Electrical Diagnostic Video
In today's video, I'll be walking you through the steps I took to diagnose a White Outdoors Zero Turn, model ZT50 and a Toro Riding Mower.
The ZT50 was an easy fix, it turned out to be a bad Reverse switch on the Left hand side of the mower (which caused the machine to think it was in reverse) thus not allowing the PTO (blades) to be engaged.
Mowers now a days have safety switches, to prevent injury, and this has reverse switches which prevent you from cutting while going backwards.
The Toro on the other hand, wouldn't turn over the engine, but everything worked fine.
After going through all the safety switches and key switch, and testing the starter and the solenoid, I determined (by process of elimination) that the issue was a bad ground wire going to my solenoid!

Bravo! Best lesson in electrical diagnostics I've seen. I used to work on many different vintage cars and trucks. Occasionally I would trace the problem and find everything working properly with good external connections but the starter still wouldn't turn. In those cases I found the mechanical part of the solenoid was at fault. In other words I would hear the solenoid click when trying to start the engine but still the starter wouldn't turn. Back in those days I would take the solenoid apart and reverse the copper connector to present a clean new surface across the heavy lugs and place the solenoid back into service for another 20 years or so. Lesson being, just because you hear the click the solenoid may not be making connection in the high amperage circuit.

This was it! I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why two different PTO clutches and two switches weren't getting the PTO to engage, turns out the right side reverse safety switch had gone bad. Jumping that switch got my mower deck to engage every time. Thank you so so so much

Very Well Explained Video. I Once Had To Undo The Whole Wiring To Find a Short Between Two Wires. Kept Blowing The Fuse. Took About an Hour To Undo All The Tape Etc & Find The Problem, Then Fix The Wire And Re-Tape it All Back Together. Plus I Re-Routed The Harness Away From The Steering Parts & Other Stuff That Could Probably Catch The Harness & Damage Wiring. I Hate Wiring Myself.Because U Have To Test For broken Wires, Shorts, & Possibly Corroded Wires, Switches E T C , Can Be A Real Ass Of a Job.. I Bought A Power Probe They Are Excellent Bit Of Gear. U Can Test If The Wire Is A Power Wire, Negative Wire, Send Power Direct To What Ever U Want. I LOVE IT ..

Much Gratitude! (just watching Spartacus again), fought with this for days. Originally I had seized spindles and no PTO, replaced everything and still no PTO. All tests said the PTO should work. Ah the reverse switch, mine is different than yours using a ground system and was bent, thus always grounded so no PTO as the tractor thinks it is in reverse!!

I have a problem with my Ride on mower Toro XLS 420T. the pto is in operation at all times, the pto switch is in the off position and the pto only turns off when I turn off the engine, with the engine and pto running I put the pto switch in the on position the engine turns off by itself, . Do you have any idea what it could be? Any help will be appreciated.

Great video very informative but on zero turn my zero turn the PTO on it runs for a minute or two sometimes turns off occasionally it won’t even turn on at all, so I’m going to start the diagnostic process. I did notice though I was under my zero turn looking things over while it was running and the PTO engaged but not running there was sparks flying from what I think is a clutch plate (maybe)of some sort is this common if it is, let me know. If not what do you think it is thanks from the state of Washington.

@@EliminatorPerformance one quick question: if I have my key in the on position, but the engine not actually running, if I pull the PTO switch, should I get 12v at the clutch? or does the engine have to be running?
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 5 лет назад
As far as I know, the engine does not have to be running. In the video, you'll see how I do a 12v test on the PTO Clutch, the engine was off, but the key was in the on position. You could test that though by probing the PTO Clutch connector, and with the engine off (key in on position) flip the PTO switch and see if you have 12v at the connector. However, if you have a safety switch issue, it may not be sending 12v to the PTO Clutch.

Thank you for posting this video. I'm working on an old ZT50 and it's got the exact same problem. Both reverse safety switches have been dangling by the wire harnesses for years. It was the previous owners way of bypassing them. It's been working that way right along but I'm afraid they must have gotten moisture inside and corroded the contacts. One got so hot from the high resistance it melted the plastic safety switch housing. I haven't had a chance to check continuity through the other switch yet but it's so corroded inside that I can't even depress the plunger. I'm considering just running a new wire from the PTO switch to the PTO clutch and eliminate the reverse safety circuit all together. Our newer zero turn mowers never even had that feature. Thanks again for the video because there isn't much info out there and I wasn't sure what the original purpose of the switches actually was. Now I know and I won't feel bad about eliminating all that crusty wire and bad connections.

