If it comes loose, spray the adhesive on both the pad and the velcro. Let it dry for 20 minutes and put them together. That creates a permanent bond.

Cool thank you, great tip

You are supposed to spray both mating surfaces it’s true. 20 min seems long however. The can of spray adhesive should state how much let up time it wants for both surfaces to become tacky before joining.

This is a great idea. I even have most of the materials. I've been storing up sanders with bad plates. It's almost as much for a new plate as a new sander costs. I've been very impressed with Menard's store brand sander.

Fingèrs crossed that it works well. The velcro I used came from Axminster tools was Hermes brand and self adhesive, but it only seems to be available in 110mm wide strips. The biggest issue with a random orbit sander will probably be heat - if the machine is used for long periods without a break, the glue may start to break down. Now you have lots of spare velcro it will be easy to make specialized sanding blocks to suit your projects, and use up those old discs that still have a bit of life left in them!
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 3 года назад
Yes that's what I'm worried about, it's the heat but so far used it for about 1h constant and it's still ok

Generally, using this type of glue, you apply it to both items and wait until you can touch it without it coming off on your finger, though it's still tacky. The can will explain applications. Once both are "dry," you get one shot, because wherever it touches it sticks, well, like glue. You can use a couple sockets in two opposite holes to line up the pad when pressing it down. Just find two that fit relatively tightly in the holes. For smaller holes, dowels are, obviously, a better choice.

Works out at 50 pence per new repair even more of a bargain plus adhesive of course. If spray adhesive fails try contact adhesive like Evo Stick

@Casual DIY ...just a tip, i've been using spray adhesives (3M) for about 35yrs... if you want a more permanent adhesion you need to spray both the plate and the velcro let them setup (gass off) then put them together.... more or less these sprays are just contact cements just a consumer version of what they use to glue headlines in cars.... some of the cans of spray will even have two sets of instructions , one for temporary bond and one for permanent.....

Great thing to know. I broke 2 cheap sanders, so maybe I go for Makita too now as you managed to fix the problem. Was thinking if a laser cutter could be made to cut the velcro. I mean if it works, then you could quickly cut several replacement parts.

@CasualDIY 3 года назад
Thanks for watching 👍😁 I think laser could put the velcro on fire

Great idea! My first idea for the glue would have been something like „3M feathering disc adhesive“ which is used to glue pads to sanders not having hook and loop. Hope you are able to get the velcro off when it needs replacement or another session of sanding the sander 😂Anna

Contact adhesive (Evostick) that wont come off!! seems to be common with the Makita (or other brands as well?) a well designed failure, As I only use corded sanders (battery's are too heavy to use after about 30 mins on walls) I might change brands

I was wondering, is it possible to fit 150mm pad on this 125mm Makita sander. It uses almost the same watt motor as the model 6030 which is 150mm pad, so I think it should handle it ok. Can u do such experiment?
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 3 года назад
You can but the sanding disc will go over the sanders pad which means there will be no pressure going onto the wood from that part of the sanding disc which makes it pointless.

Did you factor in the spray adhesive, hole punch and Velcro, the hole punch alone would be more than £4. What size is the hole punch also? It’s a great idea though I’m in this position at the minute and was looking at buying a new pad, also have you any verdict on how the hook and loop you glued on compared to the aftermarket pad you bought. Keep up with the great videos
