I think the biggest problem with flag redesigns is that they are too simple. The restrictions that people make because of the vexilogical society stuff creates basic and usually ugly flags. I’d rather a bunch of sheets and seals than basic shapes A great example of this is minnesotas redesign. They jumped the gun on the redesign and imo chose a pretty poor flag that doesn’t represent the state, when they could’ve come up with something much better if it wasn’t confined to specific rules. Mississippi is an example of a redesign done right, kept it fairly simple but took some liberties to add some complex features
For those who wonder why a bunch of US states have the same blue background + state seal set-up: apparently this was a wider historical movement which felt that it was "disrespectful" to the national flag if state flags had their own designs, and that they should be less original and interesting in a sign of subservience to the federal flag. Some states actually abandoned good flags for the modern seals as a result. Sure, makes sense in a country that just had a civil war with an excuse about "states' rights" and independence of states vs. the federal government, but damn did it damage the aesthetics.
And why blue? It's because many of the loyal union troops who fought in the Civil War had blue regimental flags. So next time you want to redesign a flag do some history before you say "seal on bedsheet"
"Let's just make New York, Dutch" is not a satisfying or creative fix my man. If you're gonna do a "redesign" you need to actually put in some effort 👍

@@TheMrPeteChannel The heraldry of New Jersey isn't very good tbh, too many colours and too many details, and slapping the whole heraldic achievement on a flag is bit tacky and pompous. Better heraldic flag design would be to just have the New Jersey coat of arms on the flag, the three plows on a blue field.

@@Luigisuperx You would be surprised as the majority of the almost 200 national flags out there follow the simple design guidlines I pointed out. As well as many concept flags I have seen.
@@Luigisuperx That's why I said the majority, not all. And in my original comment I said should, instead of every. Now a coat of arms doesn't automatically fail to meet good flag design, it depends how simple of a design it is. But I don't recall seeing one that didn't have animals or other complicated design elements in them. This of course is all my opinion. You have the right to disagree, but I will continue defend my position.
