So the knocking red mower was fixed. And it magically turned green in the process. Interesting indeed. Fugazy -ish.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Год назад
I said I changed the deck as the red one is going to be used on another project. The engine cowling wasn’t put back on at the end as I wanted access to the governor which is hidden under that cowling. It’s the same engine… you think I’d go to that much trouble NOT to show the result? 😂
@joeymitchell3863
@joeymitchell3863 Год назад
What did you use to compress the rings?
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Год назад
Where necessary I’ll use a plastic ring compressor, however, this cylinder has a tapered hole which means you can just feed it in by hand without the need for a tool.

I tried that smoke trick with a sparkler one time. Once the fire department got things under control, one of the guys came up to me with a bit of attitude. Seems that around eight gallons of freshly crafted moonshine in the back of the shed hindered their efforts somewhat. Then the ATF showed up. 👍🍻

If its making a noise, I can't hear it. Whats your confidence level on this being a long lasting repair?
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Год назад
Hey Scott! Hmm I have no idea honestly and no expectations. Some have told me they think it will last a long time, others think it may last a season. I have since learnt that I shouldn’t use lapping compound on ally so that may shorten its lifespan. I’m keeping an open mind but will keep everyone updated :)

I see a red mower in the start with a knocking engine, and a repaired green one with no knock being shown as the repaired one. The engine even looks different.

@@VintageEngineRepairs True, I was wondering how that happened. lol I have a (I think) a very old Briggs & Stratton with a kick starter on it. Is there an email addy I can send you pics of it to help identify it? I have looked around alot on the web with no real success.

@@VintageEngineRepairs Oh, forgot to mention in my other response. Why not just put in a shim to take up the clearance in the rod? My dad drove trucks way back in the day going through college and he once had to use an aluminum can piece as a shim in a diesel truck on the road side.

Couldn’t hear anything over the engine. I have to disagree though, I think it is absolutely worth it. A good mower will cost you a few hundred dollars. Even replacing the crank and rod will cost you a couple hundred. This is a cheap fix, basically the price of a gasket and maybe the seal and you’re good to go.

How much is "expensive?" Comparing a mew con rod to a short block or another engine, a new rod is cheap. A mew rodut, only if the journal is not out of spec.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Год назад
They are between 55-75 Australian dollars for a new conrod!
