Honestly, the model's regular scheme makes sense for the character. He's the Lord Solar, a fantastical figure responsible for the guard of Holy Terra, though I also think he doesn't fit with the current way Guard has gone. I think if the Mordian Iron Guard or Volstroyan Firstborn had more presence, he wouldn't look that out of place, but as it stands, he definitely clashes with the current choices of Cadian, Krieg, and Catachan.

I see this take a lot regarding this model and can't disagree more. I've pretty much painted him as per the box art, I have a pretty grim, heavily weathered Valhallan guard army and Leontus absolutely POPS in the middle of them. the red and gold make him stand out like a beacon of hope. and the enemy see this magnificant figure and waste loads of fire on its bodyguard unit because it stands out so much. I feel like it totally matches the absurdity of 40K battles having a spotless shining medieval knight leading your tank assault! I love how... dumb it looks.

The grimdark got raised by several notches on this model when you sprayed the OSL on the eyes, that red is crazy

The appeal of the model to me is how different he is from everything else, he is the lord solar plastered in gold. Muddy it a bit, but the fact that he looks so different is cool in my oppinion a singular fancy man on horse, i may be biased in the fact i am making a krieg army and a shiny golden dude in the middle of that sound amazing.

The only issue with his is that he's not Yarrick

I think its a brilliant model tbh, and very 40k. A gleaming ornate general on a mutilated cyborg horse atop a pile of rubble, surrounded by beat-down mud-drenched soldiers is pretty damn 40k, and ties back heavily into artwork of Macharius himself, who wore freakin' angel wings to show off. I do not however like how its painted by GW - it'd look better if it was painted Forge World style. The main issue with it is that the Lord Solar is a very specific model that doesnt really match the vibe of most peoples Guard armies, but Guard have been suffering "must-take" models that ruin the theme for decades now.

I think the old fantasy mechanical horse would have instantly made him look more 40k

I honestly believe the pose of the model is the problem. It seems pretty generic. I wish GW posed the horse like the famous painting of Napoleon. It would have been a neat historical reference and fitting for the character of Lord Solar. He is supposed to be 40k's version of Alexander The Great/Napoleon. Anyways, great video and paint job! 😄

Jay you are by and far my favorite 40k youtuber, your enthusiasm is infectious and your painting skills are so damn good. So satisfying to watch your method, the results are always amazing

The best use I’ve found for transparent white is using it to mix highlights rather than normal white, the transparent helps brighten colours without desaturating them.

In those colours Leontus looks like he could lead the Adeptus Arbites too, which is cool! Good job!

An excellent paint job Jay. Funny that you say it doesn't feel "40k"; when i first saw this model at my local game store, I naively asked the store manager "what age of sigmar model is this 😯"

I've taken to using gloss varnish on anything metal. Matte or satin on leather and cloth. Just started painting again and forgot how much fun I had had when the miniature was done.

This is awesome. I 3d printed one and painted it for my Praetorian Guard army and posted it on the discord. I have to say if I ever get the actual model and kit bash it to be more tournament friendly, I am going to use/steal a lot of your tricks you use here to do it. Stellar job man. Seriously, wow!

I think what really undermines the default color scheme is the light blue suit under Leontus' armor. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the scheme, and it ends up making him look a lot more like a cartoony fop than he's supposed to. Give him a black or dark brown suit under the armor, instead, and I think even the default scheme will fit together better. Adding that awesome angled red glow effect on the eye is a certified chefs kiss, too.

I think he fits really well into the other army scheme, and the red robotic eyes are magical. I do feel like the model itself may require some kitbash, however. It either needs to be a lot more ostentatious OR a lot more utilitarian for 40k. It's kind of oddly sitting right in the middle and gives it an odd feel. The horse is amazing, but the actual guy I dunno.

This is paint job is the best I have sen on this model. It’s in that perfect grim dark spot for me. Big second renaissance vibe. Good job!

I think your model found a new issue with leo. He isn’t gold anymore, but now he is so blue it is hard to tell where horse ends and where man begins.

Bruh I love this model, I don't get why people dunk on it. This guy being part of the aristocracy in fancy armor on a mecha-horse leading guardsmen is fucking badass.

It looks good! I don’t mind the model in it self. 40K is a big place and anachronistic and decorative style is a thing with the Terran leadership. Having said that I’ve seen conversions where the steed, the rider or both have been given some hardcore 50k treatment. Leaving the barding off is a great idea for example. That shows more of the robotic horse.

Konstantine doesn’t need WD40, he needs WD40,000

It will be perfect to use Mechanical steed from Fantasy battles. The Empire had the kit 'Engineer on mechanical steed'.

Honestly, I originally wasn't going to get the model as I prefer not to play named characters in my custom guard regiment But I decided I will be getting one after this, i like the way it turned out and it makes the model look better to avoid having a named character though I'll convert him into a lord commissar

Leontus goes from looking out of place to being peak 40k by just swapping his head out for a Commisar head and using a different paintscheme. No other changes needed.

Yes, he looks much better and more fitting of 40k in your paint scheme. You make me actually want to get one for my guard army... but that price tag? I could get a whole tank for that price... maybe I'll kitbash one.

@EonsOfBattle Have you thought about kitbashing all the new jump pack units into a primaris jump chaplain? I've has some ideas but haven't put a bunch of thought into it.

I do think it's better especially with the decals giving it more an industrial look but I think he's too elevated and gleaming to really fit in on the battlefield

I do like the paint job as a part of the army it's supposed to go along with... I myself would have likely made him more 'military colours' or along the classic black and subtle red of a commissar... But that's because I am in the process of putting together a rather dark and dirty guard regiment. One that looks like it doesn't get much time to scrub their boots and fix chipped paint... But that is the thing that makes guard so interesting. There's everything from poster boy cadians to custom regiments and uniforms in all colors. Some made to fit a certain type of terrain, some just a random color as camouflage isn't part of their plan... Both can make sense in the universe.

