Today's video is all about improving my discus release angle. For as long as I can remember my throws have been flat and now that things are starting to feel more consistent technically I want to start making the change to improve my release angle. going to take a lot of quality reps but im excited for the change.

Thanks for these videos man. They are really helping me find useful cues to improve positions. I competed as a decathlete back in 2004-2009 and really never progressed my technique. I could never control a full spin and used to throw off a half turn. I managed to throw 46m that way. Now, at 36yrs old I'm getting into Masters Throwing and really trying to learn proper technique. I'm nowhere near your distances, but the goal is 45m by next year. Always found it tough at 6-foot to really thrive in disc as it always seemed like the taller bigger guys gained so much with their leverage and weight. Technique will be key for me. I"m naturally very explosive and am finding that my jumping abilities really translated well into throws! Anyway, thanks so much! Where in Canada are you?

Jordan, I hope I can help. Just this year I added height to my throw. I thought this would never happen because I am over forty years old and I have arthritis from years of javelin throwing. But I did it by engaging my arm at the back of the ring with my hand elevated above my shoulder level. You are being really aware of your arm position right now. So this will work well with what you are doing. I recommend setting your throwing arm higher at the beginning and actively keeping it up and engaged throughout the rotation. This will cause you to raise it as you enter single support in the center of the ring and allow you to set a more dynamic orbit.

I saw when i started throwing a bit harder moving my shoulder up some at the end of the throw helped me get tons of height and explosiveness. Not sure if that'll help you or not. Nice video by the way dude; glad you're back to dropping knowledge on us.

so for me it was more of a last second up rather than changing the beginning of the throw. My beginning and out the back was the same, just at the very end is when i started moving my should and arm higher

Darrny H. Interesting, for myself when I try to do things on only the finish it tends to mess up the flight. Most of my problems throwing can be traced back to the start of the throw so I prefer to try and find the root of the problem rather than throw on a technical band aid. May be worth a shot to try to get some more height on the finish though, good looks.

I'm sorry to question your advice, I want to go over the small point you made about keeping the discus and arm back too far? I learned from day one you want good torso stretch and to stay back as long as possible so when the feet run through the middle, the upper body acceleration is maximized by staying as back as long as we can .

Yeah, theoretically keeping the arm back as far as possible would give you more time to accelerate the implement. And with a light discus and being strong it’s possible to pull off I found with the 2k discus and my strength levels it was more beneficial to sacrifice some length in the entry and on the finish to put myself in better positions for the release angle because that helped me throw farther than leaving the discus too far behind and not being able to finish the discus at a good angle.

Go to sleep at 9:30 PM, so you fall asleep before 10 PM, wake up at 6- 7AM, EVERYDAY. Sleep is most important. Avoid ALL artificial lights 1- 2 hours before sunset till sunrise. Eat enough animal source whole food protein(whole eggs, raw milk, meat, fish). Focus on bench press and trap bar deadlift.

Razaq Uddin the best advice in my opinion is that there is no short cuts. If you want to be great then you need to start throwing and lifting and do everything you can to stay healthy and not stop. It will take around 10 years to get strong and have good technique.

Great video's.... but your right arm might as well be painted on. When you activate it, the discus will go

Paul Wadsworth yeah, maybe some day I’ll utilize it more. Such a bad habit that’s stuck around from when I began throwing

@@LifeofJY coaching the kids here in NZ I talk a lot about the non throwing arm as it helps with balance, pull and positioning.... they just want to rip the throwing arm, but really the throwing arm is the vessel of delivery. Keep up the good work mate been following you for a while as I have a young leftie disc and shot kid and you have been huge help for us both. I caught up with the Canadian girls in Christchurch at Nats.... sorry I missed you

You may want to address shortening your movement across the ring a bit. You fouled on every throw.

Haha Fouling with my feet isn’t a problem in competition, this was just practice that I was focused on other things and not worried about even putting my feet at the back of the ring since it’s just a painted circle. Funny though to tell a 10x all American how staying in the ring works
