The Know-Nothings of the 1800s and the nativist cranks of the 1900s, who were pushing the hardest for the anti-immigration policies that Pax Tube (a self-identified Catholic) is now advocating, were motivated in large part by anti-Catholic hysteria because Catholic immigrants were supposedly about to replace White Protestants and/or become a Fifth Column for the Vatican. What’s even funnier about this is that back in the 1800s/early 1900s - what Pax Tube is unironically referring to as “the good old days” - Irish and Italians weren’t even considered “white.” Cartoons back then compared them to Africans, or even apes. The WASPs literally considered them to be another “race,” and second-class to Northern Europeans (Anglo-Germans, Scandinavians, etc.), aka the “real” white people. This was the time when the d-word (it rhymes with “hey, go,” for the blissfully ignorant) was used as a racial slur against Italian immigrants. It wasn’t until several generations had passed that Irish and Italian people were seen as “white” and welcomed into the club, so to speak. Short version: if Pax Tube time-traveled back to 1880-something and hopped off the boat in New York harbor, ready to live out his fantasy of white utopia, he’d be bullied, harassed, vilified, physically assaulted, denied services, persecuted by governmental authorities, and excluded from social functions on account of his religion and his ethnicity.

During the 1800s, and especially during World War I, my ancestors had to put up with their own fair share of bigotry, xenophobia, and hysteria because they often were seen as “hyphenated Americans,” or even traitors. The heartbreaking cycle in American history is that each new generation of immigrants endures this kind of prejudice - but instead of remembering this history to inspire sympathy and compassion for those trying to find a better life in America today, so many of us tend to either forget such history, or distort it beyond recognition (like this idiot, Pax Tube) to excuse present-day bigotry.
