i have both backpacks and this is my personal review of both! if you really want something minimal, go for the kanken. it has less pockets and its smaller and more compact. although i wouldn't recommend it for school. it does help with your back, however it is uncomfortable for your shoulders. the straps are really painful. they are quite thin, and if there is weight put on it, it can be quite strenuous for a long time. they do include separate straps but they are usually additional costs. if they are in your budget range, you should go for it. however since its not really budget friendly it can be a downside. but the bags are made with a good cause, so you may go for it if you would like. the doughnut is a better option if you have a lot of stuff. the compartments are spacious for all your stuff. they are also really comfortable. they are more affordable too. however if you ate only using it for a short trip or a short walk with only a few stuff, the material is quite on the heavier side. if you wear the two backpacks with no items inside, the kanken is definitely lighter. this all depends on personal preference and what you are going to use your bag for. but take this into consideration if you are debating on which bag to choose and base your choice on your daily lifestyle. thank you! ^^
Which bag has sturdier material? I have a Kanken, and it is indeed very thick and sturdy material. So when you say that the Donut is heavier, would you say it is sturdier material? Thanks, amazing reviews :)
not sure if you guys cares but if you're bored like me atm you can stream pretty much all the new series on Instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend these days :)
@@chossan7550 "The included PE foam seat cushion is stored in the interior back pocket where it prevents the contents of the backpack from poking against your back." This is exactly what the Fjallraven site says.
@@chossan7550 Are you ok? Why do you have to come and create trouble? If you believe that I am incorrect by all means that is your opinion but next time you could show a bit of respect and take that last part with you.
Jasmine Paul well this can really happen when your fun fact ain’t that fun. Next time, just accept that there are people who can call you out so you don’t spread wrong information anymore. Peace.
I'm was torn between the two. This video made me decide. I'm on Team Doughnut's side! Saying the brand name is pretty sweet ;) Doughnut. I can say it all day!
I've owned and used my Kanken almost daily for 5 years. I was definetly a victim of the hype train. The bag is aesthetically pleasing and it was able to carry my essentials but it really let me down in a lot of ways. I had the same problem as you with paper getting wet in the rain - and it actually ruined some of my class notes on multiple occasions. I also couldn't fit a waterbottle on the sides which meant it took up a lot of room on the inside of the bag. The large part of the bag has basically no organisation leaving all your stuff in a big pile, and the outside pocket I found to be an awkward size where it was too small for pencil cases and such but felt too large to out keys in without having to hunt for them when I got home. The standard size kanken is also too small to fit my 14'' laptop in, meaning I have to use a second bag. The straps are so thin and small that when you're carrying a lot of paper and books around it really hurts your shoulders. The main reason I used the Kanken for so long was because I spent so much money on it and wanted to get myu money's worth. I wish I saw this video and knew about the doughnut all those years ago! Now I have more disposible income I'll definetly be investing in one as it seems to solve all my issues with the kanken while being cheaper!
OMG EXACTLYYY i agree with every single thing you said here!!! i was also a victim of the kanken hype train. i love it aesthetically but practically, the doughnut macaroon is so much better. i dont even see how getting the 15 inch kanken is worth it because kankens are sooooo expensive. the separate padded laptop compartment of the 15 inch kanken is tempting but i could get that and so much more with a large doughnut macaroon backpack for a much cheaper price
I used to think about getting a Kanken but when I saw the doughnut I was completely sold on it not only because of the price but because of how much it offered in comparison! I've been using a regular sized one for a year and I hope to get a 15 inch one next :]
As mentioned in the video the fjellreven kånken backpack is not really waterproof. It can take small amounts of water, but if it would ever rain heavily and one is wearing the backpack, the objects inside would get soaked (speaking from experience)
What series is the Doughnut Macaroon? None of the other Macaroons I'm looking at seem to have the anti-theft pocket and the zipper above the computer compartment.
i have a kanken i’ve had for many years and while it’s had much love i think i’m gonna upgrade to a doughnut macaroon just for the practicality - i truly can’t cope with the kanken just having one big pocket and have ended up with loads of smaller bags to keep things separated within my kanken which is a huge pain!
I chose the kanken 15”laptop backpack over the doughnut macaroon large purely for the convenience of a separate laptop pocket, yet the lack of organisational pockets is the biggest inconvenience
I have a samsonite with super good organization but since its heavy... Kanken is definitely amazing with such weight, I am really interested in buying it only because it's TOO light!!!
