Scotty Kilmer. Hello, I love watching your videos a long time ago. You inspired me for cars. Recently, I was concerned about my car start-up. When the ignition is on the position, it'll turn on normal noise at the last second it would like shake or sputter a little, then start and I changed the spark plugs brand new. So I was wondering would it be the ignition coils or the battery? Because sometimes the fan would come up, sound like my car is about to turn off, but it doesn't when im in a stand still or idling, please help or give me some advice. I would really appreciate it
Thanks, Scotty. My dad was a mechanic with your integrity. Many times, during hard financial times, he provided low cost or zero costs to his customers to help them to get to work. In return, many of them provided him with bushels of produce or seafood. That kept our freezer full and fed us. You truly provide a service that many appreciate and it saves them money.
Your dad was indeed a good man. I work on motors, particularly diesel engines. Caterpillar’s Mainly. Sometimes being skilled with your hands doesn’t always mean you need money. I’ve bartered a lot of work out for all sorts of things. Food, yard work, house repairs etc..
Yeah I used to think the same thing until I just saw the tread on his wife's tires. He's obviously not too worried about his wife's safety cuz those tires are well past their due date for replacement
Those tires on your Matrix were nearly to the cord😮 they would not pass the Lincoln penny test no matter how "evenly worn". Might be time for some new ones. The dust covers are probably superfluous unless you plan on a lot of dirt road or desert driving.
Really cheap pads are not ceramic so the wear out faster and get hot quicker. If you get lifetime warranty, you can replace them often (for free). But my suggestion is get OEM equivalent pads. Noise?? Never had noise and I have had a lot of cars with all kinds of pads.
I like advice and words of Wisdom from Scotty Kilmer on cars. And more. If a person in the US with a German last name such as Trumph or Kilmer says something wise on cars, I pay attention. Thank you, Scotty Kilmer, for sharing with us your knowledge of cars from 55 years as a car mechanic. If the brakes squeak when engaged, occasionally, the brake pads and meahanism may still be in perfect shape.
It would be nice if I knew you and lived close to you and was able to ask for for some advice if my car needed any possible repairs so I wouldn’t run into Any problems either on my own or at a Mechanic shop or at a Dealership shop so I could save on the costs for any possible repairs that I might need for my car whatever make and model it is . Thanks Scotty for All the Videos you have put out through the years on RU-vid. There Needs to be More People just Like You in the World 🌎 !!!! God Bless You 🙏
THANK YOU again and again for your HONESTY (so rare these days) and all of those GREAT videos you so KINDLY and Generously put out for us " common DIY-mechanic" with all tricks and tips to save money ... I'm a 67 single woman and bcz of YOU, if not able to do the needed repairs myself 😔 at least get the infos from you, to NOT "so easily get ripped off" by those shops that too often take advantage of us women as they "Assume" we are ignorant and best preys to their "💰💰 🤑" money making AND dishonest practices...PLEASE keep up the good work and know we are blessed to have YOU on our side..TY
If anybody taking a car to the shop doesn't have a go pro in the hood your asking to get ripped off. A couple of stickers saying "Warning : Recoding in progress 24/7" will keep them honest.
Tires are a big one around here. I bought some used tires on FB a while back. A tire shop refused to mount and balance them and went straight into sales mode because"They were too old." The tires had good tread, no weather cracks, and held air fine. They just wanted to sell me a 1000 dollar set of tires. Do your research people! Unfortunately, the days of taking their word for it are over. Unless you find you a good mechanic, treasure that man! TLDR I ended up having them mount and balance them off the car, and I just switched them out myself.. just outside their parking lot.. still fine. And I live next door to them, so I drive by every day. Petty?.. maybe.. satisfying? Yes. 😈
I will NEVER have anyone change my Transmission oil again.. I had a 08 Dodge Caliber with CVT trans not having any issues, was talked into changing the trans oil and apparently they put the wrong fluid in it, it started slipping an making noise... then they said I needed a new Transmission! Cant trust anyone these days!
Remember this you can only report a garage to the Better Business Bureau if that garage is a member of it, not all garages are members nor was it government man dated that they are here in Canada we have customer consumer relations I'm not sure about South of the Border but, their tools up here anyway, that Scotty says use your common sense it'll never let you down
No such device as an "Emergency brake"...USELESS IN AN EMERGENCY... Itz only a PARKING BRAKE!! ...so, car owners can cause damage to their transmissions with all that weight of the car on the internal parking pawl inside shifter selector...and, they can break causing the car to roll downhill!!😮!😮😮😮
The trick with the struts happened to my friends with got told she needed 4 new struts, brakes and loads more she called her husband to check he showed up checked the struts knew it was WD-40 sprayed on got £3000 back from them.
