While this is a nice idea I have to disagree with quite a few of the choices here, mainly because it gives the retro list the same issue I find with wiis retro selection and that’s lesser variety, your selection gives the list 2 ghost boardwalk tracks, 2 koopa beach tracks, 2 bowser castles and swaps having 2 quite varied chocolate tracks to 2 quite varied ice tracks, I personally think, apart from peach circuit, ds has a good retro selection for the time, while it has 5 circuits, again apart from peach circuit, they all have a lot of gameplay and visual variety and I wouldn’t want to change any of them because they play well in ds’s engine, the most I’d change is swapping peach circuit for riverside park and choco island for rainbow road and just have every retro cup rotate the track order so it’s not jarring to have the snes track at the end, like I said this is a nice idea I just don’t think it’s necessary
@Floofy_Hellhound With the Wii U Mario Kart 8 thing where if you die, you become a ghost that can pick up items to screw up other players. That'd be pretty fun imo
For the last race track, I agree with removing Yoshi Circuit as it's not really a grand finale, but I'd move it somewhere else, maybe the Banana Cup. For the final retro track cup, I'd probably say GBA Rainbow Road since Rainbow Road is the grand finale in the original tracks of every Mario Kart game and it would work in DS pretty well considering it fits the MKDS retro track style. GCN Bowser's Castle wouldn't work too well since it's similar to the DS version and it'd be the 3rd Bowser Castle in the game. I don't like the Bowser Castle spam in MKSC and SMK, we don't need it in DS as well.
Funnily enough, GBA Rainbow Road was a consideration lol. And yeah, I could’ve salvaged Yoshi Circuit if I wanted to, but alas, Daisy Cruiser popped in before I considered moving YC down
I was honestly thinking of making it SNES Rainbow Road, the last track of the first game. Additionally, I also thought of changing the GBA track to Bowser Castle 3, given the pattern of the last Star Cup track being the penultimate track of the Lightning Cup. It’s also an easy fix for future games; just swap BC3’s OG spot in Wii with Sky Garden, and continue the pattern with the following games (Wii is DK Mountain and N64 Rainbow Road, 7 is Airship Fortress and GBA Rainbow Road, and 8 is Grumble Volcano and GCN Rainbow Road)
If it was down to me, I would’ve just made every Mario Kart 64 course all the Retro Grand Prix courses in MKDS, identical to how Super Circuit remade all of Super Mario Kart’s tracks, but if I had to keep the game’s Retro GP format (SNES, N64, GBA, GCN) then I’d do it like this: SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Dry Dry Desert SNES Bowser Castle 1 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Boo Lake GCN Mario Circuit SNES Koopa Beach 1 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Yoshi Desert GCN Mushroom City SNES Vanilla Lake 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sky Garden GCN Wario Colosseum
Mario Kart DS really just suffers from coming at a time where there weren't enough games yet to justify four whole retro cups. Especially since more than half of the available retro courses at the time were flat maps of varying (usually poor) quality, along with the DS's limitations at the time nerfing all the double dash tracks to hell and back just to get them to fit into the cartridge, it's just really not possible to fill all 16 track slots with fair representation without including at least a few stinkers in the mix. MKDS, I love you, and you were my introduction into the MK franchise which I now play to death, but lets be real here, you kinda stink sometimes.
I gotta disagree with that last pick. GCN Bowser’s Castle is an absolute banger of a track, but it is far too similar to the DS version. Both are larger, more industrial-like Bowser Castle courses where you scale the inside of the castle-going higher up instead of simply around it. Instead, I’d easily go with (and without a doubt) Wario Colosseum. It’s the perfect pick: Huge, so it serves well for a finale, but not too ambitious with things that could overload the DS hardware, lots of twists and turns perfect for MKDS’s drifting mechanics, and of course, it’s length. Being the only course with a different lap count (as we are to remove Baby Park) would certainly make it memorable. Other than that, definitely agree with your picks, great video! 👍
Thanks for the input! I do recognize that GCN Bowser Castle is too similar to the DS version (what I also elaborated in the video), but it only feels a little fitting because it is the penultimate course before Rainbow Road. It might also be because Wii’s Lightning Cup also ends in a Bowser Castle so, I guess there’s that?
I'd honestly put bowsers castle right before sky garden. It would go from the dark nightmare to the drive Through a heavenly dream which is actually quite similar to the nitro courses going from bowsers castle to rainbow road.
