Here's a video tutorial on how to fix the ears on the MR2's soft top based on the spyderchat post by outofthebox. Link to keytechniques reinforced strap: www.keytechniqu... for more help, please visit spyderchat.com/ !
I live on the small island of Curacao, and I just bought a MRS yesterday. 2003 Japanese right hand drive, 6 speed manual. These cars are very rare on the island, maybe 4 in total. This is great video, please make more. You got a new subscriber.
The strap on my MR2 was inside the top, not connectected or routed through the correct tunnel. I was able to route it properly and resolved my ears! Great video.
someone watching my MR2 review on youtube (crap review btw) kindly pointed out that mine had spyder ears and to search for the remedy, found yours, great job thanks!
Very helpful Thankyou! Bought my MR2 in September (uk) and have only today removed hardtop to inspect soft top as we are having an unusually warm February in England. This video is great as the straps aren’t attached on mine at all so thanks again 👍🏼
Thank you so much. I always wondered what those straps were about. I mean Toyota don't just fit things for no reason, so just tucked them up out of the way and scratched my head in confusion. As to the ears (great terminology)(better than those bits that stick out at either side) part of the equation, never put the two components together, just studiously stuffed them under manually. Can't wait till tomorrow to go out and play. I live in Melbourne, Australia and my Spyder is garaged 95% of the time, and she usally only comes out in fine weather, so the roof is down most of the time, but knowing how to put the top down properly is a bonus, especially when trying to look cool parking in Lygon Street on Saturday night (look it up, we have a great night life scene here). Now I need to work on the hard part, how to personally look cool, and not some creepy old bloke. Any advice?
I hope it's not coming too late! owning a spyder in Australia is already uniquely cool. to make yourself cool a good pair of sunglasses and good clothes go a long way. If that fails, wave money around.
Thank you! I never even knew it was supposed to do this automatically. I've spent 11 years forcing all the extra material down into the space between the top and the trunk. Mine doesnt have a long strap but there are stretchy cords that attach to the top. Once I moved the piece of strap with the snaps out of the way it closed perfectly.
Cool trick, Wouldn't have found out if this didn't pop up in my recommendations. 5 minute job. No long term effects on the top folding differently I hope?
Thanks. Mine came with the strap uninstalled and one of the buttons pre-crushed. Now I have to see if I can repair or replace the button. I have always pushed the ears in manually, which means you have to walk around the car. Not the end of the world but it would be nice to make it work properly.
I got my MR2 from a dude who kinda riced it so it's got a CAI, header-back exhaust that rasps, strut bars, missing the frunk plastics, it's somehow lowered but the suspension looks stock so I'm afraid to jack it up and see cut springs, and finally permanent ears because the top ripped in several places but especially the stitching where the ears form. It's too late!
great vídeo. good job. i already try do this but softtop is stiff and to fold it with no ears it seams the soft top will crack with so much force i have to do to fold it. so remove the thing any way and Stay with ears ;)
Hi I did this just today on my car. Perfect tip... but unfortunately my soft top is soo stiff that I am unable to lower it fully. Anyone knows how to soften up the material? Except heat?
I can't seem to find the link to the website you mention for MR2 owners, keytechnique or something, could you share that site for parts for the MR Spyder again? Thanks allot
Did this to mine however the straps with the yellow stickers tend to get caught forward in the moving parts when I then lift the roof again any one else having a similar problem?