I have the two backpacks but I prefer and use the Fjallraven Kanken more simply because I don't want something heavy, the Doughnut Macaroon is already heavy even if it does not have anything inside because of the compartments but the Doughnut Macaroon is more functional than the Fjallraven Kanken because again, it has a lot of compartment which the Kanken doesn't have. It's just that, the Doughnut Macaroon is heavier that's why I prefer the Kanken more, that's just my personal preference. :)
Kanken is more durable and lightweight. Doughnut is good for organizing my things but its heavier. I don't also recommend Doughnut in a tropical or warm country as it makes you sweat profusely. LOL. Ive had both for maybe four or five years now, Kanken is still holding up pretty well while Doughnut's color faded. :( Kanken wins for me.
honestly i’ve had a kanken for years (it was my school bag so i carried lots of heavy books) and theyre much comfier than they look! the doughnut defo looks comfier but the kanken are absolutely fine so don’t let that be your deciding factor haha
I use doughnuts in the past, but love the compartment and organizing stuff, and use it to go out for hang out in the cafes and stuff.. But when on my trip to japan, there are plenty if walking and I buy so many stuff and just shove it to my doughnuts.. and after long time using in many walks, the shoulder strap are hurting me especially if I bring something more heavy.. and the more I use it the more I realize how uncomfortable it is.. So now I change to jansport who have more support for bringing heavy stuff
I personally prefer the Kanken rather than the macaroon because the macaroon is way heavier. I love the extra pockets inside and it is a pity that the Kanken doesn’t have any, plus I didn’t like the front pocket with buttons in the macaroon. I have got a London seventeen which is a cheaper dupe of the macaroon with same pockets. I wish the Kanken would have zipped pockets inside, that would be awesome!
Wish I could like the doughnut. I don't have either, and probably won't ever get either. But I LOVE the storage of the doughnut, but it looks so much more flimsy and not as stiff as the kanken (idk if that's how it's spelled I tried to remember D:) and I unfortunately can't stand those flaps over pockets, it just makes me want to never open the pocket. And the little metal bits connecting the top hand straps wiggle around too much for my liking, but ofc these are all just my personal needs! I've just found it interesting while searching for my perfect bag and finding what I like to make my own
Depends im planning on buying the doughnut for school since i can organize it more i already own a kanken but i think it would be better if i use it for outings or something ,tbh i like the kanken more since its more simple and elegant
I’m torn between the doughnut classic and doughnut large, purely down to the placement of that zipped compartment. Would be amazing if both the classic and large had 2 zipped pockets in those 2 areas of the backpack
i have a rose pink doughnut macaroon in standard size. it was the best purchase. bought it in Zalora last year with 30% off (so i only paid 2625 instead of 3750) it's waterproof but i dont know how to clean it especially the leather haha.
The classic Fjallraven Kanken uses vinylon which is basically plastic, unless you buy a rekanken then it's pretty much the same thing, Doughnut also offers their backpacks in a variety of materials including recycled polyester/nylon/leather
The Macaroon definetly is more organized, but I still prefer the Kånken, tho I'm heavily biased in many aspects 😅 Fjällräven Kånkens (as it's spelled here in the nordic countries) are very popular with finnish students. Many parents get the backpack for their kids, and because they're so durable, many still use them in upper secondary school, and maybe even university 😊 I myself opted for a different Fjällräven for school (can't remember the model sadly), but do own a Kånken for other use (I prefer backpacks over handbags so I use the Kånken as a handbag 😅). I personally really like Fjällräven bags, because they're durable so they last for a really long time (my father has a Kånken that has lasted him over 30 years now!), and they're by a nordic company 😊 and the Fjällräven company is opting to be environmentally friendly with their newer products! I own multiple Fjällräven products, and have been very happy with them. They're definetly designed more with outdoors use in mind, and some of the design choices with the northern climate in mind 😊
I use backpacks as handbags/purses, too, because it is much better on my back and limbs than carrying a heavy handbag or wearing a heavy messenger bag.
Perfect video. I love both of these backpacks but hadn't done a property comparison since I wasn't ready to buy. This video was so helpful. The donut by far is the better bag for me.
I wished you had compared the backpack straps of the two. I went and googled the Doughnut to see what the straps looked like. I prefer the sleekness of the Kanken over the chunky padded straps of the other.
But sadly it can sometimes strain your shoulders or arms over a period of time because of he thin and slick straps. But still, Kanken is a really good bag! :D
I totally get that :) Thanks for watching!🌻 Also , can you help my channel grow by sharing this video to your friends?I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much! :)
Kinda just worried since I JUST realized that the Doughnut Macaroon uses genuine leather. It’s been my Dream Bag for like, what, forever? But I’d prefer if the leather was synthetic...
There’s an alternative on amazon that sells for much cheaper called Himawari, the backpack looks exactly like the doughnut but to my knowledge doesn’t have actual leather. Sadly, it’s not waterproof but I have the himwari and it’s been holding up wonderfully even with my reckless use and many items and I’ve been using it for two years. But if you’re not interested in it, I hope you have good luck on finding a backpack that you like!
Lycoris - Yes, I’m familiar with that brand. I’ve seen comparison videos of the Doughnut and Himawari on RU-vid before. I believe the Himawari is somewhat water resistant?
Hey! I was wondering ... I kind of watch hundreds of videos to know how to recognize a real from a fake, but I still have doubts ... I was wondering where you bought your olive kanken (because I love the color and the leather version) Thank you in advance...
The 'special padding' is actually a seating pad that can be found in any Kånken backpack, not padding for your laptop, though, I guess it works as that too.
@@mei.papier I haven't had a need for it yet, no. But it's nice to have just in case you really need a rest and the only seat you can find is wet haha.
@@mei.papier The kånken was made for swedish kids. The weather is a lot colder and sitting on cold ground is not pleasant. Cleaning the original pad is really easy. Your pad seems to be cloth covered and might be more difficult to clean.