Hi, any update for your mower? I have the exact same problem right now and trying to find a fix for it. I have a brand new pto clutch and wire, and my reverse safety have been zip tied to the harness since I bought it. Do I just remove the wire that runs to the safety switch/buttons?
@KX220R
@KX220R Год назад
@@zackj6274 Hello, It's been a while since I did the work. If I remember right, I cut the wire that runs through the reverse safety switches a few inches from the PTO switch and spliced in a new wire from the PTO switch directly to the clutch. It's worked perfectly ever since. Getting a new clutch is a good idea. I found out the hard way that adjusting the air gap on a weak clutch may only work for a short time. It was drawing too much current and cooked my brand new switch. Once I had a new clutch and another new PTO switch it's been fine.
@zackj6274
@zackj6274 Год назад
@KX220R thanks for the reply, I may try your method. So I ordered a new pto clutch to replace mine after the original had wear in the wire connecting to it leading to it not getting power. After unplugging the reverse safety switches I tried turning the mower on to test the clutch but nothing was getting power. I've been a bit confused with the wiring because the new clutch has a black/red wire while the harness from the mower has a blue (spliced into 2 running to each side for reverse safety switches) and a green wire that splices to a ground on the side of the frame as well as running to the key/ignition. So I think your method might make things much easier

What would cause a mower to stay running while key is in the off position?
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 4 года назад
A bad key switch or a disconnected kill wire at the coil. Someone probably had a bad safety switch, so they just disconnect the coil kill wire and the machine will start and run. I've seen machines sold like that.

Thanks for the video. I'm curious... I was mowing today and the blades slowly disengaged several times. I parked the tractor to do some research. After returning to investigate the fuses, now the mower won't start. It's not even clicking in the solenoid to start. My question is, would a bad PTO switch keep the mower from starting / starter engaging. Sounds dead. ( Not the battery.) I would appreciate you advice.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 3 года назад
If the mower thinks the pto is engaged, it won't turn over the engine and the solenoid won't click. Same as bad brake switch, mower thinks you don't have the brake applied and won't send 12v to solenoid.

@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 года назад
You probably have a bad safety switch preventing the mower from starting. If you jump the solenoid you bypass those switches. Usually the seat switch grounds the coil and prevents spark, and the brake switch prevents the engine from turning over (engaging the solenoid).

Great videos and thanks for publishing them. I have a problem on my Snapper 150 zero turn that I think may be the PTO clutch. I'm going to test it when I get home, thanks to you other video, but it's a weird one. I'll mow for a few minutes and then the blades disengage and the mower dies. After a few minutes of sitting on it, I can hear an audible click of what I believe is the clutch and I know that I can start her up and mow again for a few more minutes. Needless to say that this pretty frustrating. Hoping to use your videos to fix it. Any ideas? Thanks again.

Intermittent Reverse safety switch. I'd start by testing the switches at the hand levers! Machine could think you're trying to go in reverse and shut it down. But being electrical, it could be anything. You basically have to go over everything 1 by 1.
@pezatsea
@pezatsea 5 лет назад
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks for the response. I don't believe my mower has a reverse safety. There are no stickers or notices on the machine or in the manual itself. Today it would run for 3 minutes and shut off for anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes until I would hear something, I thought it was the PTO, click and then I could start up and go again. Something fishy is going on. The PTO clutch is drawing 3.3 ohms, so enough resistance, but something is happening after mowing for three minutes. Thanks again.

Has anyone ever run into an issue with the PTO not engaging after it has disengaged approximately 6 times? My cub cadet rzt 50 is doing this. If I go in reverse which disengaged the PTO or I have to manually shut the PTO off via the switch a certain amount of times it will not re-engage. I thought maybe it was the clutch overheating, but I can turn the PTO off after mowing for an hour and it will turn back on. It doesn’t matter the length of time it has been engaged. If I turn it on and off a certain number of times in 20 minutes or 2 hours it will eventually not turn back on again. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Seems a little odd that they built a zero turn mower that won't cut in reverse. It automatically disengages the blades if even one of the lap bars is in the reverse position? Isn't that the point of a zero turn mower? Still good info here, it just seems weird that they built it to work that way. It would drive me nuts if the blades stopped every time one tire went backwards.
