First start of our 1987 Toyota FJ62 with a Cummins R2.8 and 6L80E transmission. Lots of detail work to finish but wanted to share this big milepost in our project.

Appreciate that. I'll get a video driving around soon. The turbo noises it makes are a good sound as well!

This is awesome, can't wait to see it completed. and whats with the Cummins-Dodge-Chevy comment at 1:52~
2 года назад
I'm just referring to the transmission controller. The transmission is a 6L80E (probably from a corvette or other 2wd v8 model) and wants to talk to a Chevy ECM or controller, but the engine and everything is Cummins (Dodge). Therefore Zero Gravity provides a transmission controller that talks to the Chevy transmission and the Cummins engine.

Nice build - have you had it out and about yet? I did the same build, and same electric fan. I had to change it out for more CFM - I think the Seal was about 1850 and I moved to a dual high output electric fan that gives about 3700CFM. I also have the same transmission and controller- that acts up once in a while but corrects if I just tap it :D
2 года назад
I haven’t driven it around yet. Still tucking up all the wires and lines. Which thermo switch setting did you pick for the Spal? Where did you tap into the CAN-Bus for the transmission?
@gogop66
@gogop66 2 года назад
@- Now that you mention it I don't remember where I tapped it if I did at all? I know that's not much help - sorry- and I used "High" as I think the "low" isn't active from the can bus.
2 года назад
@@gogop66 it needs both high and low and where you pop into the can-bus is important. I’ve heard of people having trouble with their transmissions (not going into gear or slow communication) because of the can-bus. Additional reading lead me to believe that the 12v battery and the switched lead from the transmission module both need to be wired to a switched connection.

I noticed that you don't have the EGR on the engine. I can see the block off plates, did you have a custom tune done to keep check engine lights away? I have a R2.8 in a 97 Jeep TJ and my EGR hasn't worked proper since 150 miles and it defaults the valve to closed, but I would rather get rid of all the unneeded clutter too.
Год назад
Hey Dave - I did delete the EGR system and the ECU was tuned to take advantage of that. Find me on Instagram and I can point you to the supplier (they prefer I not advertise about it publicly).

Do you know the curb weight of your rig? Thinking about using one of these is my 4x4 van. It weights 4750lbs but has 37” tires…. Wondering if it would be enough
2 года назад
An FJ62 is 4280lb curb weight. I don’t think I added much if any weight with the 4 cyl diesel vs the 6 cyl gas. The truck does great uphill and doesn’t seem to want for power at all.

My current plan is a isb4.5 into a hj60 body on a hzj79 chassis. How is the 2.8 like for performance/torque?
2 года назад
I haven't been on trail yet so I can't comment on that yet. On road, it's like a modern SUV in terms of acceleration. If I squeeze the throttle while turning it will spin the inside tire. I'm thinking it will do a burnout if I asked it to.

What was the ultimate decision to go with a 2.8L TD, rather than a Toyota 3.4 L TD?
2 года назад
Good question Tom. There are a few things that attracted me to the R2.8. The first is modern technology. If I'm going to go this far into the the truck I'd like it to be something that takes advantage of all the new fangled technology out there to improve gas mileage and power. Secondly, every Cummins service station and dealer in the nation knows how to work on these R2.8 engines and even has parts for them. Out on the open road this is pretty significant. Not sure how I'd fair pulling into a toyota dealer with a 3.4L in the truck. The real question is LS or R2.8. I went R2.8 because I think it's cool and offers a little more for going offroad. Don't need to rev the truck all that much to have access to all that torque. Thanks for the question.
@dsauce8780
@dsauce8780 2 года назад
Good mileage? Enough torque to move around well off road?
2 года назад
I'm still working out some kinks on the setup. Specifically that a diesel filling nozzel doesn't fit in the flapper of the stock gas filler neck, so I haven't gone through a full tank of diesel yet. Nor have I gone off road. I can tell you now though that there is plenty of torque. The truck squats and twists quite a bit when I put my foot in it.

Dude, I have a 2000 Dodge Cummins and a 91 and 2000 Jeep XJ. I bought each of them new and we drive them every day for the last twenty years. XJ and old Dodge Cummins are the best vehicles this country ever made. That's why they quit making them..... They lasted too long.

I did electric fans on my 60 series factory 3B diesel. Nope
2 года назад
No good? Sorry to hear that. What was the problem?
@flyovercounty1427
@flyovercounty1427 2 года назад
@ 2 fans that covered 80% of the rad could not cool the engine on 6% grades. I was looking to save some HP. I went back to oem viscous coupled fan. My electric fans did not turn as faat as the stock fan did at full engagement so were possibly blocking ram air? Also they were not ducted as yours is which increases efficiency. Nice swap project on your FJ

You wouldn’t call it a dodge lol, this engine has never been in a dodge. Dodge and Cummins are completely separate companies