I actually like the GBA BC2 music BECAUSE of how different it sounds, but I understand if it sounds too ear-grating for everyone else. I can't hear the main melody half the time.
Here are my choices. I'll take into account the DS's limited hardware and Nintendo's mindset at the time. Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup GCN Baby Park GBA Bowser Castle 2 N64 Frappe Snowland SNES Donut Plains 2 Leaf Cup SNES Koopa beach 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge Lightning Cup GCN Yoshi Circuit GBA Sky Garden N64 Bowser's Castle SNES Rainbow Road Did banana and lightning in reverse order so I could end out on a rainbow road. Changes aren't too drastic. They just add a little more variety.
Actually GBA Boo Lake from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass is one of my favorite GBA tracks in Mario Kart 8. The underwater and anti-gravity part are so good that it seems not from the GBA system.
Thanks for the shoutout! This is an interesting topic and it's a shame MKDS' retro track selection is as meh as it is. Personally, I think GCN Wario Colosseum would be the perfect track to end off the game, with how epic and ambitious it is.
9:02 ON GOD BRO, mkds was my first game too and if anyone played ds theyll know how GOD AWFUL choco island is.... the handling is super terrible and i barely got any first place due to how slippery it is
On paper having the retro cups be 4 tracks from each games and the tracks going in order of game in each cup is a interesting idea but was executed badly with how boring and bad most of the retros are due to DS’s limitations
Here's my personal choices (I would change MKW's too): SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Koopa Troopa Beach GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Royal Raceway GBA Sky Garden GCN Mushroom City SNES Vanilla Lake 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sunset Wilds GCN Rainbow Road I might comment my MKW fixes if anyone would be interested!
These are mine :) Snes Mario Circuit 1 n64 Moo Moo Farm Gba Shy Guy Beach Gcn Dry Dry Desert Gcn Mushroom Bridge Snes Donut Plains 1 Gba Cheese Land n64 Mario Raceway Gba Luigi Circuit Gcn Sherbet Land Snes Choco Island 2 n64 Bowser's Castle Gcn Yoshi Circuit Gba Sky Garden n64 Banshee Boardwalk Snes Rainbow Road
Fine concept, but you use a lot of words to say comparatively little. Cut out some of the fluff words like "plus", "necessarily", "after all", "well", etc. and the video will be more concise and more pleasing to listen to.
Here's mine since everyone else did it; Shell Cup: SNES: Mario Circuit 1 N64: Moo Moo Farm GBA: Riverside Park GCN: Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup: GCN: Mario Circuit GBA: Cheese Land N64: Choco Mountain SNES: Vanilla Lake 1 Leaf Cup: SNES: Donut Plains 3 N64: Royal Raceway GBA: Sunset Wilds GCN: Yoshi Circuit Lightning Cup: GCN: Wario Colloseum GBA: Broken Pier N64: Bowser Castle SNES: Rainbow Road These picks are cuckoo crazy, but these are what I would've liked.
Hot Take: Baby Park is only fun in double dash, in Ds its boring, in mario kart 8 its more frustrating than fun (especially online), im not saying its bad in 8, its plays well and looks amazing and The music is iconic but i groan whenever it comes up online.
Idea: Mario Kart World, using tracks from 8 Deluxe so far: Victory Screen: Mario Kart Stadium Mushroom Cup: 1: DS Mario Circuit 2: Toad Harbor 3: Wii Mushroom Gorge 4: 3DS Pirahna Plant Slide Flower Cup: 1: DS Wario Stadium 2: Twisted Mansion 3: Tour Yoshi's Island 4: ...Paris Promenade? We don't have a Daisy track yet... Star Cup: 1: DS Tick Tock Clock 2: Sunshine Airport 3: Wii Maple Treeway 4: Tour London Loop Special Cup: 1: DS Waluigi Pinball 2: N64 Kalimari Desert 3: Shy Guy Falls 4: N64 Rainbow Road Shell Cup: 1: Tour Tokyo Blur 2: Cloudtop Cruise 3: Wii Grumble Volcano 4: Bowser's Castle Banana Cup: 1: 3DS DK Jungle 2: Thwomp Ruins 3: GCN Sherbet Land 4: Tour New York Minute Leaf Cup: 1: Super Bell Subway 2: SNES Mario Circuit 3: Bone Dry Dunes 4: 3DS Music Park Lightning Cup: 1: Mario Kart Stadium 2: 3DS Toad Circuit (placeholder for Toad Factory) 3: Electrodrome 4: Rainbow Road
To be fair The retro track in ghis game were more of an extra then a nessesity Considering it was likely added do to complaints that double dash lacked content
this is such a great video can’t believe you haven’t reached that much attention! come to think of it mario kart wiis retro selection isn’t the greatest either think you can fix that?
