Check out this Awesome New Battery Operated Toy I got to fix track joints with.
My new Ingersoll Rand 1 inch impact wrench made specially for heavy
duty application. Batteries are 20 volt lithium ion. Wrench is Model W9491-K4E.
It weighs in at 40 pounds. Sales literature says it can develop up to 3,000 foot
pounds of loosening torque and up to 2,200 of tightening torque.
After using it for a couple of months now, I do find that figure hard
to believe, but it does a perfect job for our track bolts. And is so
handy to have because of it's portability. A really nice railroad tool.

We in Germany, thank God, do not yet use any superstructure materials from China. And the 4 locomotives that the Deutsche Bahn AG had ordered for the S-Bahn in Berlin and Hamburg in China are still not running properly. And as long as the machines do not run properly, there is no approval from the Federal Railway Authority. My opinion is: Who buys in China, buys cheap but at least 2 times. Thank you Dave for this Video. And have a good time with your new toy. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven

I also watched the video of 22's engine parts, but then a commercial got in the way before I could thumbs-up it and comment on it. So now I get to put my thoughts down on both of these videos at the same time. I love seeing the crews, the locomotives and the cars all at work. But it is all this other behind the scenes stuff that is so very important as well. If the rocker arm fails, the engine loses power. When the engine loses power the locomotives cannot move the cars. If the cars don't move, neither does the cargo that is in them. When the cargo stops, so does the money. If a bolt fails and the track comes apart, the trains stop, as does the cargo and the money. And when this happens to often, Dave gets to look for a new job. And we don't get any more videos. So yes even these seemingly little things are important. Thanks Dave and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

After almost 18 years on the railroad, I never thought I'd be carrying a cordless impact in my truck. But we picked up a round of the Milwaukee 1" HD impacts. Very impressive. I spent the better part of last year as an Assistant Roadmaster on 125 miles of 100# jointed track before moving back down the same position on my home subdivision. Average patrol in the spring (25ish miles each day) I was putting in between 4-7 kegs (23 bolts per keg). One 12aH battery would do roughly 30-40 bolts. Great investement!!!

Ingersoll rand makes top quality tools. When i first started working for Bethlehem Steel i worked in the Frog and Switch labor gang i helped with building frogs once in awhile. Ingersoll Rand was the air gun they used to tighten the frog bolts. They used bolts made at the Lebanon Pa. Bethlehem plant. Those bolts were hard good quality. That plant closed years ago. That brought back memories when you ran this video. Thumbs up on the video.

@@ccrx6700 It would seem that over time, with the expansion and contraction of the rails and the heavy hammering of the weight of the train the bolts would undergo kind of a "cold forging" effect and indeed become distorted. Is it true that the rails get harder and harder due to the wheels compressing the molecules and eventually overburdened, and get brittle and break apart...? seems like that could happen to bolts too. ?

They were replacing all of the trackwork that was installed in the 1940’s and someone found out that there was Chinese bolts there and wanted them gone. Noticed in both computers and aftermarket auto parts the quality from country to country varies, sometimes wildly. Heard many people say, and have a little experience myself, that you can get good quality parts from China but you have wade through all the trash first and really specify that you do want to pay for the better quality. Couple years ago I got 4 shocks 2 from Mexico, 1 from China and 1 from Japan. The Japan one was impressive quality, no complaints on the ones from Mexico and the one from China had paint coming off, was covered in oil and the packaging was torn all up. Same time my drums were made in China and the quality is amazing. Only thing i really learned from all of this is to check the return policy before I buy stuff.

Yes, the crew worked while the rail was hot. What a magnificent job they did. The site is a 10 minute walk from my house. Had a chance to speak with the foreman in charge. He remembered me from the MOW cranes and Sperry Car, Loram grinder, as well as other conductor assignments. That was my bus man's holiday. Glad to hear you got a lot of rail work done. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family.