Yeah been told by gm dealer the rad from my 18 tahoe is leaking and needs replaced. Never seen leak in garage couldn't see anything under the hood. And never filled up a single drop of coolant. So yeah we didn't replace the rad.
Most garages are rip off artists. I changed my struts once and a month later they said they were worn already. I videoed it. RU-vid took the video down since they own this chain of repair shops.
Scotty I love you but you're a cheapskate. Jiminy Christmas put some new tires on your wife's car if you care about her safety at all. There's almost no tread left on those tires and you just said you put a plug-in one over 6 years ago. Do you know what happens to a rubber band when you put it into a drawer for 6 years or leave it outside even if it's never been stretched? Rubber deteriorates and the less tread you have on your tires the longer it takes you to stop especially in wet weather. You care about your wife's safety put some tires on her damn car
Years ago when I was a mechanic (went to school for it) at a local place, a customer had a truck towed in, that wouldn't start. Turned out it was just out of gas. The owner of the shop informed the customer that it needed a carb rebuild and tune-up, plug wires, everything. I quit after that and never worked in garage again. There were a few other things that happened that were dishonest practices with customers. I've always been my own mechanic, but now age is catching up and I find myself going to a shop now and then for large labor/specialty jobs. Love Scotty's channel. If I would have worked with a "Scotty" in my day, no doubt I would still be a mechanic today. That garage I mentioned, has since closed down.
Now,I'm too old to do that stuff for the most part and KNOW what they will do to me and I can't stop it and that REALLY pisses me off....In this case, ignorance IS Bliss...If you don't know they sodomized you,it's a lot easier to avoid going back to ***** the bastards...
That's too bad because you likely had a passion for the craft, and a dishonest shop somewhat left a bad taste in your mouth. Mechanics typically don't have a good name. People generally often ask...do you know of a "honest" mechanic? That's definitely not just by random that is typically phrased in that way. Good for you for quitting.
@@arsenelupiniii8040 Yeah I actually do already, I do everything except full engine rebuilds, I leave that to pros because of how precise you have to measure things and such, I mean I probably could do it but I would rather pay for that part and have it done right.
@@95TurboSol Copy that, interference engines can be tricky getting it rolled over on time, before timing chain placement, check and double check. Still cross fingers when first start however. I am tearing down a 1.8 volks cabriolet right now, thing is german AF! I love the challenge however!
Generations of kids who are now adults will never grow up around men like this. People wonder why the world is the way it is…..Scotty is the man that whole generations of kids never had.
A gen x was sitting on the car keys but she was on her phone and while the rest of us looked for the key’s finally I turned off the connection and she could brake away from the phone seconds later she realized she was sitting on the keys . This problem is from the CIA and ultimately Satan. If all of us stand up against this we might recover maybe.
I had a guy who treated me like a son when I was growing up and into my 30's. His name was H. C. Hinesley (aka Red) and he owned a Chevron Service Station. He taught me all about the cars of the day (60's, 70's, and 80's) He retired in 1982 and lived until 2001. I hope to see him again in the next life.
Scotty, I think this is your best video yet. As a single woman without this kind of help in my life, this kind of info is priceless. I cringe anytime I have to speak to a mechanic because I know so many are despicably dishonest and I have been a victim of it at least 2x (that I know of). Thank you from the bottom of my
Mechanically speaking, if a repair facility doesn't report and is unwilling to show you tangible cause (ie; worn out, leaking, torn/cracked, bent, broken or collaterallly damaged components) then they don't have a case and you should decline their suggested correction till they do or get a second opinion elsewhere.
When my wife and I were dating she drove to Fl to work at Disney for a semester. Before she left, I changed the oil and brakes/rotors on her Honda Civic. While she was down there she had taken it into a shop for something else and they guys said she also needed new brakes/rotors/calipers and wanted to charge her 3,000 dollars for it all. I'm still mad about it 15 years later!
Scotty reminds me so much of my grandfather.. Its pretty rare to see a genuine honest mechanic these days they seriously just rip people off and some don't even know what they are doing .
I’m probably one off the few people on the planet who has an honest mechanic. He’ll actually tell me when I don’t t need to do something or talk me out of something unnecessary that I’m worrying about thinking I need to do.
Yeah I have one of those too. Guy named John, old school mechanic been going for 40 plus years. Way past retirement but carries on as he loves tinkering with cars. Has a business partner Paul, great guy too, who's in his mid thirties and deals with all the engine computer management stuff. Garage has a couple weeks waiting list, unless it's something really urgent, as they're always busy. Like yourself I feel kinda blessed to have them. Worth their weight in Platinum.
I knew a guy like that too...A virtual Unicorn....Personally I can say I NEVER sold anyone ANYTHING that they did'nt need. Over 50 years...EVER !!!!!!! of course I turned away THOUSANDS of jobs because I would not cheat people.....