I'm really struggling to choose the right bag for me. I'm only going to put a 13" macbook with sleeve on it so the only factor I'm considering now is the durability. Should I go for the Kanken? Is it more durable than the other one?
Both bags are still in use so you cannot go wrong with either of them :) The 13 in MacBook + sleeve will be a little tight in the Kanken, unless you get the bigger 15 inch one. Hope this helps! This was an old video of mine, thanks for watching!
The biggest fail of the Kanken for me are the side pockets, which is supposedly for water bottles. Unless you have a very narrow, tall water bottle, I say don’t bother and just use it as an umbrella pocket, tissue or snack pocket. It’s not a perfect bag in my book and I’m still searching for that perfect bag. Lol
i raved about the fjallraven kanken for months because it looked so artsy but when i finally got one (for free, thankfully) i genuinely didn't like it lmao the straps dig into my shoulders and you can't even fit a regular tumbler in the side pockets. i also tried using it for school but i genuinely wouldnt recommend it because it's kind of a hassle to open + your things will just get messed up inside because of the lack of compartments and it's harder to look for things + you can't really put a laptop in the back compartment the large doughnut macaroon outsells any kanken in my opinion. doughnut macaroons are legit a bang for your buck
I definitely doughnut backpack, because I love the color, it's have a cute n cool combination color n that's so cool, and don't discriminate kanken backpack n doughnut backpack, because they same cool✨
I think the doughnut macaroon I bought might be fake or they changed the design. my logo doesn't have the red ribbon, no secure pocket on the back, and no zipper compartment behind the laptop section.
I know I'm late but I still want to reply your comment lol. I don't think your doughnut is fake. Actually when you buy the bag,you will get a code card (or whatever it's called) inside your bag. You can input your bag code on their official website to find out if the doughnut that you bought is fake or real. About the logo, they actually change it. The logo in this video is the older version. The zipper behind the laptop section is only for the large size. If you buy the standard size, there is no zipper in there.
I think I’m for Kanken. I like how Kanken more or less keeps its shape and I like how some of them don’t have any leather(free from animal damage) and I could just throw it in the washer. Plus I really love foxes and Swedish as well as other Nordic countries. Kanken also has more colors and is light weight and compact.
I wish I would have seen this video two years ago when I got my first kanken! I don't like it nearly as much as I liked my doughnut but when I moved on to a new backpack I got a himawari instead (just like doughnut backpacks) and its even better considering how much cheaper it is and the color options. Great video!
I got a Kånken, instead of a Doughnut, which I genuinely considered because I like the look of the Kånken and there is a proven track record of them lasting literally decades, which I don’t believe I’ve seen with Doughnut bags. That’s not to say they wouldn’t last, but I’ve not heard anything like that about them. And while that back pocket isn’t for laptops, I have the classic, and I totally put my laptop in that pocket. Though the classic size will hold a 15in laptop, but barely. 😂
I have watched about 20 backpack review videos, and thia is by far the best one, I did not see anyone else who looked at so many aspects as you did. Splendid review!
As a grade 6 students with a lot of notebooks ( 8 notebooks for subject 1 mastery and 1 diary ) i can't decide whether i will chose kanken or doughnut the thing i dislike about the kanken is its strapped so i guess its not made for school maybe? doughnut macaroon on the other hand is what i like compartments for my id cell phone pencil case etc. so with that notebook problem what size and what bag should i buy?
I agree aswell, I'm also in grade 6 and my notebooks don't get wet in the rain, I am satified with my largedoughnut backpack, and I hope you do too! :D
I only own a Fjallraven so I can’t obviously compare. Very happy w/ my Kanken, it’s so pretty& classic. I’m over loading &abusing it putting heavy stuff daily, yet I’m still amazed how it always feels so light and comfy!. No shoulder or back issues, nada.. I even bring it when I do grocery shopping 😂 it’s pricey, but this iconic bag is so worth it.
I’m scared if I get it it will be too small so can someone who bought it tell me if it’s too small to fit like a 1 inch binder and 5 or 6 notebooks that mayb be a bit big and also like one folder of five star and a pencil case please tell me
I have been using kanken since 2018 ☺️. I absolutely love it ♥️ I do not mind the price because mine is still good as new, it looks like it is newly bought up to this day 😌
I’m so torn between the doughnut (have been wanting it for years!!) or the Kanken Laptop version (the one with a laptop compartment at the back). I feel like I’d like the Kanken more, but I’ve been wanting the doughnut for so long, it feels strange not to get it 😂
I bought a macaroon in blueberry and I love it so much! I like the design of the Manley a little more but I don’t regret my decision because they didn’t have as many colours to choose from so I got a macaroon and it’s so rustic and cozy looking 😂
I'm pretty sure I checked their website and I've never heard such a thing. If you wax any fabric, it more often than not, becomes water resistant or waterproof.
I think i prefer more the Doughnut bag because it has a lot of compartments to make your bag more organize and this bag is big , its perfect for students like me 😊 even its a little heavy i can still manage to carry it. This is my own opinion please don't hate me 😊
