Very honest video. Same thing happened with us. Learned something new. Color totally changed after applying dye on the concrete. We picked cola but it changed to rustic.

Final result is stunning. The flaws from the original staining turned out to be a fantastic piece of luck for you. Lessons learned!

I've been reading to use baking soda and water to break up the acid, and not ammonia? I don't know what to do now. Thank you for showing the fail, its more educational sometimes to see this
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 года назад
Both are alkaline agents. You can use a mixture of baking soda/water or a mixture of ammonia/water. When the solution is sprayed down on the active acid, it will change the color of any loose surface acid/liquid and neutralize the acid reaction. Both work just fine. I just heard that baking soda leaves a crusty residue that's harder to clean up than the ammonia. Good luck with your project!

Cool ! Looks nice ! Love it 😊. My acid stain came up with scrubbing and neutralizing in some spots . Totally sad . It’s a basement in a homeowner’s rental house . So I am pressed for time since they want to get this rented yesterday. I’ll try this technique of yours next time . Looks awesome in the end 😊

Sure thing. Just a couple bits of hindsight - I wish I let the stain sit a bit longer to be a little deeper of a burn and I wish I did another whole coat of acrylic. I am going to be clearing out one half at a time to clean and reapply another couple coats of acrylic to get the floor a bit glossier. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You Sir are a Rock Star! Not only did you admit to a initial “Bad job”, you manned up and admitted it! Totally Awesome brother! Mistakes happen, and mistakes are how people learn (most can’t understand that concept) and in this day and age, the kids and “oh well” contractors just walk away, but not you. You turned a “my bad” into a “how awesome”! Your ethics are commendable buddy! I’d hire you in a second if you were near me to fix the staining on our patio! We spent over 8K on a new back patio with a addition (about 80 sqft) to replace our existing 400sqft patio. After our quote, they did the demo and stopped at the sub base. They wouldn’t excavate sub base to match grade and wanted to install the new 4 feet of extended patio 18” above grade to keep a 1/4 bubble slope for a 50’run! It would have elevated the patio 18 inches above the fence base that it ended at. We have narrow sides on our neighborhood homes and we could have literally looked down to the ground on or neighbors side. Our chests would have been visible to our neighbors (that also have 8 feet of yard to the fence. All I could do was laugh. I provided these guys with a faded color match we wanted over a month before the job and he said “sure, we can do that”. On the day of pouring, he then tells me that he probably couldn’t match the colors and that he’d rather just stain so it looks good. We ended up with (mission style stamping) 4 different colors. Individual “blocks” stained black, some “circular”, and a few brown puddles. It looks like oil stains on a otherwise normal sandstone colored patio.

I'm so glad to hear it! You definitely can do it yourself. Just remember that any "mistakes" or imperfections can be worked with and ultimately lend to the final project being beautiful and unique. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hows the acrylic sealer holding up after a year? I'm trying to decide acrylics or epoxy high gloss?.

My stain turned out red like that, how can I get it a darker brown?
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 Год назад
First, soak a spot on the floor with water. That is what it will look like once sealed with acrylic or epoxy. If you feel like it's still too red, you may have to look for a different color stain and apply it over the existing and get it darker/more brown. My floor came out dark brown (original color put down) with redish highlight marbling (second color mahogany you saw me apply here). It all looks red when dry, but color vastly changes when sealed!

I’m going to do a 2 color stain, weathered terracotta and turquoise.. should i do both at the same time, is there one i should do before the other? Want mostly terracotta with a turquoise swirled into it
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 2 года назад
I can only speak to my personal opinion (there are so many variations to doing multi colored acid stain). I would prep the entire area. I would then put down a nice heavy application of terracotta. By the time I finished that application, I would start a timer for 3 hours. Reset your sprayer and equipment (or have a second ready to go with turquoise). Put Turquoise down HEAVY in whatever pattern you see fit. When your timer goes off, begin the neutralization process. The trick to all acid staining - do it like you mean it. Make sure you have plenty of product for all steps. Don't be afraid of any steps, or skimp on any product. No matter how much you plan, the chemical makeup of the concrete itself will have a heavy impact on the end result, so don't sweat how it comes out in the end!

That "funky white stuff" is moisture trapped underneath. If it doesn't resolve on it's own, you can reconstitute the sealer with lacquer thinner. 👍
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 года назад
The first coat is simply thin and not full coverage. Those were just dry spots where the concrete was rougher because mine is rough brush finish. The acrylic was not fully covering yet, and they weren’t cloudy spots. Cloudy white spots can be a thing for trapped moisture, yes. There was no issue here, just a thin layer of acrylic enhancing the imperfect surface. It all blended into a glassy surface by the second coat. It’s stupidly dry here - we have problems, but moisture isn’t one of them! Thanks for checking out the build!

Has anyone tried acid sraining an overlay like Newcrete?
@cherylbglover

Another question. Its high humidity here, would I use a dehumidifier to help dry 100%
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 года назад
You could use fans/dehumidifiers after the whole process to help it dry before sealing, but it's not necessary. Things will dry on their own accord, regardless of humidity. It will probably take a couple full days or more for this to happen in a super humid place.

What was your total cost from start to finish?
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 года назад
Hi Rhonda! Thanks for watching and commenting. This entire project (including all landscaping done around it) totaled about $9,880 from start to finish from my receipts. It seems like a lot; but for frame of reference, paying someone to do the concrete alone for 600 sq. ft. at 12 yards would easily hit $4,000-$7,000. Be sure to check out the rest of the playlist to see what went into this garage!

iNawrocki your floor Oh gosh I wasn’t clear, staining the floor, was was your total cost
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 года назад
@@rhondaperdew3538 I suppose that definitely makes sense, given the actual episode you're commenting on! The Prep is $21.00 and I only used 1 gallon. The stain itself is $45.00 per gallon. I used 2 gallons of Walnut and 2 gallons of Mahogany. The Superseal 2000 is actually the most expensive using 6 gallons at $37.00 per gallon. The grand total for my floor was about $450 for all products, tax, and shipping.

I mopped my acid floor 10 times and the color still comes up
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 3 года назад
You don't want to keep doing that; a good mop to clear the majority of any loose powder and residue, then get it sealed. Any leftover color/colored dust will get sealed in.
