I'm really glad Google came out with this great solution for the C Wire. Much easier then rewiring a brand new wire.

I recommend venstar's add a wire! It works on all wifi smart thermostats that need a C wire. I've used it on nest and honeywell.

Thank you for this step-by-step guide. I have two thermostats and having the same power issue on both. Will one nest power connector be enough for both thermostats and should I be installing the nest power connector on the same area on the HVAC circuit board? Thanks (again) in advance.

In the official install video it mentions that if you have multiple thermostats you should install it at the Zone Controller. See 2,45 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xlx2Um6D1Z8.html

Did this at my house! If you get Confused on what wires you have my first recommend to go to your Nest remove the nest and take a picture of what wires are connected to the thermostat because they’re the same wires that are down in your basement take a picture of that go down to your basement furnace and compare the wires colors and all of the diagram in the instructions and you can do it very easy took like 20 minutes definitely better than putting a new wire for your thermostat! You can do it!

THANK YOU! Glad you said to double check. I did. BUT, somehow i missed that i put the C connector into the G slot. so i had to go back and do that. DUH! 💥ONE THING TO MENTION THO.....I tried to check the nest to make sure everything was good BEFORE i put the cover back on. That said, without the cover the lever that makes the orange light come on (which shows everything is good to go on the HVAC) nest would not detect it. So, i DID have to put the inner cover back on first to check it. And *poof* all wires detected and connected per nest. I checked the power and it was slowly going up when not in use. so YAAAAYYY!!! THANK YOU for your great video. I watched the video supplied from google and it seemed much more complicated. Yours made it super duper simple! THANK YOU! 😃

Fun little tidbit of info I learned about when setting mine up. Some systems have a "kill switch" behind the access panel. So if you're trying to test the thermostat and you're getting a no power error try closing up the access panel first.

Luckily we had a c wire ran but never hooked up, both at thermostat as well as furnace. So we avoided extra wire splicing at furnace level, sans hooking up that spare blue wire that was originally ran, but never utilized. Home built 2007. We got lucky. Sadly we had that extender kit and installed it first- before running into AC run issues. Luckily, we took a pre-pic at furnace level, so we "were able to revert", all that extra; in order to just splice in that spare wire. So follow that advice on picture- and be 10000% sure to double check wiring at both thermostat and furnace. Those two pro tips will/can save future headaches and a service call.

You are correct in stating that it may be cheaper than installing a new cable. However if you have access to the thermostat cable pathway I would go that route. In my 2002 built home I had a six wire cable but only four conductors were available upstairs. Had to use some of my cabling skills to understand that the electrician that installed the cable years ago decided to use the remaining two conductors as cable hangers within the wall. Thankfully I was able to use my cabling skills in carefully freeing up the remaining two hidden conductors. Don't get me going into how much I can't stand electricians installing communication cables with staples and such. Lol!

The readings you don't understand at 4:35 are the actual voltages being detected. Vin is the A/C voltage coming into the Power Connector from the transformer on the furnace. The lin I am assuming is for Line voltage in, which looks like DC voltage, minus a decimal point. 3.85 volts DC would be about right to charge the battery and keep the WiFi connected. Nest says the WiFi will drop out if the voltage goes below 3.8 volts. The other two numbers at the bottom??? I don't know. Y looks like a repeat of lin. YP might be how many squirrels are living in your attic...

@@accordxtc319 ; Ok thanks ... Took your advice and ordered one of these from Amazon and installed it yesterday. I can only "assume" it's working since the Nest 3rd gen. t-stat gives no indication in the settings that the NPC is detected like the 2020 model in the video does. The furnace still works as before without any error messages. I guess the only indication I have is that during installation with power to the furnace turned off I noticed the battery voltage dropped slightly by a few hundredths of a volt. After turning the power back on the battery voltage eventually climbed back up again to where it was before. So I guess that's an indication the thermostat is receiving power through the NPC. But I sure wish Nest had given the 3rd gen. model an indicator in the settings confirming the presence of the NPC's installation.

Between the two: Courrier. Why? Parts. No Idea what the future holds but for HVAC newer stuff is currently what is being made/available (so if you have old stuff double check everything to make sure its ok now folks!), and we have all these worldwide shipping issues. I would avoid Mitsu if at all possible for those two reasons alone: for when something goes wrong. It will, just a matter of when. For us, it was the fan. Luckily, it was before all this nonsense- but not being Mitsu, the part was 10x's easier to find, and if it were to occur now, most likely cheaper due to those availability issues. ;)

why do you have two wires going into each terminal? shouldn't you only have wires from the google adapter going into the terminals and the wires you take out of the terminals go into the crimps along with the other wires from the adapter? i came here for help with wiring mine up and am more confused than before.

@TechWithBrett

Just because the wire is blue doesn't mean that it is connected to the C Wire. Verify on your system at the thermostat and furnace what wiring you have first.

i don't get how this thing works. The C wire is required to feed the 24 v back to the thermostat to power it usually . how does this device get power back to the thermostat?
@Dana-cb7vk
@Dana-cb7vk 2 года назад
The splice in unit creates a C wire scenario, without the pain of running a completely fresh wire, is the solution. It is indeed a complicated one, but it plagues all smart thermostats when no C wire is pre ran. You can still run that wire, or may even have an unsued ran, wire. That could be utilized as C with splice in usually pre board where the power wire runs up to a splice/wire nut. So when this device is utilized it takes that 24v and runs it into the box and utilizes another wire (usually AC, sometimes fan but that power is not a constant/common, which is what the C wire is) at thermostat level, and then that wire instead of going to AC would go to C at thermostat level. The box reconfigs it to run both C and AC as it still has a splice into AC at/before board (furnace side). The box just acts as a fancy splice in to allow both C as well as AC to properly function. Just be sure not to blow that board fuse as it will surge to the AC unit and moat likely blow open the power unit, causing AC to constantly run. So be sure to follow its instructions to a T. I hope that helps. It is indeed a complicated fix, but it works.

The Best Connector just pulls power from one of the other lines so it has enough. I heard it's possible to do without this device but I'm no electrician and wouldn't want to try it and break the system.

A better solution is to drop a 2 wire 18 ga inside the wall and come out at the baseboard and buy a 24 volt 40 va plug in transformer. Plug it in to the nearest receptacle.