It's a weird model for me. Jay's paint job is a lot better than the GW one, but there is just something "off" about a dude on a big metal horse in the 40k universe.

I would'a put a "I brake for Cadia" bumper sticker on Konstantin. Oh, wait, too soon?

It's not whether everyone agrees about the paint job; it's the cyber horse friends we made along the way.

As someone named Constantine, I see this as an absolute win.

It's an amazing paint scheme, but I think specifically the rider's clothes make it look fantasy. Atilan Roughriders look at home in Astra, because the riders have more sci-fi looking armour, but this model looks like it's wearing plate mail if you're not looking up close. It'd make more sense to have had a coat similar to a Castelan, and a more modest helmet. Yes, the Imperium are hyper religious, but the Guard have always been defined by a rugged utilitarianism stamped with hollow effigies of grandeur. "Here's your 800 year old Lasgun, with its chipped paint and blood encrusted Imperialis, fresh from the cold dead hands of its previous owner" Ultramarines are the espoused ideal of the Imperium's splendor, but Imperial Guard are the harsh reality of the 41st millennium. Even their squeaky clean leaders have a utilitarianism to their outfits. Basically I think that the vibe this model gives off fits better in the Ecclesiarchy's forces, or the Inquisition.

Im currently building the lord solar as a sentinel with some comms style attachments instaed of the main weapon and a servo arm with a power spear to replace conquest, his sword and a plasma pistol for his Revolver.

What red is the red if I may ask? Looks great for my blood ravens.

I think his paint scheme match him since he is lord solar which is why he have to has white fur( with a fansy human to accompany him)

I kinda just noticed this on the box art but its so weird that his pants are the same color as his shirt. Is he wearing a onesie under the armor?

I would have painted him like a WW1 tank and probably changed the helmet, in fact that's exactly what I'll do next.

No offense meant, but I think Pete the Wargamer’s conversion of this model into Yarrick was the real fix to this. Grounded the outfit and the colors, but maintained the level of heroism.

It's the most senior military commander... From an interstellar empire... Armed with literal PLANET KILLING WEAPONS... Fielding soldiers traditionally armed with LASER RIFLES and tanks the size of city blocks... And this crazy mf is wearing a sun headdress, carrying a sword, and riding a cyber horse. This is a rank that in any real world equivalent would NEVER enter combat, and very possibly never did. I would counter that nothing is MORE 40k. It doesn't necessarily fit with anyone's army, and it's not supposed to. This man would be at the head of an equally opulent and pompous honor guard larger than all real earth armies combined.

If I ever bought this model I would turn into a Kreig rider.

Cool paint choice but for me the problem is with horse's tail and guy's head. Maybe ih tail was in style of admech wiggly tentacles. Also maybe if iinstead of that sword just make him use chainsword and give the model pistol holster somewhere

The problem with the old paint job is that Konstantin doesn’t sell as cyber horse. All the details that show that are so small. Until you’re right up on it the model looks like a white horse with gold armor. In a world where the rough riders have a real, dirty, utilitarian style with their armor and weapons, the death rider horses have gas masks and claws, and the admech serbyrys cavalry just exist… Konstantin stands out for the wrong reasons in the setting. The gold look is too Custodes next to the regular guard.

I like his model. 40k is much more a fantasy game than it is sci-fi realistically, and it captured the high terran noble vibe quite well. I do understand why Guard players wouldn’t like it though.

Its really just the head for me, as soon as he has almost any other head im happy. I think the model works for the supreme leader of the guard but his head is what clashes the most for me.

I think it's the halo on his helmet. It looks particularly AoS, IMO. I do think you are right, the decals definitely make it look more 40k than fantasy.

I mean your criticism is fair, but thing that super grim dark about it is that he is the privilege elete that he was able to do all that to his horse. Make his horse look nice. I get the guardsmen next to him, would even survive a battle while he survived, 100 years.

He's the Lord Solar amd hails from one of the great noble houses of Holy Terra itself! He's supposed to look absolutely ridiculous next to normal guard troops. After all they are armed with standard guard tech used by trillions of imperial soldiers across the galaxy. Everything Leontus has is handcrafted or ancient relics made using technology that is lightyears beyond the humble lasgun. Even his horse is a technological marvel! When he shows up on a battlefield the lowly common soldiers should look at him the same way the dirty peasants looked at Arthur and his knights in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Awesome model… but to be fair he definitely looks like on of the old world Empire lords. If I played IG I’d still rock with him.

Literally all you need to do is switch the sword and the helmet, plus add a grimdark paint job

Transparent white is best used as an additive color. Marco, NJM, has a video where he uses a transparent white.

Yeah the reasons stated in the beginning of the video are why most of us Guard players have either kitbashed this model to be anything but the generic or made extremely different proxies.

Just looking at the model I had no idea it was a cybernetic horse.

Awesome paint job, though the decals are of the Cadian Gate and not an Astra Militarum command symbol. I think this is why most Horse Lord models don't have decals. He's in charge of the entire guard, all regiments so having Cadian symbols on him doesn't fit his position as the supreme commander

You did an amazing paint job, but I think that the head with the halo is too Stormcast-y… maybe a head swap with a Crieg guard could do the trick.

I think he looks great I’m not a fan of the power sword though I think I gold orange one like the emperor’s sword would look amazing I also think some cracked leather gloves and a bit more grime on his horse would go a long way
