great quick fix...thought mine had shorted out....took a minute to get the ends off..but carpet fibers were circled up in there...works like a charm now

Thanks for this. I was apprehensive about pulling the end off as shown, but it is exactly what I needed to do. It is a little blurry in the video, but the end of the shaft is splined. So pull it straight off, no twisting. For me, the end was seat pretty well, so definitely needed vise grips and strong pull. It came off, and after cleaning out the hair and gunk, it works great now. Thanks again.

Omgosh, thank you, thank you, thank you! I had to buy a vice grip (and "RU-vid" how to use it) but cheaper than buying a new Powermate Jr attachment. I've already had to do this twice but each time the attachment has worked great.

Great to watch this before opening up the powermate myself .. found some string wrapped around the end of the brush abd on the brush basically keeping it from spinning .. removed all the smutz and its working great!

Your tip did the trick to get my brushes turning again. One thing I would add - I found after taking the end off, I could pull the metal rod out of the middle of the bar and lubricate it a bit. Thanks.

Worked great! I am not super mechanical but was able to fix the power-mate in about 15 minutes following these easy to understand instructions. The most difficult part was getting the end off the brush. Once I got it loosened I was able to insert a very thin screwdriver tip around the edge and very very gently pried it off the rest of the way. Thanks! Very instructive video. .

Thanks for the video. your method seems to work for everyone else. I tried it too even though my brush was spinning fine, but unfortunately did not work for me. I suppose that my belt is worn, because the motor is turning and the brush spins well but the brush still stalls out when we try to use it. Still want to thank you for the video...go youtube!

this worked but if you're like me and was vacuuming for a while before noticing the brush wasn't rotating, be careful not to touch the motor after disassembly. It's HOT! thanks for this helpful video and making me feel less worthless, hahaha

Thanks for posting this video. I thought it was the belt and would have never thought the roller ends would be the issue. Pulled the ends out to find onside had a hair washer. Put the ends back on but they were not parallel so had to pull them off and fix it. Works great now.

Amazing. This is our 2nd one. Replaced the first one because we had just assumed it had died. This time I decided to open it up and see if I could fix it. Well, that was easy! This all started out of nowhere, so I decided to replace the belt. Didn't make any difference. Found your video and wa-la... The PetMate is alive again. Workes so well I did the carpet roller too and it was just as disgusting. My 16-year-old Kenmore Progressive is like new. Much thanks!!

I was ready to replace mine and although I did struggle with getting one of the screws out (and at one point the unit was in the trash!), I went back to it and finally got it out. Taking those ends off is hard -- ugh! But I found the culprit -- a nice neatly-wound circle of hair! Thanks for saving me money!

Thanks! I know I tried this once before but I couldn't get the end off. Something in your video must have turned a switch in my head, because it worked! I used some special pliers to hold one end, I think maybe they are vise? or lock? anyhow, they are adjustable and sort of lock themselves on, it made it much easier for me to pull the other end. Anyway I took out a nice little washer of hair (my long hair!) and success because it now spins. Of course I did this after I vacuumed the whole stairs with just he upholstery brush because I thought jr. was dead!!

Thank you sooo much!! I ended up having to take both ends out as there was pet hair wound tightly under both caps. Some of the hair was fused together that I took it apart thinking it was a washer. Nope, just more pet hair. Now with a new belt and a fur free roller bar, it works great!!

Done...and done. Vacuumed the cat's perch and the carpeted basement stairs: kneel before your God. Where's my medal? My PetMate's rollers would stop at the hint of resistance from upholstery or carpet. Brand new PetMate is $85.000. Followed the video, removed the "hair nest" on either side of rollers and viola! Thank you! Wife now speaking with me again.

Thank you sooooo much - I had taken it apart several times but still couldn't get it to work. This did the trick - amazing.

Also if this doesn't fix it and it seems like the motor is burnt out it probably actually isn't. You'll have to take a look at the field windings to see but 99% of the time I've found that the motor will pull 13 plus amps for a very short time when string etc gets wound in the roller. There's a 10 amp 250v inline fuse on the negative lead on the motor. You have to clip a zip tie and remove some kapton tape around the wire and the field windings. Then there's a fire resistant white sleeve you have to remove. Here you'll find the fuse that's soldered in. A simple continuity test will confirm or deny it being blown. Everyone of these I've fixed I've replaced with a cheap inline fuse holder for 5mm x 20mm glass tube fuses. Kenmore should have done this to begin with but you know being cheap and planned obsolescence wouldn't allow this. People literally will throw this accessory away and buy another $40-$50 one when the fix is under a couple bucks.

It worked for me! I think a new Powermate is something like $150.00. I never thought I could watch a youtube on it and have it fixed in 12 minutes.

Tips for getting the white plastic ends off the roller?

My brush dowel is not symmetrical. It only worked when I put the side with the bristles closer to the edge under the belt. The belt slid out of place when I initially reversed it. Lining up the plastic brush supports is easier by lining them with the seam on the plastic brush dowel.

I was able to remove a huge hairball and put it back together fine! It ran great for a moment and then started making a terrible screeching noise while spinning. Think it just needs lubricant?
