Fixing a Lathe Cross Slide Screw Support

In this video I show how I redesigned and machined the cross slide feed screw support by adding a deep groove ball bearing and thrust bearing. This design is a bit of a compromise. Angular contact bearings would be the best solution, but I didn't want to have to lengthen the screw. Utilizing a preloaded deep groove ball bearing and a needle style thrust washer allows for a small package with minimal modification required to the existing screw. In the end it turned out well and the screw is much smoother with no play (sorry for the pun).

Very good solution I think! Your videography is realy getting very, very good. I feel like a slacker :D

I think it is okay. Angular contacts are the way to go - if I wasn't so lazy I would have done it your way. Still working on videography stuff - but it is a question do you want to machine stuff or sit in front of a computer editing. I'd rather be machining but I'm hoping I can get quicker with more practice.

Nice repair (if that is what you call it) I liked the format for the video too. It seems to suit what you did here. Makes things nice & tidy.

Came here from the interview with Robin Renzetti on the Home Shop Machinists Podcast, I have a medium sized benchtop Logan lathe, and have been noticing the cross slide is pretty sticky, I might just get up the gumption to try some things out. thanks for the inspiration.

Great video! I tried to do something like this with my old lathe, but gave up before I even started... nice job

Given that the bulk of the radial [edited oops] load comes from hand winding at the outer end, I'm surprised that you didn't fit the deep groove at the outer side and the thrust bearing on the inner. Is there a counter intuitive reason for doing it that way that I'm missing? Beautiful job but I have an ML2 (!!) and the problem there is even worse as the "nut" on both top slide and cross slide is an integral thread in the base casting for each. The current amount of "slop" is dire ... not just backlash but side to side, up and down and every which way! Consequently I'm planning on drilling those out to clearance holes and fitting new lead screws to each (metric) with brass acme thread nuts into the enlarged holes and new teflon coated metric lead screws. Have to see how it pans out. 🤔😁

Interesting upgrade especially since I have basically the same lathe. Although, I probably miss the skills and needed tools to copy this idea.

I think you would do just fine. Thanks for watching!

Maybe when I got a bit more experience and a mill :)

I like your solution, this may work out on modifications that I plan for my Atlas 618.

I'm really happy with it thus far. I was a little leary of the deep groove taking the thrust in the one direction but it works surprisingly well. Significant improvement over how it was.

It's really a significant improvement over the plain bearing setup. I'd say go for it. You might need to machine the entire collar for the Atlas but it wouldn't be that big of a job.

My plan is to build a new cross slide with "T" slots in it and a fixed tool post. A very ambitious project for sure.

Nice video, any reason why you put the bearings in that order, I would have thought it would be better the other way round with the trust bearing first?

What is the swing on your Standard Modern? Great podcast and enjoy your videos.

It is branded as a 12x30 Utilathe but can actually swing just over 13". Super nice lathe for a home shop - big and rigid enough but light enough to move around or put in a basement if you wanted to.

Hi, I have the same lathe and I can't remove the pin that attaches the handle to the drive shaft so I gave up. Did you find it difficult to remove this pin?