Your new toy is great. I never saw a battery powered one a lot better than the gas engine ones we had. I am sure your steel is a lot better. We used our own mostly and that was good. The Chinese make things cheap which I always think in the end costs more because it does not last so always works out better to buy the best. Some of our tools were made in US and they were good quality. Sadly like our coal mines most of our steel works are also no more because they said it was cheaper to import. We got some rail from Rumania and it wore out or broke in no time so that's one thing we still use our own steel mill for. I think there is only one place left making rail now.
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 Год назад
Thanks cedarcam for sharing your thoughts with us. Like Sven from Germany said, you will buy cheap from China, but you will also buy twice, just as you have said. We learned how to make steel from you guys back in the 1800's. British steel at that time was considered the best in the world. I remember reading about Andrew Carnegie going over there and learning how to make steel better. We only have 3 mills left in US that still roll rails. Several western RR's import rails from China and Japan. Always is a pleasure to have you pay us a visit my friend.

@@ccrx6700 You must of been impressed with the quality of some kind of special steel we made in Sheffield It was used in the Eagle and shuttle. I may be wrong for the reason it was used on these space craft but some steel we made was used in space because it was very pure. It was made from steel recovered from the sunken battle ships in Scapa flow Scotland, when these ships were built there was very little pollution in the atmosphere. Steel made today is less pure because of those impurities which get into the steel during smelting. I bet we do not even make that pure steel anymore, It makes me sad when I go to Sheffield and pass where all the steel works and rail yards used to be. I am surprised even you only have 3 mills left as you have the most track milage in the world.

Hey Dave, that my friend is real nice like💪🏽 the pro's with the battery powered impacts is no hydraulic hoses to drag around, quiter and lighter, the cons are it struggles removing the nuts after the fact the nuts and threads gets mangled by the tamper, frog bolts are normally harder to remove than the regular track bolts due to a thread lock incorporated into the frog bolt nut that we use on the BNSF mainline frogs, so don't get rid of the Stanley impact.

Good to see you also Kurtzbradley. Yes we used a hydraulic impact gun ran off my hi rail truck hydraulics before. This is so much nicer although it doesn't have quite the power that hydraulic wrench has. It's really nice because I don't have to fool with hydraulic hoses and can also easily transfer it to go with me when I take my small hi rail truck which doesn't have hydraulics on it. That is real nice to be able to do that. Absence of either of the above and you have to use a big track wrench manually which takes forever. You are so right, this wrench is a big time saver. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to visit with us and check out the video.

I been wondering this for so long walking past an old railway track inside the forest and be counting every bolt and nuts and see them as square. Gotta be a pain back in the day with long leverage bar and tighten by hand. Hundreds, if not thousands, of them. Still, with a tool, it's has to be somewhat nice feeling om ya back at the end of a day like this. I know it atleast from farming, but that is quite a different from this hard work. For a bolt to be a specific grade, it has to be within a specific tolerance. Yes, I think we should buy American if possible, but a grade 5 bolt on the softer side of the specification isn't inferior to a grade 5 bolt on the harder side of the same specification, because there isn't that much of a difference. (The old ones might be work hardened, making them harder, but also more brittle.)

@@ccrx6700 Yes, hardware store bolts are suspicious! But there is a "Fastener Quality Act" that requires fasteners with stamped grades to be tested and certified, and it applies to domestic and imported products. It's been on the books since 1990. (I just found this out now!)

Another nice video, you're just like a kid in the candy store showing off your new toy - she is a big impact wrench with high torque loads. Progress makes some good stuff but pricey - remember trying to buy some of their reflected tape when in the military to use as arc markers on ranges, then found out their owned by Cat so it explained the price. Hope you have a good rest to your week and get everything done before the snow hits for the winter, here it is already on the ground. Cheers and stay safe

Thank you very much Pete for the awesome comment. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and write in today my friend. yep Progress is owned by Cat. After Progress got EMD, Cat wanted to buy them to put Cat engines in the locos. Progress Rail is who made our hot wheel detector also. Cat equipment is good but like you said, parts are very expensive. Really appreciate your watching today and hope to see ya on the next one my friend. 29 degrees this morning with a light dusting of snow for us.
