If you are a car person, at sometime you have experienced the dreaded "STICKY BUTTON" . Porsche, Jaguar, Ferrari... theses are just a few of the cars that we have seen that have had this issue. The buttons and surfaces of your dash become gooey, sticky and gross, and once it starts, its not going away on its own!!!
Your options to correct it range from removing the offending components and sending them off to be reconditioned to replacing your steering wheel, radio etc... Solutions like finger nail polish remover have their own risk.
Well, The Full Octane Garage spent some time and researched the issue and this is the best solution that we have seen so far! (we found it on the Porsche forums)
Note!!!! just like any fix involving solvents and cleaners on your collector car, test a small and discrete area first and work slowly while constantly observing the effect. All car materials can be different and using too much for too long or rubbing too much can still remove markings on those buttons soooo be careful. I had excellent results on my 1 of 45 Jaguar but your car maybe different. There was not an Amazon link for the exact product I used so I used the Best Buy link below. This is the EXACT product that I used, Im sure others are similar but I did not want to put a link out to something that we did not personal try... Its your BABY right?

UPDATE!!!! It’s been almost 2 years since I posted this video… Buttons are still clean and not sticky #winning ! I have had car retailers watch this video and they are now using this technique.

I tried the rubbing alcohol and it did come clean, very easily, however, it feels like there's still a little trace of sticky, that wants to come back. 🤔

I used a soft rag with 70 percent alcohol , and it took all the sticky off on my Range Rover buttons. I was taking car in for service next week , and it would have cost me a high dollar to replace these with new ones ... a great solution !!!! This solved my issue in 10 minutes !!! AWESOME !!!

Fantastic results. Thanks. Takes some time. I wrapped my fingertip with the wet wipe and use my finger tip to scratchlessly scrape away that sticky layer of crud. Totally safe. Wont harm the white silkscreened icons on the buttons and knobs👍

I finally looked this issue up. And found myself looking at my own car’s dash. 😂 You’res is bit fancier. Mine is a 2015 xk convertible. We bought it new. Can’t believe that was the last year. I am definately going to try this super simple solution. Thanks for sharing. ❤

I tried the technique with alcohol and I have the same car . I used alcohol and microfiber and it felt smooth as I let it dry then it got sticky again then I would wipe and then smooth then dry and sticky again. What am I doing wrong ?

I fixed my 2014 XK by rubbing them with hand lotion on a q-tip. Still looks great after 3 years. Alcohol will also remove the white lettering if you are not careful. I know it sounds weird but try the lotion. IT WORKS !

Haha, lotion may have been what made them sticky :)

Hand lotion? Did it remove the surface, the rubber part? Or did it refurbish it, so to speak? That would be great in that case!

Use "Neutrogena Makeup Remover" 25 towelletes you can buy it at any local drug store. It's safe for facial skin, then it should be safe for car interior parts. It works. I tried.

7 months later. How is the fix holding up for you? Have the buttons become sticky again or are they still ok?

Thankyou for the tips. This is a manufacturing issue that Jaguar know about but will not honour. I purchased a 2011 XF premium luxury Jag from new. The buttons started deteriorating in 12 months. Claimed under warranty but Jaguar did not accept it as they believed the issues were caused by oils from my skin. Very annoying given that buttons were deteriorating that I didn't even use. Besides, what do they expect you to do, operate the car with gloves on all the time. Now it is a global issue. Give me hard buttons any day as opposed to this rubbish.

Something spill on the buttons to cause this?
@Fulloctanegarage
@Fulloctanegarage 2 года назад
Nope it is an inherent issue with Porsches, Jags , Ferraris etc… it is a coating from the factory to breaks down into a gooey mess over time. I think it is related to being stored in a hot and humid environment. I had a convertible 996 911 that did the same thing

It’s due to lipids from the human skin. Fat, that is. If it remains in the surface, this will happen. However, we are all covered in lipids and thin layers of fat, so no reason to blame yourself for the handling,.. 👍☺️
@200mphBrian
@200mphBrian 10 месяцев назад
@Justusson no it is not from lipids or even touching because I have it in many areas that you do not touch for example either side of the center popup ac vents or where the door meets the dashboard I'm talking about where you can't see when the door is closed let alone touchj
