Solved my mystery! it was the 2 ring and three ring problem. I used a three ring in my camera and got only a static noise in my video. no way to fix that at all? :(
There are some audio cleaning tools out there that can reduce noise, but if there's a lot of static (or only static) it's probably not fixable. I'd be happy to take a listen and see if it's something that can be fixed. Shoot me a DM on IG @nick_mags

Thanks for making this video. The instructions that came with my MOVO might have the answer, but some of that stuff is not explained. There was a TRSS cable that they were referring to but none of the cables had a cable labeled "trss." I had a no-audio issue and it was because I was using the smartphone cable to plug into the camera.

Super helpful, I could not understand why my external mike would work on my GoPro 8 but not on my Canon camcorder. The 3 ring vs 2 ring connector was something I would never have thought of. The part descriptions for Amazon were bang on, and I bought the adapter. Great job Cheers!!
I put this clip on mic for the camcorder recording and all my video came out with no voice recording! I watched your video to find out it is the 2 ring thing to the camcorder when the clip on mic is 3 ring. Just ordered the adapter thanks for the tip!

When I plugged my camcorder into my laptop, my laptop recognized it as an android device so it's probably the TRRS connector problem. I ordered an adaptor, which I never would have thought to do without this video, and should have it tomorrow. We shall see - thanks! I edit to add after receiving the TRRS adaptor: though I am using a camcorder and your video said the TRS/TRRS issue was a smart phone issue, that was the issue with my "vlog" camcorder.
2:55 was the solution to my issue. i had just bought an aux cord to connect my rode video micro to my iPhone. both ends had the 3 ring connector. i needed a 2 ring connector for the rode mic. thankfully i had an adapter piece from a lav mic set that solved the issue. thanks so much for this informative and straight-forward video. one RU-vidr to another, it's much appreciated.
I have a three ring connector for my microphone that I plug into my iPhone. For some reason, the audio only is picked up from The normal iPhone microphone not not from the one that I connected to it. Do I have to turn on a certain setting or use a different adapter?
Someone mentioned to me that a recent iPhone iOS update messed something up with external mics. I don't know which update, but if you've done everything I suggest and you're still having issues, it could be due to that. In my own testing, I've also noticed that the external mic works fine when recording a video. But when I tried using the mic for a Facebook live, it used the built-in mic. This seems to suggest iPhones are prone to software issues with external mics.

I was really frustrated and I thought the cable I bought is just isn't working until 3:14 I suddenly remembered the external mic I bought provide two different cable and the one I'm supposed to use was still in the mic pouch lol. The video was super useful to learn about possible problems. None of those applied to me though. I am having no sound with a new mic, so new cords, I checked everything you suggested and still no sound :( is there any settings that need to be checked on the smartphone that could affect? any other possibility when none of the ones you addressed seem to be the problem? What mic are you using? What kind of smartphone? On the smartphone, try using a few different apps to see if it could be software related. Like a voice memo app. Smartphones can be finicky sometimes, and software issues can cause problems when trying to use an external mic.
@@disciplinapositivachile-cu1263 One other thing that can cause no audio with wireless mics is if the transmitter and receiver aren't synced / paired. Sometimes they don't come paired properly from the factory. Check the owner's manual for pairing instructions and see if that solves it.

I realized that the receiver has a headphone icon in the recording output socket and the headphone socket has a different icon, so I had the wrong connection. Thanks to your suggestion to explore the paring situation I was able to notice that. I really appreciate your help in the video and after I posted my question!!!!

👍🏽 💕 So, happy I found this! YOU SAVED ME! I could not get my lavalier, to work. Turns out it was a 3 ring issue. And with the 2 ring converter in hand, I got from Amazon. I now have near-perfect sound. Not to mention. I now have more confidence in my voice sounding well for my upcoming eCourse series. Yay!
OMGEEE! So Just recorded a vid and there is NO SOUND.....NOW I KNOW! I need a 2 ringer lapel mic. I feel better....still annoyed but a lot wiser because of this video and I will never have this issue again. thank you for sharing this tip!!!!!

I have this problem with my usb mic I bought just recently. I bought a usb adapter plugged in to my phone. It seems to be working fine but then to my horror my phone didn't record any sound. Can you help me pls?
I’m not certain a usb mic can be used with a phone. What brand and model is the mic? Could you instead plug the mic into a computer and record the audio on the computer (using garage band on a Mac or audacity on Mac or PC)? Then you can sync the audio and video while editing, and you’re good to go.
Yeah Nick, I recorded about 6 different videos and the first fourth and last was the only ones with audio. My iPhone kept stopping the video due to searching for internet. I turned the WIFI back on and the phone wouldn’t continue without stopping. I got through all the vids and realized some had the missing audio. The mic I have is brand new out of the box. HELP PLEASE!

Hi, Thanks for the video, it is very helpful. I'm trying to make my first RU-vid video. There's great sound from the headphone, but no sound from the camera. Should I be hearing audio from the camcorder without the headphone? If I upload the video will it have the sound I hear from the headphone even though I can't hear any without the headphone. AWESOME! I had the issue of plugging into the Camera adapter then the phone. Unplugged and used the 3 ring only and problem sorted. The only issue I have with this ''Solid'' 2 mic adapter is that the sound doesn't sound any different to my phone. Which is fine though as when I walk around the area then my voice doesn't have to travel. It's stuck to my top. Thanks Nick - Regards Nick
Hello my friend. Not sure if you are still answering comments… but I have a Sony ZV e10 camera. And when I plug in my rode video mic pro. It never switches to it.. it stays on the cameras internal mic no matter what I do.. the connector is correct and power is on .. I tested the mic itself inside of my Rodecaster pro and it works. So I know the mic works. Any suggestions would be super gratefully appreciated 🙏🎶
i have a boya m1 and the adapter i have is a usb type c to 3.5mm...it does not work...what you think is the issue?...the adapter is used to connect the mic into my pc cos my pc does not have a headphone jack
Maybe there's a system setting somewhere to tell it to use that microphone. Find the audio settings and see if you can find an option to select the input for the microphone.
I tried everything in the video. Checked the batteries, and did the TRRS to TRS thing but still not working. I have a6400 and i'm using Boya M1-Pro. Both are completely new. I don't understand what's the problem. Can you please help? If I'm missing something?

I just bought a Boya BY-M1 and apparently the audio doesn't work when using my phone video cam. However, the mic works fine when using audio recording only. Any thoughts on what might be the problem? Thanks!
This helped me a lot! I didn't know that the connectors for Phone and DSLR/Camera are different. I was confused when I bought a wireless mic and there's two connectors in it, turns out one is for Camera and the other one for smartphone. Thank you so much!
