Wow! That MTD adapter is nice. Strong! So once again, Don shows us how to do it ourselves. Easy and simple, especially given the part number. We can save money fixing it ourselves. That “air cleaner in the upright position” is also an important tip. 😊

New push mowers, self-propelled or not, are considered throwaway items since the last 5-10 years. That was never the case before. Expensive push mowers are made shoddy these days, so imagine what kind of garbage a YARDWORKS is. That MTD part is probably much better than what came on it. MTD makes products from manufacturer submitted specs, so the part you bought is probably much better. Nice find and easy fix, Don. Way to go.

Another benefit of this conversion is the key is cast as part of the blade adapter itself, of relatively soft metal, adding a bit of a "fuse" per se to the crankshaft in the event the blade suddenly stops again.

Those two little "bumps" that engage the two holes in the blade are designed to perform the same function as a "key" does. I prefer an actual key. They cheap to replace.

I once bought a mower that wouldn't start & it also had no blade or adapter. I cleaned the carburetor, I was anxious to see it run. Without the blade & adapter it would kick back hard. Now it's one of the best mowers I've ever had.

@robertwilliams3983

@@gadasavideos8564 true, but putting the new blade & adapter on fixed mine. This is the second season I've used it with no problem. Apparently the blade spinning when you pull the starter rope keeps it from kicking back too. It's one of the best mowers I've ever had. The high lift blade throws the grass out with a good bit of force, which keeps the deck clean & unclogged.

I'm guessing it was messing up the initial inertia/turning of the engine as the blade is part of the fly wheel mass as far as the engine is concerned.
@KC_justme
@KC_justme Год назад
Yes! The blade was still tight enough on the collar to also rotate, but because the collar was bent & the collar pins did not lock the blade - the blade would constantly shift, in jerking motions. And the blade would actually be lagging behind that locked collar rotation - this jerking in a backward motion. Bucking the engine so to speak. And because it bucked the engine rotation the recoil was also being affected. Possibly jamming those recoil latches. Hope this helped in understanding why that motor ran/made noise as it did.

I was expecting a flywheel key. I wish there had been some explanation of how the damage underneath could cause the pull rope kickback (and even the non-start problems we saw at the beginning). Just imbalance conveyed back through the crankshaft? And that must have been a replacement blade that came in on the mower, correct? With the damage to the spindle, the old blade must have been like a piece of abstract art?

The radiator bearings had failed. My actual guess is that when they bent the adapter and the blade flopped around, it misaligned the very cheap recoil starter there (vibration). So once out of every 5 times with the blade flopping around in there, it would misalign because...it could. I don't know if that one has the single metal arm, the double metal arms, or the double plastic arms, but I do know they are not exactly designed for a great fit or longevity...just cheapness. That is one of the plastic carbs...so yeah...not exactly "quality assured". I miss the old plastic carb on the metal tank with the built in primer bulb. Worst case scenario, you just replaced the spring and the rubber diaphragm. With the all-plastic ones...not much you can do. They tend to suck air when they get hot or old. Or both.

Question - at 3:20 you show the original blade and adapter. Looks like one of the holes on the blade is a full hole while the other is a half hole. Looking at the adapter it s the same.
