Unfortunately, my 2008 Porsche Cayman continues to experience a bunch of mechanical issues, so today's challenge is to restore this car to excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition! We'll go through everything that I needed to do to keep the car running and looking great (it's a lot...)

Hi Luke, I’m an exPorsche technician. The exhaust system holds a lot of fumes following an air-oil separator failure. Give the car a good run and it will clear the exhaust out. All the interior niggles are well known Cayman issues with the mileage that you have

Having owned a wide variety of Porsche models throughout the past 35+ years I feel confident to say that Porsches are highly reliable vehicles for as long as you're able to throw tons of money at an< poiblem that could possibly - and therefore will - occurr. It is what it is! The purchase price is always the minor issue. Maintenenance and repairs make the difference! Owning a Porsche doesn't take much. Keeping it in usable condition does!

Luke, you kinda forgot to factor in the lawyers costs on how much this car was for you… you’re on some $26000 + elbow grease + lawyering up to get everything straight. As the owner of the cheapest porsche cayman (non s) in the country I empathize with your struggle. These cars, especially pre-2009 are a unique bag of potential gremlins that have to be really well researched and understood before your decide to get into one. The biggest fear for me was bore scoring and IMS bearing damage, but I paid extra to have the oil changed and we cut open the filter looking for particulate as well as pulling down the oil pan. Then snaked a camera into the cylinders. Luckily it came back clean in that regard but I have had to quite a few of the same fixes.

@PyroDenny
@PyroDenny Год назад
@@ericlecours4208 pretty mild, when i got the car it had a split CV boot on the right rear, a replacement axle was $900 and took maybe an hour and a half to replace. That was the major fix everything else has been small easy items. These are race cars and porsche built them to be worked on quickly so most things that break are pretty trivial to fix compared to just about any other post 2000 sports car. Most annoying fix was the wiper fluid reservoir replacement because I had to take the drivers side front fender off. That said i do need to replace the head liner next because this was a car made in the mid 2000's so the foam is completely failed and that will be a tricky one without taking the front window out.

I bought my new AOS direct from a Porsche dealer (US) because it was less than the online parts places. It was a dealer selling online at wholesale prices. OEM is ok too, remember that Porsche did not make most of these parts, their suppliers did.

You polish in the dollars - hit the ext with claybar and wax. Will look as good as your int. Good job on the MAF DIY. If the AOS was really bad, you'll get a lot of oiling internally. Quite possible you’re looking at cylinder bore scoring as others have said. Typical symptoms are smoke from exhaust and increasing oil usage. Keep track of the amount of oil the car is using, and look to have a bore scope inspection carried out.

I’ve fallen down the Porsche lore rabbit hole the last few weeks… and between this guy and Joe talks cars (who actually got his engine rebuilt because of bore scoring) I am nearly positive I’ll be going with a 978.1 BASE. So far I haven’t seen any reports of bore scoring on the smaller engine. It’s starting to seem like the bore scoring really is that widespread and an obvious design/manufacturing flaw for Porsche.

Where to begin? First, don’t let the internet trolls convince you that the smoke you have is from “bore scoring”. The AOS deposited oil in every nook and cranny of the intake. Give it time. You can rule out bore scoring by driving it and keeping an eye on the oil level. Bore score will cause the engine to consume the oil. If all you get is smoke, it’s a matter of getting the intake cleaned up. You rip Mac’s apart for RU-vid. You would find an AOS replacement, while fiddly, much easier than pulling the screen off a 2011 iMac. Don’t spend that kind of money for that sort of thing again. Your car is not quite done. I recommend new coil packs and plugs at that mileage. New air filters. New serpentine belt. Bleed the brakes and perhaps do pads. And maybe a water pump. These are mostly easy DIY jobs. All of that said, nice car. A good buy. But man, it pains me to see that bill for the work that was done. 10 hours of cleaning should result in a bit less smoke too.

The differences between a 987.1 and 987.2 are pretty substantial. The .2 got DFI, elimination of the IMS, and introduced the PDK. It’s the sweet spot of Porsche Caymans for me. But I don’t think the updates justify the price difference between a .1 and .2

I don’t have a garage and just use a hydraulic jack and axle stands. You can access pretty much everything either from the top, underneath or from the access panels behind the seats. The drive belt is accessed via removable panels behind the seats, spark plugs and coil packs from the wheel arches, and engine air filter and AOS from the top. Compared to many front engined cars, I would say that access is much easier.

Try to find a friend who knows a bit about cars and talk to them before committing to any big repair bills in the future, and keep that scan tool on hand at all times.
