Got to say, I really enjoy the longer series of videos on projects. I really used to enjoy the time and detail you put into your projects, and this feels a bit more like that. Bring back the 30 part series!!! The power hammer looks awesome, keep going!

Screws And Tools, a restoration channel out of Georgia (the ex-SSR, not the US state) has been saving the rust from his projects in hopes of using it in a future forging project (a skill he has yet to acquire- got to admire the ambition if nothing else). That’s what I immediately thought of. In both cases the iron will need purifying before it can be used and that’s going to be fun and educational in and of itself.

From what i have heard and worked with, cooling with water/oil on cast iron depends more on the tool you use, we had ceramic plates on of our tool, and it did not want any cooling other than just being bigger.
@JCisHere778
@JCisHere778 9 дней назад
The high carbon content in cast iron is lubrication enough, so coolant does mostly that. It cools the tool. However both carbide and ceramic tooling work very well at high temperatures. However, thermal shock can chip them. Also the slurry from the dust and coolant can clog up tools/ is abrasive. So either flood cooling or no cooling

Drilling cast iron by hand as opposed to a drill press or mill that provides constant pressure is to work harden the cast at the drill point. And the problem caused by using a fluid to aid cutting is that the iron powder is held to the cutting edge by the fluid and dulling the cutter.

I think you could use a boring head with a toolholder for a round button tool to get more reach under that overhang. However, it will mean feeding much slower, since it's only one cutting edge per revolution. On the plus side, you could grind a high speed steel tool for the exact round profile you want to achieve. Or you could find someone with a shaper you can borrow for a few hours

Depends on the Casting. Usually cast Iron with a lot of graphite in it, is better to maschine dry (with carbide) because grapite is a lubricant. High-Speed-Steel on the other hand lasts longer with a litte coolant (drilling)

At 14:30 the top portion wasn’t quite sitting properly on the lower section but I’d be willing to bet that if you had used a reasonably sized deadblow hammer it would have dropped into place easily. It looks similar to the way main bearing caps in an engine have to be tapped into their registers before they’re tightened down. Engines used to be made of cast iron as well and that tight machine fit helps keep the crankshaft from rattling around loosely.

I really love the degree of machinist leeching into Alec, all that precision when really for a job like this I don't think you even need to be woodworker accurate. Looks really nice for now though. Also really fun to see all the weird ideas he has had to come up with to work on something this big with his 'little' machines - something most hobby machinist know only too well, often because they have much much smaller machines...

If you can work out the carbon content of the cast iron you can probably work with it. Use some mild steel wire and powder, and mix it all up for an overall 1% carbon content and give it some time for the carbon to diffuse during forging. You may not get much contrast though, maybe mix some nickle into the powder part?