Scotty. Your best informative video yet. I explain this stuff everyday to my customers. What hurts is those poor people coming with estimates, or worse, actual work done from franchises or dealerships. I can give a 100 stories, the worst was a 2001 VW Golf 1.8T that went to a local franchise few years ago. Mileage was 160k km. They sold them $3500 work for all new struts, new brakes (which even if calipers were changed they were rebuilt), 4 way sway links, and thats it. All cheapest aftermarket parts. The most important they should have mentioned its an aged 1.8T and you need a timimg belt. Guess how I met them. Belt broke. Now I suspect all the other work besides maybe pads and possibly rotors was not needed. Luckily had a link back then and got a healthy low km engine for $600. Would've fixed the valves on the damaged motor but labor would be more. (Still less than 3500! because its a silly fwd 4 banger) All in all total job with new powersteering pressure line was $1600. And somehow the franchise got 3500 for work that can be done in a few hours, that probably wasnt even necessey, and didnt even warn the customer of what was really important. Worse is they charge list price for 3rd line parts (that means if say a drive axle is 800 at the dealer, and the aftermarket is 180, they will charge you 800, this is what paying LIST means). I agree with any retail to make a percentage on your parts, but how do you justify 180 to 800 and its not even top quality? So you're lucky if the rotors or sway links last a year or two. Many great 1st line aftermarket products available for better than dealer prices and most last longer. Say you buy an original Honda balljoint from Honda. It is not the same quality or even manufacturer of the one that was installed when vehicle was new. Dealerships also use a lot of aftermarket from local suppliers.for work while charging your full List Price for OEM. In the end its the only reason people ditch used cars for new because stealerships and francheesey locations rip people off. I will never understand why people trust the dealership representing the brand you bought to be the best at repairing it. They are parts exchangers where 70% of.the workforce is dumb kids. They will do peel outs with your car when you're hoping for simple oil change. A shop that actually shows you your car and the problems makes sense. A shop that won't let you into.the work area because of insurance issues is bull because any shop can get liability insurance for their customers, and if they sell you that story, they are hiding things. Get smart people and find independent shops. They're everywhere and even if they're shifty, STILL cheaper than the rest.
35yrs as a mechanic and I can say we are not all Like this. Guys like that give us honest mechanics a bad name. We are just making a honest living like everyone else. I used to give stuff away sometimes, when I owned my shop. Maybe that's why I failed.
100% honesty is different than 99%. Rethink about yourself and most of all, be honest to yourself first. Even you gave stuff away, think about when you were not 100% honest just because of comfort or whatever. I trully doubt your words. Never met a honest person complaining about the honesty of the others. Everything you said just suggests you're putting yourself in the bucket of the less dirty ones, still you were dirty at some degree. I don't know about your life, I'm just assuming, so don't get offended, I'm just a stranger on the webs.
also, if u get alignment. make sure that its correctly done. everytime i get one done, its NVR right. after the 3rd try, they told me my links are no good. 900 to fix. im like eah tire has one, they cost about 15-25 a piece. thats 100 or less, but then 800 for labor? all u need is a socket set and sometime. rip off.
My son knew nothing about cars, took his car in for a brake job three times in one year, when I found out, I told him to stop going to that shop, not surprisingly, that shop went out of business a year or so later
Thank you Scotty, I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching all your videos. You really opened my eyes to how I was being taken to the cleaners by mechanics (specifically Firestone). Knowledge is power, so thank you for empowering the common man
Definitely Firestone is trash as a company. Sears too when they were still around. They wouldn't pass my inspection unless I replaced my wipers at their shop (something I could do myself). Well those practices helped push them downhill.
@@williamlgolub Not knocking upcoming mechanics, but thats probably who these place hire. New tech school grads Salaries are low, So, basically these new guys learn on customers cars, and move on to better pay when they have some "experience" under their belts
Scotty, thanks for the tips. Yes sir, dealers love to try to sell you brakes. Once upon a time I was foolish enough to own a few BMW's , never again. Those creeps tried to sell us air filters, in cabin and engine with every oil change. Not to mention thing constantly break in them German tanks. Starters, batteries, fuses, electrical issues, oil burning rings, it never ends. BMW is the worst.
As a rule of thumb, if they tell you something expensive needs to be done during a regular maintenance visit, tell them to show it to you. Then tell them you're going to drive it awhile, and research the issue before you make your decision. There are shops that will purposely break parts of your vehicle, and them tell you it needs to be fixed, which of course it does. Use common sense though. If something breaks long begore it should, invesigate the situation.
