this is only good if you are troubleshooting a gmail account - what about a regular business email account that you might get from godaddy?

Those fckers at Gmail no longer give the option of switching this setting to On. It seems, since May 30th 2022, it's *permanently* set Off. Would be delighted if you could provide another fix, friend?

I just spent the last 2 hours trying to figure this out on my own (I was copying the settings I'd already entered for a different gmail account, so I KNEW it was right) but had NO IDEA about that little toggle in the Google account settings. I tried it and even read all the comments to see if it would help--nope; still getting those pop up messages.

I got a 'similar' issue with outlook, not at setup time, but randomly after having been working just fine for a couple months. Out of nowhere outlook started requesting the password in a cyclical way. The same solution worked just fine. By the way, after it synchronized correctly once, I came back to my google settings and turn this off, and outlook seems to be working fine. We will see how long that lasts. Hopefully it does, as I prefer to have this setting off. Thank you!!

This option apparently was removed May 2022.

Google has changed the path to get to the setting that needs changed, but because you gave me enough info I was able to find it and change it back. Now I can access gmail via Outlook again. Thanks!

As of December 2020, this is no longer useful.

Your gmail account screen is different than mine....do not see anywhere/anything about connected apps

Google actually sent me an email to help me secure my account. When I followed the instructions, it made the change you described, but did not indicate which apps. The email on my phone kept working, but not on my PC with the Outlook client. Thanks for the resolution. Great instructions!
