Love it. Looks almost exactly to what we put on our basement floor. Stain is a good option for basements especially if a drain backs up, no carpet to worry about. You do good work Mike.
@Time is Right idk man, I have a kid and I share his sentiment. Me and my wife are currently removing the flooring in our house one section at a time while living in it
Hey Mike. This video really helps me out with the staining of concrete. I always have stayed away from staining. But as my small business grows I want to do more of this. I love this side of decorative side of concrete. You and your guys are great and I learned a lot from this videos. Keep up the good work.
I am going to do this to my cement floors. Never ever did like carpets. Tiles are expensive and slippery when wet.. I just want what is more reasonably cost and more maintenance free. This looks good. Can't wait to do my own floors.
A very organic, natural 'wood' sort of appearance to it ! The mat finish is the best ! You guys should probably be wearing chem-masks though, with the acetone. Those VOCs can hurt you, down the road a piece.
So glad I found your channel, Mike. I've got a big patio job happening in my yard at the moment. I've picked a stain color and realize I know nothing about concrete sealer finishes -- matte, gloss, semi gloss, low sheen, etc. If I don't try to gain a little knowledge myself, I don't know how to answer the question, "what do you want?" This is the scariest part for a customer -- this isn't what we DO, so it's hard to know what it is we want or what the options are.
well hello again from a mainer now living in costa rica - this is the second time i searched youtube for something I was making and the second time i recognized an accent from home - i subscribed after the last video, the minute i heard the voice, i scrolled down and figured it was you - grin - i just had my first go at a polished cement counter top poured in place - (meant a whole lot of steel troweling - every couple of hours -- 12 midnight and i think it is finally good - spray misted it and covered it with plastic for the night - thanks for your videos, and double thanks for speaking a version of "ingles" i recognize - my wife is filipina, our friends and neighbors range from other filipinos, latinos of multiple countries and accents, to germany, france, italy, israel, china, india, and more - sometimes it is easier just to visit in spanish than understand all the variety of english - lol -
Our house flooded and our hardwood floors are ruined, which were refinished less than 2 years ago after a frozen pipe leak. I think this would be a great solution but insurance isn't paying for flood issues so I hope to eventually get all the warped hardwood up and have this done. Great video. Now I know what is involved when we have this done.
I've recently subscribed to this channel and I make it a point to watch as many videos as I can. I've learned so much in a short period of time. Just to see you guys do the project from beginning to end. Man, The questions get answered before I can ask them! Thank You God Bless
@Mike Day Concrete update: We couldn't get a stain for the floors. I live in a small town and had to order it. But we were able to grind back the floor of one room and just sealed it. Your video made the whole process so easy! While I would have loved to stain the floor (I will be staining the second one) the industrial feel of the raw sealed concrete worked surprisingly well! Old stains show and we didn't seal the cracks first and it actually looks pretty good. Now to see how well the sealer lasts hahaha
****Beautiful!!! Love the leather-look... It's very unique and it looks really natural!🎉 I'm doing my outside terracotta and I didn't know how to do the spray pattern... I love this tutorial ... It's a piece of art! 💕🤗🌞
that's beautiful. i want to do this for all my rental properties. you can do the entire conversion to concrete stained floors without bending over at all unlike tile or wood or laminates. you can literally do whole job standing up so easy on body and lasts longer and cheaper better in every category
I WAS ALSO THINKING OF DOING THIS FOR MY RENTAL, BUT WHAT ABOUT IT BEING CHILD FRIENDLY. COULD FALL AND HIT YOUR HEAD PRETTY BAD. ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN TILE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I think It looks great, you do a excellent job explaining in your videos of how to etc. I'd say your channel pretty much covers it all, best concrete learning videos without a doubt.
Looks great Mike! I love the variation in colors. I did not hear your suggestion on alternative cleaning methods. I'm thinking maybe acid washing. My DIY project is to restain my front and rear porches. The previous stain done by the previous owner has faded and worn away. I need to keep the anti-skid texture to prevent slipping on the floor when wet. So i will shy away from sanding/cleaning machine. But explain about the alternative cleaning method before i apply stain. Thanks! Donny
We are going to DIY this for our home, so obviously came to do research. My biggest take away is that I can do this project in socks/slippers 😂❤ But in all seriousness, thanks for a great informational video. Best one I’ve found thus far!
