I do love that soft arc sound of a stick welder. Migs buzz sharply and tips almost squeal.

Nice fix. It is surprising how simple the inside of a tombstone is..half empty space and a fan. Now you have an excellent welder that will probably never die.

Hey, you forgot to put the grommet back in for the power cord!

Arcing of contacts and wiper is prevented by turning off welder before switching amps.

Roger, even when the power is on I didn't think current would be running through the contacts to arc over as you mention until the stinger actually contacted something to complete the circuit. I can understand that you wouldn't want to change amp settings while actively welding though. Anyone else supply an update? Thanks...

@@rogermathura I did sweetie, which is why I am asking. "Mine says "When WELDING" which is a little ambiguous. It also says DON'T turn the freaking thing off when you reach the duty cycle for a particular amp rating so that the fan will continue to run to cool the unit down. This was an honest question. I guess that I asked the wrong moron. Perhaps you need to go back and RTFM yourself.
@spudth
@spudth Год назад
Sometimes things are so simple. Really, you just need not be welding to avoid arcing.
@seanseoltoir
@seanseoltoir Год назад
The grommet for the 220V power cord "disappeared" during the reassembly... You might want to "find" it so that you don't eventually find out what sort of sparks 220VAC makes when a metal chassis edge wears through the power cord...

@agentcovert
@agentcovert 2 года назад
Well it's probably something small..I'd start with the plug and cord, then test the on/off switch and then the amp selector..probably going to be cord or plug related if the fan doesn't come on as they still work without the fan..the fans tend to die 1st so its worth testing.. also not sure if you seen the videos on converting them to DC with a simple full bridge rectifier , heatsink and if you want to get fancy a selector switch if not have the terminals sticking out the front via den connectors..so you have DC+,DC-,and AC which allows you to burn different types of rods for different metals like Alum, SS etc as is AC can only weld on steel..I'm sure you will get it working again as they are really indestructible..mine is probably 50yrs old and burns rods all day..

The nylon gear is still available from Lincoln. Running the Roll pin directly against the metal detentes will cause premature wear and the switch will not hold its setting.
@diegozarate7664
@diegozarate7664 Год назад
Could you share the part number of that gear or how to look for it? I've been looking for a good while and have yet to find it. I can only find the shaft (which i do need) and the entire switch assembly replacement.

Knowing virtually nothing about circuitry myself, I wanted a welder that is easy to maintain, or better yet (almost) never have to maintain because it is such a simple powerhouse. Learned these buzzboxes existed a month ago, and can't wait to get/fix one up now!

@cobbleup
@cobbleup 2 года назад
Great job ! I love beating the system like that. That little plastic detent part was specifically designed to fail and that welder was supposed to go to the dump and be replaced by a brand new one…and the new one would have another “weak link” so it would be sure to fail I a given period of time , and probably a much shorter period of time than the old one.
@skepticalobserver7484

That’s just not true. That welder is 40+ years old and there are TONS of them still in operation. Planned obsolescence is a thing, but not with that machine.

If your center shaft has grooves in it from trying to force the selector without pulling out you can reorder it for about 4 bucks at airgas. Lincoln P/N: 9SS13206 I just had to replace mine on an old 1970s welder. Still works!
@petersack5074
@petersack5074 Год назад
4:35 I had to do a very similar thing, on an old tombstone, as well. As far as 'plastic' goes : MAKE ONE FROM REAL METAL/steel. Wouldn't be hard, use a piece of pipe, the same OD as this needs. File/grind the sawteeth, and your basically done. NEVER to fix the 'detents' for each range again. Near the end of video: use a scavenged booster cable, larger size 00 and add it to the ground cable = super long, like 25 feet or so. Mine goes anywhere in the garage....(oldshopguy)
@briholt100
@briholt100 Год назад
I was thinking that too, but maybe use a soft metal like brass so that between the 2, the detent fails and not aparatus
@watcherwatchmen7785

Problem is metal conducts electricity. Can't get shocked every time you grab the switch to change amperage.

Bought mine a couple days ago to learn. Replaced the fan and put on a longer and thicker power cord. Other guys at the shop still think it is running cold and needs to be set to way higher amps than it is supposed to. Anyone else have an issue of these things not making as much power as they are supposed to?

My first guess would be you are a long ways from the main breaker or were power drop is. 2nd guess is what if transformer core was overheated maybe needs relaminated, 3rd heard on internet Some houses with 100amp service were outfited with 60amp meters if they corrode you get even less.

Watch your duty cycle. As you noticed a melting terminal. Building a trailer for a friend I melted a portion of the selector. He was in a hurry and didn't want to let the unit have cool down breaks.

I gotta say this and I'm sure 50 others have before. It's an AC welder. While one lead may come as "ground" it doesn't matter. It only matters on AC/DC where it also has a polarity switch. Nice video though!