9:29 I actually played some Ermii Kart DS not that long ago actually. The Vanilla Lake 1 remake they did on there is also phenomenal, I must agree with you on that.
Honestly, I say the main reason why ds didn't have good retro tracks is because they didn't have too much to work with. They only had 4 games to go off, and even then, they couldn't really use Double Dash's courses because of software limitations. Compared to 7-8 who had more games to work with, I'd say it's pretty forgivable that DS doesn't have great retro courses.
I don’t mind Chocolate Island that much since it’s based off of a late game area in Super Mario World, which does seem like a good pick for the final retro cup.
@@GoldenDryBonesandStu, honestly, it would have worked better in Wii, 7, and 8, since tricks were added in those games, and if Choco Island 2 did return in Wii, I’d have it as the replacement for Mario Circuit 3, or even, making it appear as the third course in the Lightning Cup in 7, replacing Rainbow Road, and putting DS Airship Fortress as the final retro course, and last, but not least, if it appeared in the Booster Course Pass, I would have kicked Mario Circuit 3 out and had this instead, alongside Vanilla Lake in Wave 5. So yeah, that’s my personal opinion on where Choco Island should have been. I actually played the Choco Island tracks on Wii via Rom Hacks, and I enjoyed them there since you get to do tricks off the bumps, and it’s not as slippery like earlier games. Anyways, thanks for reading! 👋
Dry Dry Desert and Bowser's Castle fit the last-track-of-the-cup vibe perfectly (although I think DDD was pretty obvious in that regard). Also I think the addition of Koopa Troopa Beach was a good addition.
In my opinion I’d take DS retro tracks all the 8 ones any day (excluding the booster course pass) just like I’d take Wiis battle mode over 8s or 8DXs any day.
Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Koopa Troopa Beach GBA Peach Circuit GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup SNES Donut Plain 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Cheese Land GCN Baby Park Leaf Cup SNES Koopa Troopa Beach 2 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Daisy Cruiser Lightning Cup SNES Choco Island 2 N64 Yoshi Valley GBA Sky Garden GCN Bowser Castle
For the banana cup I would have used one of the city tracks from GCN instead of Daisy Cruiser because Daisy Cruiser is in MK7 But honestly speaking, you did a very good job.
Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 GBA Shy Guy Beach N64 Koopa Troopa Beach GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup GCN Mario Circuit N64 Frappe Snowland SNES Koopa Beach 1 GBA Bowser Castle 2 Leaf Cup GBA Luigi Circuit SNES Vanilla Lake 1 N64 DK's Jungle Parkway GCN Yoshi Circuit Lightning Cup GCN DK Mountain GBA Sky Garden N64 Banshee Boardwalk SNES Rainbow Road
Here’s my take She’ll Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Baby Park Banana Cup: SNES Donut Plains 1 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Sky Garden GCN Yoshi Circuit Lightening Cup: SNES Choco Island 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Bowser Castle 4 GCN Rainbow Road
The leaf cup is underwhelming imo it should be like a star cup and it’s not even close to that I would replace choco mountain with dk jungle parkway gba Luigi circuit for sunset wilds and mushroom bridge for dd jungle
Oh, wow! A Mario Kart video I actually agree with that talks about the retro tracks, makes well-thought out replacements, and does it all without unnecessarily shitting on the SNES Mario Kart and its tracks! I appreciate your content, good sir. You have earned a like and a subscribe from me.