SCOTTY. That tire is WORN! COME ON! As for the brakes, it's a good idea to measure the thickness of the rotors when it's time to change the pads. If too thin, replace them. I did a total fluid flush in my Nissan at 60K. Changed the filter. Cleaned the pan. 90K now. Still going. Good vid. Thanks.😁
"As for the brakes, it's a good idea to measure the thickness of the rotors when it's time to change the pads. If too thin, replace them." Correct. This is what my mechanic recommended. I did this and when his head mechanic did a test drive they found a lot of 'give' in the right hand steering before the wheel turned and engaged. So they replaced a part and didn't charge me labour for it just the part. Now the car is steering great, the brakes are fantastic and I'm happy.
BTW my mechanic is a racing driver and loves cars especially high performance vintage cars. He runs his whole shop extremely efficiently and I found him by googling Honest mechanic and then my city, and got a chat room and found him. He knows I do my own servicing and respects that. He never tries to upsell me.
@@theperson3693 Wrong. If they're like bologna skin the can't shed water and subject to hydroplaning on the road. Loss of contact with the road in water is like driving on ice, and that's frickin' dangerous! Scotty's tire was worn enough to change. I'm a mechanic too and I would not drive on tires like that.
@@TheUnknownHarbingers He might be confusing inspecting them, at that low milage, for replacing them. There's no way that a Japanese vehicle would automatically need new struts at only 35.000 miles. However, winter driving on salty roads will threaten the shafts, pitting them to the point where they can no longer seal
I wish Scotty could open up a chain of car mechanic shops where they were held to "Scotty's Standards". I would Def go to ANY SHOP that SCOTTY endorses. Or even a website we could check to find mechanic shops that Scotty trusts & recommends. Man, I miss the generation of REAL MEN like Scotty who are honest & have real integrity. Thank you Sir for being a true gentleman.
That would be fantastic. They'd make money too, especially with some advertisement. I guess it's just too much trouble to set it all up especially since he's retired age.
Hi Scotty, As always... great video. However, at four minutes in, for clarity, you probably should have shown that the wheel was off the ground. Since the wheel wasn't rotated, it was hard to tell at first. Not all are mechanically incline. Just my 2¢
Scotty, how about this one ... took to a Dealership, power steering fluid was low, tech said maybe you need a new RACK! Added my own fluid, never a problem since .. never going to that place agian ..
Now I love Scotty, however reading some of these comments there are a lot of honest mechanics out there. The problem that I find is that half of my customers expect me repair their car for free. Would you go to your job work hard all day, save someone a bundle of money and then be called a rip off artist ? So unfair ! And unjust !
Scotty, Long gone the days of watching mechanics work on your beloved vehicle. Been subscribed to your channel for quite a few years now. Thank you for educating us.
Just like one place I worked at trying to tell me the EL Falcon had a "sealed" transmission. They were wrong. I soon found the level check & fill plug.
Soon all these purposely over complexed ICE vehicles will be off the road and entirely replaced with EVs. A much inherently simpler design. Ideally Teslas, being they are the most reliable, safest, best cars in the world. Getting greener, safer, simpler to repair every version. Soon garages will mostly become extinct and mechanics will fix most repairs in your driveway. Fixing cars will be much simpler and less of an opportunity for crooks to rip off the innocent.
I think the concept of "lifetime fluids" came about when organizations like Consumer Reports and JD Power made "cost of ownership" a big metric in their ratings. Manufacturers responded by extending maintenance intervals and shortening warranties.
No joke! If it flows, it needs to be changed, it’s just common sense. And notice that many manufacturers have eliminated the drain on transmissions? Why have a drain if it’s lifetime, right?
Scotty I appreciate your videos and advice, but your camera work on this video is so shaky, it's difficult to understand what you're referring to or describing. Production quality is slipping.
You missed one more thing they do, They "test" your battery and say it has a bad cell and needs to be replaced. Had the front tires replaced and they said my battery was going bad. Asked if it had issues starting. Had no issues with it starting so I declined. That was over a year ago, still fires right up.
I was told my car can't be aligned because the struts and drive shaft have to be replaced. But the shocks actually feel fine. So I'm glad you told me this.
Yeah, I would get a second opinion. I just went through something like that, I was told my car can’t be aligned because I needed all my ball joints replaced. I took it somewhere else. It was just one upper ball joint on the front. That’s a difference between paying $300 and $1200.
@@xFactoryUSA I had it done, the first mechanic said all of them I know what happens when a ball joint goes. I take it to the second mechanic, he brings me around when it’s still on the lift. He shows me, which one needs to be replaced and shows me the others are good. I’m trusting the mechanic, that takes the time to physically show me.
@@Ninnjette- oh that’s not bad then, you know, in the future there won’t me gas engines, but there will be suspension components. It’s good to not be scammed, pass the knowledge along! Always have them show you in person
I'm a dude with an 06 elantra. Bought it for $1925.00 back in 2018. The garage told me my struts were leaking. Though they usually expect me to do my own work anyway. So I don't think it was a scam. My car bounces and sinks and bottoms out too much 😅
