wow...that sky trick with desaturation is just excellent...I've totally run into that problem, and most of the time I just do sky replacement...but this is awesome...especially if the sky already looks decent, and especially if I'm on a time crunch...which is pretty much always lol...Thanks!

I have also used the dropper in the upper left of the color wheel box (just under the "Primaries" title). In a lot of cases, this seems to do a pretty acceptable job of it. I have also done white balance in Fusion.

Thank you Casey, I recently switched from a decade with Premiere and was wondering where they hid the WB eyedropper in Resolve and I never would have guessed it was behind those crosshairs! Don't worry, I'll hit Lift, Gamma, and Gain first MOST of the time, ha! Thanks for the tutorial!

Why not use the "temp" and "tint" controls (just above the wheels) for overall white balance? This should generally have the same effect as white balance controls on the camera. Once you have that dialed in for overall white balance, you can use the wheels to tweak shadows/mids/highlights if needed.
@flipnap2112
@flipnap2112 3 года назад
there are many different ways to achieve results. if he used temp and tint im sure someone would ask "why not just use the balance pickers". there may be a reason for NOT using temp and tint, but I dont know for sure because I use color cards in camera as a frame of reference
@dack42
@dack42 3 года назад
@@flipnap2112 Sure, it definitely works to do it the way he has. However, if the goal is to make the same overall WB change to the entire image (like an in-camera WB control), then the temp/tint controls are much simpler and act like the camera controls. Changing one control affects the entire image, rather than having to eyeball it with 3 separate controls. If you actually want separate control of the different ranges, then it makes sense to use the primary wheels (or other controls).
@flipnap2112
@flipnap2112 3 года назад
@@dack42 tint cannot adjust for indirect color reflections (global illumination for the 3d nerds). WB isn't just a filter you throw onto an image. of course most people wouldn't notice but its technically not the best way for correct white balance

Waqas Qazi did a video on correcting color balance using temp+tint vs lift+gamma+gain vs offset. He suggests using offset first because it adjusts everything (including black/white point) in a linear way. Temp+tint doesn’t affect blackpoint equally to whitepoint. Nor does lift+gamma+gain. Not sure how much it matters in the end tho: Casey still gets good results. Maybe my untrained eyes just can’t tell the difference yet.

Hi Casey. I was hoping you would fix the shot in your thumbnail. My video is similar - orange and underexposed. I was hoping I could follow your example to fix orange-brown but underexposed video - a night shot with yellow LEDs everywhere. All suggestions are welcome.

Nice edit Casey! For better or worse, you need to work in some parallel node action into these vids if you want to keep up with the competition…especially with these types of examples. Rip that adhesive bandage (aka Band-aid) off and crush it. With hope…🤞🏼 Great edit! 🥂

Are you using color management here to convert from log to rec.709? Or the transformation is entirely handled by your one node here? Great tutorial! Never knew about the white and black point pickers on lift and gain dials.

Damn...I hate gear snobs! Why not use the 2nd version as a starting point and teach how to adjust from there with the same basic explanation? Reiterating that it's not a perfect method. Still one of my preferred teachers

Haha love your humor!! Amazing video! Oh and btw, can you please please make a tutorial on how to use the planar tracker to place an object on your face? Like how in WandaVision episode 9, (spoilers) Wanda gets her crown and it stays almost perfectly on her face. I saw the BTS of the scene, and she has 3 tracking markers on her forehead, but it didn't work too well for me. I already have a black screen of the crown btw. I tried using the planar tracker, but I'm sure it can be made much better if you make a tutorial.
@flipnap2112
@flipnap2112 3 года назад
you can use trackers in fusion and its super easy. dont let nodes fool you into being scared. Casey has a TON of beginner tutorials on Fusion. once you see how easy it is to track something in fusion you'll kick yourself for not jumping in earlier. and basic tracking like you mentioned can easily be achieved in the free version of resolve.
@NeevTHM
@NeevTHM 3 года назад
@@flipnap2112 Yeah i know, ive been using resolve for a little while now. I actually was able to do the effect with plaar trackers and trackers, but like i said, it can be much better. and lol im not scared of nodes at all theyre acc quite fun.
@flipnap2112
@flipnap2112 3 года назад
@@NeevTHM oh cool. yeah well tracking can and should be done according to the particular task. people will sometimes put small tracker marks on their faces. Track the dots then paint out the dots to remove them later. tracking usually works with contrast. skin doesnt usually have a lot of contrast, dark or light. another method is to use something like mocha or the (almost released) "lockdown", which will track a fee, make a mesh, then warp the face so it stays completely flat. then when your done with your composite/paint work you just "destabilize it" in other words, make it normal again and you've got a perfect track.