I wouldn’t say those placements were well thought out, but for the most part, I think they were good enough. I have a slight soft spot for (some of) the SNES tracks, more than most people lol
My choices would be: Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 (all SNES courses will now be 5 laps) N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach Banana Cup: SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup: SNES Vanilla Lake 1 N64 Royal Raceway GBA Sunset Wilds GCN DK Mountain Lightning Cup SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sky Garden GCN Bowser's Castle
Here's my fix: Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach Banana Cup SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Boo Lake GCN Waluigi Stadium Leaf Cup SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Sunset Wilds GCN Mario Circuit Lightning Cup SNES Ghost Valley 3 N64 Yoshi Valley GBA Bowser Castle 4 GCN Rainbow Road
Interesting choices here are mine: Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1- Except keep this and all the other SNES remakes 5 laps N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach Banana Cup: SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit- This fits the banana cup better than the leaf cup in my opinion GCN Mushroom Bridge- Again, it makes more sense for the banana cup. Make it so you can at least actually drive on the bridge this time. Leaf Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 1- I feel like most people prefer this to Koopa Beach 2 and for good reasons N64 Choco Mountain GBA Sky Garden- Again, it fits the leaf cup better GCN Yoshi Circuit- Same as Sky Garden but also keep the tunnel shortcut and Yoshicopter Lightning Cup: SNES Vanilla Lake 1- I mean I guess this makes sense N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Lakeside Park GCN Dino Dino Jungle
I think Peach Beach in Shell Cup would fit better GCN Mario Circuit in Flower Cup, because their obstacles wouldn’t be a problem for the game, they can be easily done in Mario Kart DS! And maybe Mushroom City instead of Mushroom Bridge, because the bridge is too easy in Mario Kart DS, because it’s a slower game and DinoDino-Jungle in the Lightning Cup! The problem of the GameCube-tracks are not only the obstacles, also the speed and this two track would be really nice, because they are long and their obstacles should can be made!
Back then no Rainbow Road occupied the Lightning Cup. 7 introduced the idea and it stuck to this day. Nowadays, yeah I can see how it feels a little odd not to have a Rainbow Road
Here Is My Selection: Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach Banana Cup: SNES Choco Island 1 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Boo Lake GCN Waluigi Stadium Leaf Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Mario Raceway GBA Sky Garden GCN Yoshi Circuit Lightning Cup: SNES Vanilla Lake 1 N64 DK Jungle Parkway GBA Bowser Castle 3 GCN Wario Colosseum
Honesty, I'd replace choco island 2 with Yoshi Circuit and make Gba Sky garden the last track in the lightening cup I do like the idea of vanilla lake 1 being in the lightening cup but I'd like it better if it comes after Yoshi circuit and banshee boardwalk. Overall, good list :)
I had a similar idea... Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Koopa Troopa Beach GBA Riverside Park GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Bowser's Castle 2 GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Mario Raceway GBA Ribbon Road GCN Bowser's Castle Lightning Cup SNES Choco Island 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sky Garden GCN Wario Colosseum
I mean, Personally I didn’t really care that much on the track selection. It makes the game unique and always having the best tracks all the time wouldn’t give us a breath of fresh air. That Snow Man one though Kept On Pissing Me Off.
Golden I have a my ideas for the cups shell cup I would do this snes Mario circut 1 n64 Luigi raceway gba shy guy beach gcn Mario circut second one I’ll add snes chocolate island one n64 toads turn pike gba snow land gcn gcn mushroom city leaf cup normal thunder gcn I would replace with waluigi stadium and snes will be Mario circut 4
Onpopiler opinon, i like choco Island 2, the Sound track is amzing and whatever you Call that you are driveing in too Me loks like Carrey its so delcus
mfw i’m considered a mario kart channel: 😦 In all seriousness, Thank you. It’s always interesting to see different opinions on things that interest me, no matter how much I tend to disagree with some or even agree to an extent
Imo I would actually replace mushroom bridge with mushroom city since I prefer it over bridge, we basically already have a mushroom bridge replacement in ds that is mushroom ridge.
The retro course selections in DS were a bit meh not bad per say compared to the Mario karts that came after DS. I basically agree with most of your picks, something to note is that the shells cup order in DS is pretty weird 3 of the 4 tracks are the first tracks in their respective MKs e.g SNES Mario Circuit 1, GBA Peach Circuit and GCN Luigi Circuit. whereas Moo Moo Farm is the 2nd track in MK64 they could’ve picked Luigi Raceway if they wanted to make the shell cup an all first track cup
UPDATE: I ended up actually playing it all. Upset for vanilla lake, because it isn’t in ctgp yet. So I played choco mountain 2 instead. But all in all, I played the whole selection and it was a really strong lineup 😎
Ngl I'm happy you kept mushroom bridge as a track I didn't reliase the shortcuts were missing as a kid but after watching the game for so long I saw it was missing and felt a bit ripped of
For my version of Mario Kart DS Retro Tracks Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup: SNES Donut Plains 1 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Sky Garden GCN Yoshi Circuit Lightning Cup: SNES Choco Island 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Bowser's Castle 3 GCN Rainbow Road
