Haters beware! In this episode, we figure out what had been causing our '73 chopper to smoke so much and fire it up again. It may not be the fix you had been anticipating... Instagram: / kingpin_garage
A manual would have told you that. BTW...it's called sumping (when the crankcase fills with oil after sitting for awhile). All the older big twins do it, and some Sportsters too, and it's an easy fix. It's the check ball and oil screen in the oil pump. There's a big screw right on top of the oil pump where you can access it. A piece of grit or something got in there and that's what causes the sumping. My Shovel quit doing the sumping thing the first time I cleaned the check ball screen. Also keep that breather hose AWAY from the rear tire, for obvious reasons. A well known exhaust trick is to double up the exhaust gaskets and use blue loctite on the single bolt. The single bolt system sucks and they like to loosen up after a bit. Once it warms up that oil pressure will drop off to nothing, which is normal because they run on volume, not pressure. Get that front end figured out and RIDE THAT SUCKER!
@@stevem5139 exactly my thought. That rear exhaust port is probably stripped out that’s why he gummed it all up with the silicone. Definitely poor design with the single bolt I’m putting S&S heads on my shovel right now and looking forward to not tightening my pipes every time I leave the house
I ran my breather hose up to a fitting I made in the top of the central vertical frame tube and fitted a filter to the bottom of that tube and a screw cap on the opening of the bottom of the tube that catches all the oil from the breather turning the tube into an oil catch can and you just unscrew the bottom cap to drain the oil off. It works real well and solves the messy breather problems.
I use the woven evolution exhaust gaskets on my 78 shovelhead flh, you have to take your time and stretch them around the exhaust, but I have not had a exhaust leak since I put them on 10 years ago. And I also had a serious sumping problem with mine, I removed the check ball and spring in the oil pump and cleaned it out with a bore mop from my gun cleaning kit, then put old check ball back in an used a Teflon punch and brass hammer to lightly tap and seat the check ball, ( removed it with a thin magnet) put in the new check ball and spring, oil sumping problem went away. I do this every other oil change.
You guys seriously need more subs this channel easily beats any other motorcycle channel or chopper channel I've seen yet. Its like hidden gold. Your old man knows his shit and youre well on your way. Can't wait to see the bike buttoned up
Every time I see your videos pop up its the first one I click I have a 79 Ironhead Sportster and I try to learn everything I can about old harleys and even older Harleys
@@gunnarbates942 We built a 79 Sportster in 1994. Sold it to someone in Austrailia. That's a one year only bike and every part is specific to that bike. Keep that thing runnin and stay safe!
Had a '87 Softail that was just a monthly pain in the ass. Literally, it would run great for 3 weeks, then something tiny and stupid would break, wear out, or fall off! My wife said one day, that I spend more in a month, what a new bike payment would cost...... ....the following Saturday, I brought home the brand new Dyna :)
Nice job kicking the bike young man. I've got 72 fly I kicked it one am. And it though me over handlebars. Since then I'm kinda careful when I do it. Took month for the arch of foot to heal. Have great day guys p,a I'm 2nd owner of the 72 got it when I was 25 now 55/still riding. But going to get newer as well as pan an knuckle it's only money when my bike was built I was in 2nd grade lol
@@KingpinGarage hey guys I take it we may have things in common so you antiquing too. LOL I really wish these kids would start fighting again. Winner buys the beer. Instead killing each other. Or hit turn the piece upright hit you target not my niebor. I'm glad I'm not so scared of walking out front door without gun. But some of my boys an their woman insist on it. Have great life
I just found your channel and I'm glad I did. I want to be a harley mechanic as well any advice? I am currently an auto mechanic bu trade but I want to switch over to bikes.
Since you’re already a mechanic, you’re more than qualified for the job. My advice would be to go and buy an inexpensive Harley and fix it up. It’s the best way to learn. Also, say goodbye to your metric set of tools for a while ;)
Had a shovelhead come in the shop smoking like that one, whoever's built it didn't understand oiling of a shove at all. First of all breather plug blocked thought that would be the end of it. Nope still smoking like a train compression test was 110 each cylinder. Leak down test all good, cylinders look good with bore scope? So I said maybe oil pump not drilled for newer style pump nope, then maybe after market lifter blocks clogged or partially clogged, Nope, pulled front head off and at least 1.5 quarts of oil drained out. Long story short, somebody build a stroke and did not machine the case for oil returns from top end.