Very nice. Only thing I would have done differently is to cut some more lines to make it look more like large marble/granite plates. Great job always. FYI, I use someone your vids to give my clients ideas. So thanks for the visual selling aides.
I’m in process of dealing with hairline cracks in my basement floor. The home is only 12 years old…and I slightly freaked out about the cracks. It s not structural, just settling. We live in western Massachusetts, and the weather has been “wonky”…with snow one day.. rain, followed by temps approaching 60! And this is January! Anyway, we are considering something similar. That line down the middle ….did you guys put that in? We have no such lines…and our basement is huge. I now think we should have. Regarding this floor, you guys did a beautiful job!
Thanks so much for posting this. I've been wanting to redo the floor in my house for several years; it's covered with wood laminate (pergo) that's been damaged by several floods. By the time I was able to setup a drainage system outside that would prevent that, the damage was done. I had been thinking about putting ceramic tile or stone on the concrete so that it would resemble a stone floor, when I saw a friend's house who did what you demonstrated: Cleaned, stained and sealed his concrete pad. This is exactly what I want for my house and your video showed that it's something I could do, that I don't have to hire someone else to do it for me. I'll definitely check out the Concrete Underground, but this has been a great introduction to staining my slab!
thank you for the video! I am in the process of doing this in a "bar room" in my house and this was a wonderful resource! What kind of sealer did you use? thanks again! (and my apologies if this has been addressed previously)
Turned out Beautiful. I am converting a 20x25 out building on our farm into my new home! It has a great cement floor and this is exactly what I want. What color did you use? And can you put a semi gloss top coat on it to give a little sheen without it becoming super slippery like marble floors?
Looks fantastic! Just the video I was looking for. We just had a paver company come out & lay some stone like pavers down under our pergola that’s flush with our back porch slab. I wanted to stain the concrete of the porch to blend it into the look of the cafe colored pavers.
What diamond pad grit did you use on this job? I would like to keep the tiger striping in on my floor as well. And is that grit strong enough to take off any sealer that was used on the concrete.
We used a 50 grit ceramic pad. It's inbetween a metal and a resin pad. It wouldn't remove sealer. You have to grind off sealer in most cases with a metal diamond cup wheel.
I liked the finished product, but hope there was some blue insulating board underneath for insulation value. The prep work with a 20 inch machine was labor intensive!
Hey Mike, what’s the cost on this job? I’m looking to have it done to my basement. Same look! What should I expect to pay? I have the same square footage of basement also. I live in southeast Wisconsin. Thanks Mike! I watch a lot of your videos and you are very knowledgeable and do excellent work!
I want to do this in a 13x17" room. The room had carpet glue and paint overspray on it. I probably need to hire someone to do the proper prep. Where are you located?
This floor is beautiful! The problem that I’m facing, however, is the house I bought has stained floors already, and they did a terrible job of it. I hate the color, and they put huge grout lines that are difficult to keep clean. Plus, anything that has been dropped on it, chipped it and the chip filled with dirt. So we have our work cut out for us. Do you think the grout lines can be removed? If so, what machine do we use to remove them and is it something we can rent? Another thing is, how do we prevent chipping once our floor has been redone? I really want to get our floors redone but I’ll probably have to do it myself as money is tight.
Will concrete stain last forever unlike paint the will eventually chip or wear off from traffic? I'm looking for a durable low maintenance one and done for my smooth concrete basement floor and my ouside rough concrete front porch.
That looks really good! I actually would love to get a look similar to that in an outside environment. I'm looking to do a patio in the back with those quikrete molds. Is there anything about this process that would be done differently if it were new concrete, but outside instead of inside? Thank you in advance.
My basement is also power trowelled very smooth. Is there a step between the cleaning and putting down the stain that is needed to open the pores of the concrete to accept the stain?
Thanks Mike! Wow. That machine is a beast. They have a 10 inch I can rent at H.D. will take forever on 2000sq ft basement. What grit on that diamond pad? Thanks!!!
