A couple recommendations to go along with this video, remove the silver strip on the bottom of the front light kit before putting it down, and the adhesive used is LOCA, it is UV activated, once you put it on set the screen down in the sun for a few minutes and once it's totally cured replace the silver strip.
johneygd I think the camera really enhances how bright it looks. It's by no means a perfect solution, you can see bleeding around the edges, but it's much easier to see. For under $20, it's a great mod to do
Good vid, but they recommend you peel off the silver part on the panel to let the loca under it cure too. If you don't you run the risk of getting a spidering effect later on.
Chris Williams I haven't done this mod sence 2015,but i believe it's when the loca you thought was cured starts to cure improperly and causes the loca to spread spider-web like strans across the screen.
Chris Williams it's basically what RetroGamer Review said, and it only happens to Gameboy that have had a front light mod installed with loca. Basically the loca has to have an even stream of UV light in order to dry. If a portion of it does not dry properly you run the risk of it running across portions that already have. This creates little streams of unevenly dried loca and it gives it this bothersome "spidering" effect because it looks like webs.
Julio Saldana thanks for clearing that up for me. Back when I had the gameboy advance I had a the light that connects to the top of the gameboy so that I could play low light. My second gameboy was that gameboy advance sp which already came with a backlight already installed so I never really experienced the spidering effect.
Also, the yellow stuff near the solder points at the bottom looks like cap-juice... if so, your capacitors are leaking, please clean it up and replace your caps to preserve your gameboy! That stuff is pure liquid evil for electronics; it will eat away your board and traces, rendering it useless. It is in its early stages, so it can be easily saved. Then again, this was over a year ago... please consider this!
I just found you channel and I fell in love with it. I been looking for a side hobby now that I’m not a mechanic anymore. I just want to pick you brain on some of the I can use to begin small repairs and website you use to buy all the items.
I saw someone else ask this and I thought the same. Did you remove the plastic protector from the front of the screen before installing it back in the case?
Maybe it's just your camera, but it look unbearably bright to me. :/ When I did the frontlight mod on mine, I used an original SP light and a resistor. If I were to redo the mod with this kit, I think I'd hook up a potentiometer to be able to change the brightness. Otherwise, very nice and clean install!
That's a good idea. It would make for a relatively easy mod, as there's lots of slack in the wires. Could attach another wheel to the side or bottom of the game boy just like the volume knob
RetroRepairs Oops, sorry, I was actually talking to OP who did the mod with the SP panel. Stupid RU-vid reply system, I posted public instead of direct to him. xD I also think we're talking about two different mods. I don't mean Benn Venn's AGS-101 backlit mod, I mean the frontlit mod with the 001 light panel that OP mentioned. Essentially the same as yours but using spare parts instead of buying a kit. :)
RetroRepairs it's better than the tube. Much more even. Also more than doubles the battery life switching to led. You should test that game boy against one without the mod to see the difference in battery life
RetroRepairs have you done a game gear? I've picked up a bunch cheap on eBay that were dead and all they needed were new caps. That would be a good tutorial
hey man I just subscribed your channel i like it, a friend gift me 2 GBC but both of them have the polarizer filter burn, do you know where to buy replacement filters? thanks
Hey I've been noticing a lot of people complaining about the silent intros so I made a really simple retro style beat. Wanna check it out? Its a simple little 10 second .wav file and I think it would be really good to fill in the void of silence at the begging.
I got one of these kits for a game gear I was working on. The biggest issue was the hot spots on the bottom. Other than that (and the install difficulty on that system) not too bad
The display certainly looks great, but I have my reservations about essentially destroying the top half of the shell to fit everything in place. I understand the top two screws aren't even usable anymore?
Nimble Mountain a $30 DS Lite is by far the best solution for GBA games. Plus with a $10 flash cart you have the whole DS library always in the console.
First off, this was a VERY informative video! There seem to be a lot of tech-savvy people here. Understanding this is an old video, I have a question. Does this mod affect the battery life significantly? I wouldn't imagine it would be super noticable, but it's got me wondering.
I don't think it would affect the battery life as you're only adding few LEDs to the board.. But I think the light is too bright, and I would recommend adding a small resistor to reduce the brightness. Obviously, there are other more advanced mods that use actual backlit LCD panels, but these require some fancy equipment and a lot of painful and slow work (also they are by far more expensive than this simple one). Check this one here: Part 1: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aBe4gtacweY.html Part 2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aBe4gtacweY.html (P.S. these are too long videos, so I recommend you skip as much as you can to see what parts you need, what modifications you need to make, and what result to expect)
@@mondherbouazizi4433 Incredible! that is very detailed and helpful! I appreciate your time and effort :) I also appreciate the links, but they both go to the same video. I was able to find part 2 in the sidebar with no problems, though :) Given what I saw in those videos and your advice, I think I will just put a resistor in.
