Pom hair @1:05 ? Mine helps me drive also lol.
Glad the video helped. I had never heard of the fuel rail issue, I might need to look into that on mine. And yes, that indeed is Pom hair. I wish I could give you a second "thumbs-up" for catching that. Cleaning up Pom hair is the story of my life and I wouldn't have it any other way :) Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. Time to get back on the trails. Peace.
Thanks. Fixed in about 20 minutes. I only used the shrink tube, 1/4 inch diameter by 3/4 long, since I don't have lights hooked to the switch, figured it would be enough to keep pressure on it so my little green dash light doesn't come on.
Great work, my fog light issues is now in the past thank to you. Although, I didn’t go the rubber route. Instead I used JB Weld plastic bond and then brought it down with a dremel.
Glad it helped. It seems like a daunting process at first, but once you get inside the controls, it is fairly easy as long as you take your time. Thanks for watching and commenting. Peace.
Thanks! If I was that dashing, I would plaster my mug all over every video I make. Alas, I am not, so my "face made for radio" will remain hidden. Thanks for making my day. Peace.
I cannot remember, I just used the size I had that "barely" slipped over that piece. That way I knew it would hold firm. Sorry I could not be more helpful with this answer.
@@HNXMedia thank you, I was looking up where to find it and obviously it's sold n diff sizes but, they sell them in variety size packs so I will have a few diff sizes to choose from. Honestly I never really knew bout that stuff, pretty cool shit fer real. I appreciate your vid cuz I thought my dad was crazy when he said the fog lights come on themselves 😄 Thank you for you help, let ya know if it works.
Going to try this out as soon as I get a chance as I’m having this problem had to replace my battery twice and last night my neighbor notice my got lights were on so I think this is the problem as I put the Tutsis nap to the right god lights turn of & on
Probably not much help to you now, but maybe for others. I didn't have to completely remove the red clips - just slide them out enough to access the secondary lock tab underneath (a little less than a 1/4"). Then when once you re-plug the connector, just push the red tab back in to lock it.