Crankcase breather. The downward motion of the pistons builds up pressure in the crankcase, and it's gotta have somewhere to go. If excess oil was building up in the crankcase, the check ball valve spring on the oil pump is probably weak. The previous owner probably siliconed everything because oil was probably seeping or squirting from every orifice.
Your right brother but that setup was made to fit under the cover or used with a support plate instead. Someone thought since it’s kick it should stay off but its a bad bad idea
One of the main factors for the oil dumping on a bottom breathing motors is the height of the breather hose. If it loops up high and then comes back down there’s less of a chance of it shooting tons of oil out. There are tons of other methods to not have it spray oil out. We’ve seen breathers plumbed right into the oil bag with a special breathing cap.
AND YOU ARE THE FIRST THAT KICK START THE BIKE RIGHT WITH THE OTHER FOOT ON THE GROUND. YOU CAN SEE BIG GUYS KICK START THE BIKE JUMPING LIKE A LITTLE GIRLS
I always look at it this way. I always laugh when I hear someone say "oh that guy kick starts his bike the right way", did the bike start? then you did it right. who cares how someone else starts their bike? LOL.... some of the High Compression Stroker motors take a little more lead in your ass, than a stock 80.
agreed. we had a 93” S&S shovel in the shop one time that we had to literally throw ourselves at. very different when compared to a stock one we had where I started it by hand lol
Having no filter on the breather hose in a Dusty condition particle go into the oil equal clogger the system possibility a lot of slogan in the bottom of the crankcase
it has a scavenger oil pump there is a plug with spring and a little ball under it if the spring or ball is worn out it will puke oil out the breather tube the guy had blocked off probably why he blocked it off
Put the one-way flow check valve into the breeder only to go out do not need to pull back the air from the outside it reduce or laminate oil leakage or should I say oil misting
Hugh Jorden is right but also the breather hose was to run into the air cleaner but if the bike wet-sump it would spit the oil into the air cleaner so everybody just cut the hose, you can buy a filter for it and run the hose so it sweeps up higher and that stops the puddle of oil on the ground when it wet sumps.
Yes I would be scared to ride one with an open one. I saw a vid someplace where the bike builder put about 5 or 6 chains on it instead of a belt and after his test drive his jeans were shredded from flapping in the wind against it. Crazy
@Al Gottsch Al: Back in the early 70's a buddy of mine was riding his Triumph Bonneville 650, he was wearing bell bottoms and went to put his one of his feet down coming to a stop. The bell bottom "bell" caught a bolt so he pushed his leg as hard as he could ripping out his pant legs but didn't drop his bike. -'lil stan
Those brand new sparkling gaskets will leak. I used gaskets from the automotive world, cheaper and much better. You will route the breather hose so that it will not get oil vaper on your tire. Get it blowing on your chain. Engine sounds great though.
If the guy didn't know that a shovelhead will puke oul out of that backpressure overflow he could have just plugged it off because he thought it was just leaking oil and thought that was what he needed to do, who knows because you sure cant ask him now why he did it.
Correct. The main reason motorcycles got that name is actual due to its latin roots. “Motus” in latin is to set in motion, and motors are implements to create motion. Then you pair that with a cycle, and voilà the motorcycle.
You obviously never spent hundreds of dollars on an exhaust that was not build correctly and does not fit or seal, and your only recourse is to use the gasket sealer to get the bike back on the road...
THOSE ONE BOLT FLANGES are GARBAGE, ALWAYS ISSUES. 2 BOLT is the WAY to GO. I HAVE SEEN SHOVELHEAD FLANGES MODIFIED TO TWO BOLTS. SUCH a SIMPLE ISSUE CAN CREATE SO MANY DAMN PROBLEMS
