Not intended for the general public, this video is for those special viewers and friends who wanted an update on my current challenges. I only speak seven words, the images themselves tell the story. All video and sound shot on same New Brunswick location.
Rest assured, no viewers' donations were invested in this property. It's a side project for times I cannot travel. I will be on the road soon! SP

Your red cabin is laid out identically to my grandmother's lake cabin in the Southeastern United States! It is the first time I've ever seen another cabin in the exact layout. She had a well and pump, but only ice cold water. We heated water for our baths over the stove. All my best childhood memories took place there. It was so much fun. I learned to fish there; my grandmother qiuetly, patiently taught me. I love to fish to this very day. Taught me about the seasons and animals and organic gardening through composting, which she just called "gardening!"Thank you Grandmother! Thanks Slim!

Slim, you have created a masterpiece of dramatic tension. We can't wait to see what happens next. Do you have a viable plan to renovate this shack, or are you totally clueless? Can the roof be replaced without repairing the foundation first? Can you make repairs without hiring professionals? What will the country require in the way of permits and inspections? I'm hooked. Whether you dazzle us with your ingenuity or fail ignominiously, I know you videos will be a work of art.

My heart was in my mouth as I watched you back up that you not hit a tree with your adorable little trailer! It looks like the roof is growing hair:) Yes, I too, with my ex, bought such a place over 51 years ago. Another place where if you stomped on a step it fell through. It was just over 400 square feet! We lived in it with no water except what we brought in jugs, or was from a rain water cistern almost dry, no phone, an outhouse, a kitchen with a sink on 2x4's with a hose for the drain through the wall to the ground outside. It had a pot bellied stove for heat. Made many a cup of tea on it while huddled around trying to keep warm that first winter. We had some good times there, worked ourselves silly. Our first son was an infant when we bought it from a classified ad on Easter morning after tromping through the snowy woods to find it. Our second son was born two years later after we put on a ten foot addition which was still unfinished, making it just over 600 square feet:) You are bringing back these wonderful memories for me!

Mold can kill a person. Definitely moldy in there. Most folks are just being realistic.
@Smurphenstein
@Smurphenstein 3 года назад
Not much of the mold is enclosed though and is on bits that are easy to remove and replace. A good mask and coveralls along with a lot of sprayed bleach would see it off. The main structure is fine, it's the add on that needs work. Labour is free if you do it yourself and a few sticks of timber, some roofing and cladding are cheaper than replacing the whole place. I've been designing, estimating and building for thirty years now and once you take labour out of the equation, it removes a lot of the cost. Take out demolition, perhaps even new permits and dumping costs and this building would be a lot cheaper to repair than replace.

A bit of timber, some cladding and a bit of paint. That's a great cabin, the extension isn't the best but the original bit looks solid. I would patch it up and live in it for a while. Definitely salvageable. I would leave it in the style it's in, add some improvements and some repair. It's not a huge or overly difficult job for someone who knows what they are doing.

They got lazy, if they'd kept the evergreens above it trimmed back, you never get the pine needle load which turns into loam, and starts eating up the roof. Growing up in the PNW, you saw it a lot on older homes.
@theramblingeorgian1774
@theramblingeorgian1774 3 года назад
Can't always justify things that are dilapidated by saying it's laziness of people, yes it is unfortunate. But your body reaches a point when maybe you can't do things you did before. Old age, finances, inability to travel to a weekend cabin prevails. Yes, I'm an old fart speaking from experience. It's good just to be surviving. Unfortunately time has also taken its toll on this little retreat hideaway. Slim has got time and age on his side to give it a rebirth. He maybe be saying "what did I just do", but he will prevail. Natures paradise. Wonderful spot he's chosen. A thousand ways this is a win, win for Slim. Always demo and start over.

If you have the MEANS to take care of the roof. I needed to replace the roof on an outbuilding on my property, but just didn't have the money and did the best I could to do makeshift repairs until I could afford it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to secure the funds until after a winter finally took it's toll, damaging the roof. Then it required half the roof to be completely stripped to the rafters, some rafters replaced and everything rebuilt. It was truly a case of "a stitch in time" that could have saved nine. Or five, anyway, as it cost me five times the original quote to repair it by the time I could secure the funds to repair it. You can't judge people based on their resources. The world isn't a fair enough place, often rewarding the laziest and crooked among us and punishing the most earnest, hard-working folk.

My mind's eye sees what it could be, but my gut says call in an air strike, then start over. What ever you choose to do, I'm sure it'll be a masterpiece in the end. Good luck.

Now that there is what we call a BBQ. We invite friends and Family to a BBQ, then hand them tools when they show up. The BBQ comes after...works well...Great location, Slim, I do see potential. Luck to you my friend.

I think that all the people who watch this and are close enough to this house should all pitch in and help him. I’m too far away, thankfully!!! Start with the roof!!

At first, I thought you were calling it a BBQ as in suggesting he burn it down and rebuild lol

What an awesome spot! I have done some renovation in the past. If it was me I would demolish it and start over. It’s easier to build new than to try and renovate. There is nothing there worth saving. Best of luck whatever you decide.

The wood from this would make a nice shed. Property looks very nice. Good luck, my friend. Take care and stay safe.

OMG, Spiritual Bones. A wooden tent, with an impressive stove, an already green roof, a drill press? LAND, a tidal lake? plus enough firewood for winter. GO FOR IT!

As I was watching, I kept thinking: it's a giant Aliner, ready for a lot of Slim Potatohead clever fixes and hacks. Toward the end, I started thinking that the value is in the property and the stack of firewood. I will definitely be watching to see what you do, and cheering you on all the way, whatever your solution is.

Once upon a time, someone had hopes for this little red cabin. Slim, you have the vision and skills to ‘fixer up’ if you want to. And I’ll be watching, no matter what you choose to do.

Hi Slim!! Oh how I love your new lot!! Tear it down,c salvage what you can, and build something Magical as only YOU CAN!!! Having lived in Down East Maine, I can relate to the beauty you have been blessed with to acquire!! I'm looking very much forward to how you manage! Should be Epic for your viewers and myself!! So much different than Alberta terrain for sure!!! Probably warmer in the Winter as well, being on the coast. Just keep an eye on those Nor' Eastahs! Lol! Glad you have your cute little home on wheels to live in while you contemplate and design your new digs! Wish I had a spot like that to call my own... Did hear some noise though..hopefully it doesn't detract from the ambience of your seaside domus!! 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍺CHEERS DEAR AND DEERS! Couldn't believe all the variety of fauna in one little spot!! Much Success To You Slim!! 💚💖🌌🌅🏕🦃🐦🐿👍👷😃🙋- Mindi

Lovely spot! The fixer upper seems to have "good bones", if the footings are okay...rip out all the particle board, level er up, slap a roof on, and go from there. My family is currently renovating a Maine lake cabin that started in similar shape....the demo party was a summer highlight!