You really need to add some music to your intro, or something moving (maybe a slow zoom effect). Every single time I think i didn't start the video and click on it just too see that it was actually running...
I swear i dont remember the screen on the gbc being as awful as it really is. This really makes a huge difference. One thing i might do next time is put a potentiometer on this so the brightness can be adjusted
RetroRepairs oh yea it was always playable and great fun because I guess we didn't know any better back then huh? :) Also isn't there a brightness wheel for the GBC screen? But yea definitely needs to be able to lower the brightness. Neve thought I'd say that about a GBc lol
Oh yea I remember! My bro had the og fat game boy then we both got GBC for Christmas one year :) I had turquoise and Pokémon blue and he got purple like yours and fire red
There are so many videos showing you how to mod a Game Boy Color. After all this modding, do you really still have a Game Boy Color? Why not keep your collectible GBC as is, and just buy a GB Boy Colour clone system? Look for more reviews of this device right here on RU-vid...it's a very highly recommended console! The GB Boy Colour can be found on Amazon & eBay in, well...many different colors! Some solid, some translucent...mine is the Clear Green, and it works great!
This mod makes it more desirable to players. Before knowing this mod existed, I would have never even considered buying a GBC and just stuck with my GBA SP and that awkward bulge when playing GB/C games. I've had friends with original GBAs and never understood how they could play their games on that dark mess. Because I know about this mod, I ordered two GBCs and plan on modding both.
RetroRepairs The Color can't be backlit without changing the entire screen. They don't make kits like that for the Pocket, it's a whole different mod. :)
RetroRepairs If I've learned anything today, it's don't reply to comments when you're half asleep and focused on another task... That's twice I've misinterpreted your replies today, I'm so sorry... xD
RetroRepairs - OK. Just didn't see it in the vid, so thought that might be it. Great video though. Nice job. I'm going to light mine up too after this.
I have a doubt, I do not know if it is for the camera, but the front light looks bluish, is that how it really looks? or you can appreciate the colors on all the white that is white and not blue, thanks
Do you have have any recommendations on cleaning the front screen? I found my brothers and my gbcs. They both work perfect still but one is almost faded looking and seems to have some type of white film over it and can’t seem to get it off.
If I were doing this mod I would have added a switch or a pot for the light. Was it just the camera or did this instantly turn that GB color to a classic black and white with a purple shell?
Ash King I think using an actual Color game to demonstrate would've been a better idea, the Pokémon games only have basic palettes added to color them. I think the colors already look a little weak in comparison to an actual Color game, so with the bright light, I do think you get a better effect than with original non-color games. :)
Any advice on how to clean heavy battery corrosion from an OG Black and White Gameboy? I tried with just normal baking soda paste and it didn't do much. I'm almost tempted to just desolder the battery terminals and soak them in something to remove it. It works fine over the wall outlet, but battery terminals are no good.
Thankls for the quick reply. I'll probably just remove them then. If I can't get them clean enough then I'll just find a for parts one and replace them.
RetroRepairs I understand.if you do ever start a online store i would diffenetly be interested.i just subbed the other day love ur videos I've been binge watching all your older videos
better if you add a tiny switch to power off/on the light :D if you do a good work you add it with tiny switch on the board without destroy the case or maybe something to set the brightness is too high as well
I can't recall off hand what i have, but i use a smaller conical tip, and a wedge shaped tip. I find the cone tip too small sometimes to hold enough heat unless it's very fine work
I figured you would've tried to use BennVenn's backlighting method. Backlit GBCs are a thing now, and it really puts the frontlight to shame. I mean, just look at this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YaXVsEz9R-Y.html It's beautiful.
I've seen that. Only problem is you need to get a back lit screen from a gba (don't have), and you cut up the whole front shell which I'm not a fan of. This is a much less intrusive method, although like you mention, the quality isn't as good as a true back lit screen
Why did you changed your channel logo to the parody of Pied Piper from that Silicon Valley tv show 😂 (jk)? Not trying to be mean, I just liked previous logo better personally.
I had a couple sent to me. I didn't have a banner on my channel, and they made a logo to match. I might change the logo back, as it doesn't stand out from the banner well
RetroRepairs oh ok! Btw you should create like a twitter for this sort of stuff like feedback, some behind the scenes things and updates, it would be a nice additional promotion of the channel.
I might try that. I also thought about filling the air gap between the front lens and the front light with loca for the best possible image. Im just not sure how thick you can apply this stuff. Might try find a cheap gbc to experiment with
No, i haven't. I've got another gbc, so might make a video doing this on that. I recently did an original game boy screen and lens recently if you check my videos
How to install: Step one: Have someone who knows how install it Step two: Pay said person for their time and effort Step three: Enjoy your newly modded gameboy color :D
