Fixing a Screaming Vice

After last video, I was in the mood to tackle a more bite-sized project. If you've seen many of my past videos you've seen and likely heard this vice before. The screw made a terrible screeching noise, and I wanted that to stop being the case.
I remember poking at this ages ago in a lame attempt to fix the same issue, but I got stymied pretty quickly. Something about how the vice went together made it difficult to disassemble, and I wasn't up for the challenge at the time. I couldn't quite remember the details, but it turns out that the screw stops are cross-drilled roll pins, and there's no way to hammer them through without drilling out the casting.
Well, with better tools and increased determination I went after it again for this video. The pins ended up being no big deal; I managed to pull them out with vice-grips. I was surprised that worked, but hey, I'll take my wins where I can get them.
I also discovered that the threaded portion of the main vice body was a bolted-on piece, and the lone bolt was totally loose. This has likely been the entire issue for all these years. That was another win; I was afraid the threads were going to be jacked up, which would have been a much harder repair.
Of course, while I had the thing apart I smoothed out all the sliding surfaces with a file and just generally cleaned everything up. I also tapped the screw for small bolts to replace the roll pins so if I ever have to take this thing apart again it'll be super easy.
Once back together the vice runs smooth and quiet. It's a real treat to use now. S'always nice when things go well.
