One of our friends was having trouble starting the DLE 35 on his Hangar 9 Valiant 30cc, so Tom had to do some diagnostics. Turned out to be a quick and easy fix.

Some DLE carbs have difficulty pulling fuel even with the choke fully closed, one of the the biggest reasons is the hole on the choke plate, most of these carbs started out as chainsaw carbs when they were designed, in a chainsaw with pullstart, rotation is fast and this hole was made to prevent excess fuel being drawn in and flooding the engine, in RC planes however with handstarts this hole can sometimes can reduce the choke plates ability to properly choke the carb, if your planning on always hand starting then blocking off that hole will make a difference.

So after a year of frustrations with my DLE 35 not starting well (I don't fly that often) I youtubed hard starting DLE 35 and boom here I am! It was a choke issue. Different than this exact scenario but it wasn't fully choking when I thought it was. Thanks for the video!

Very interesting. So the issue was NOT the engine at all but the setup in the airplane. A good reason why the setup should be checked and tested. BTW, the motion of flipping the prop is one of the contributing reasons to my current back issue. Many years and thousands of engine starts by hand...

Did you pull the plane back away from the restraint for a reason? I usually run it up with the horizontal stab against the restraint.

It's personal preference. Holding it away from the restraint when you run it up is easier on the stab.

@@RCPlaneLab But pulling on the fin is better as well as using two feet to hold the stab? Who is this guy?

Who uses Z bends? Threaded rod and ball link, unless you like a vibrating rod hogging out the choke arm hole.

Let me tell you, if this guy built that plane and couldn't figure out the z bend was hitting the fire wall tell him to get a different hobby.

Good catch. It's definitely not the 35. I was going off what the owner said it was and I didn't give it a second thought.
