The reason the pins have chattering on them is because you needed to centre drill the end and use a live centre to keep it completely still while machining, it's also best to use coolant while machining. It would have been much better to use phosphorus bronze, or Aluminium Bronze or even Manganese Bronze for bushings and press them into the rollers, making sure they have grease holes and grease grooves to allow the grease to flow. You could have also used heavy duty tapered roller bearings. Many ways to fix this. 👍😀
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants 2 года назад
Yeah. I was just like "umm got this pipe lets use this " 😂
@ScottSillis
@ScottSillis 2 года назад
@@Ants_Pants I understand, but you should always use a live centre where possible unless over a certain diameter for certain materials. Just makes tolerances much easier. Longer stock you can use a steady rest if you have one. 👍😀
@chrisoakey9841
@chrisoakey9841 Год назад
And if you can't stop the chatter with a live center then you need to take less material and slower.

for the swing cylinder of your excavator : clean up the cylinder neatly with sanding line until everything is smooth as a baby bottom , and then you take a piece of old fire hose the length of the fully extended cylinder , then you first lubricate the whole chrome part of the cylinder with acid-free white Vaseline (this does not affect the rubbers) against the rust, then put the fire hose over it on both sides with a tyrep or hose clamp that it stays in place. and now that often unused cylinder has been given a nice and very cheap (free) protective sleeve. Sincerely Hollandduck from the Netherlands
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants 2 года назад
This was actually a very good tip sir. Thanks for that ill try to find a fire hose that would fit this cylinder. Another option would be to just take it off and replace it with a solid ram, but then if i needed to move it once every 2 years i would need to take it off 🤣 Your idea is pure gold. Thanks again for the tip.

good idea, I did something similar but did it whilst I had the cylinders apart. I added moto cross front fork gators from my older RM 125 they work perfectly but you have to do it when the cylinders are totally torn apart. you can buy a 2 piece gator that glues together but they don't last long in my meager experience

The rollers aren't getting stuck, they are all different diameters, due to wear, and some are clearly not making contact with the chains. You could build them up with weld and turn them in a lathe. I think you did the right thing, considering the age of the machine, and time over money considerations. 10/10 for effort.

@@Ants_Pants any part which sticks out a long distance should use the tailstock. If the distance is twice as long as the diameter the tailstock is a good idea. So if your shaft is 25 mm and it sticks out more than 50 mm I always use the tailstock

Great job ! For the hours you use it, your inexpensive repairs will last years. Some of the bottom rollers weren't getting stuck...Looked to me like they stopped because they were not always contacting the track chain...probably because of the flat cement floor & plus the rollers on either side of the "stuck ones" have slightly larger diameters (or closer to the floor) and were always contacting the track chain... Check the ones you thought were getting stuck when you get the machine outside on the dirt.

The reason you have air bubbles, slag inclusions and porosity in your welds is because you have not cleaned all the grease out. It would have been better to machine the centre on a lathe so it's clean and use Isopropyl alcohol to clean prior to welding. Also make sure you use the correct welding rods for example 16TC rods which are low hydrogen.

When adding grease fittings to the rods that support the rollers, no need to cut off excess rod, drill a hole for the fitting, tap the hole and then weld a piece of pipe to the rod end to protect the grease fitting. Instead, simply countersink the grease fitting. In other words, drill a hole into the rod, then drill the hole wider (wide enough to get your grease gun onto the grease fitting), then tap the deeper hole to accept your grease fitting and install it. The grease fitting will be below the out edge of the rod and will be protected. Fun to watch you work the problem. As others have said, many ways to fix the issue.

Rollers and their supports/mounts needed some filling weld, which i then machined down in lathe. I put grease channels through the pins in between the bearings and took out dust guards facing inwards. To get better protection for the bearings against rocks, twigs and mud, i put thick exhaust pipe hanger O-rings on each side. 15€ total for those 12 rings.

You could bore the rollers on a lathe and insert drum wheel bearings from a car,wich can be very cheap,even new. They are small enough to fit easily,and pins or even sleeves around the stock bolts in the bearing inner diameter would work well. adding material on the rollers outside perimeter by welding can be done,you can machine them like new. You can cut patches on car tire thread and bolt them on the steel track pads,one patch every few pads would be enough to eliminate damage on your concrete.
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants 2 года назад
Thanks Mich. Yeah the possibilities are endless one just needs the right tools, know how to use them and some insight into machining. As i lack all of those i just figured a option that i can get away with. Im sure they will last a while for me. As for some of the rollers that dont wanna turn i think its caused by my fault. I should have used a step drill to make the holes bigger, because i used a holesaw the rollers are not on a same level some are few mm higher some lower, can even see it that the roler only spins if it becomes into contact with the track. I think overtime it will even out and all of them should roll nicely.

33:57 You got to resonance frequency of the setup, ie it started to jump/flex and after every touch it jumped again and kept doing this. Should have used the head stock to support the end from flexing and maybe feed speed was not suitable, or insert was worn out. Nothing that cannot be fixed. You can prolong the life of the insert by sharpening it with diamond file if you want to cut costs, not that those are expensive per say, but its one of those cumulative costs. Also it could been smarter to have those locking flanges on the inside of the track so if you need to hammer them out you could do it from the outside in and get more umpf to hits, but now maintenance is easier if those wont get stuck and could and should be done more often for the rollers.

When you machined the pins you should have supported the free end with a center support. The shaft flexed as you tried to machine it, thus your pin diameter is inconsistent.

I have been saving this one for a while but had to take a first short look now. Your humor is really great man, love it! Was a bit worried when you climbed down that deep pipe but glad that it went well….🤣 OH! You should get a new pressure washer, that thing you have sure seems to have seen better times. It was cool that the 2 idler wheels where OK considered the condition of the rest.
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants 2 года назад
Lol i went to the shop, determination was super high. i Was like "okey time for new pressure washer", then i got to the washer department and was like "ummmm 40bucks for the repair part or 400 bucks for the new washer 🤔" safe to say my determination dropped like a rock once i exited the shop 😂😂

If you can locate some old used conveyerbelt about 2 ft. wide you could cut it the length of the tracks and run the excavator on them so it doesn’t destroy the floor.

Your front bottom rollers were not rotating all that well after you put it back together. But you had to swap the fronts for the backs as I recall because the front's were not rotating before you tore into it. So the problem is not in your rebuild solution, but rather in how the track goes over the adjuster wheels I think. Super glad you put zerk fittings on the lower pins as well. Grease before every use and they should last forever. Good enough.
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants Год назад
they were not rolling because of the flat surface of the concrete, on uneven ground this is not a issue

Dang, I can’t believe you did that!!! I think the rollers will improve when you get it on the ground because of the weight of the machine, I hope so anyway, the ground is not even like the concrete. just going through all your vids one after the other. Keeps getting better and better, really enjoy it! Can´t wait to see how crap-job-6000 will doin the future. It´s definetely not perfect, but saving 3k€ and having a lot better roller performance than before...? Perfect I say! If it turns out the pins with the markings wear out, you can probably exchange them pretty easy now. As long as the rollers don´t wear out... but anyways, that should still be good for many years now and you can spend the money on more important repairs in case sth breaks that you can´t really fix your way. Thanks for your efforts and sharing! I like your sense of humor, you deserve 10 times the subscribers or more!!
