I think the theme of the album is that twigs sees herself as the two different perceptions of Mary Magdalene. The overtly sexual version from the Bible and the spiritual healer from other ancient texts. She was portrayed as the first when she broke up with her ex and the British press were pretty vicious towards her and she had to embrace the other side of Magdalene to help herself get through that time. The album is sort of a conflict between those two different sides of her and twigs coming to terms with the end of her relationship. At least that's how I interpreted it.

Daybed really is the poetic anthem for depression and loneliness; “rest becomes my no where” =oversleeping so you don’t have to feel anything. Not only was she just coming off a break up but she had fibroid tumours on her uterus she had to get removed so a lot of the time she was bed bound and in pain. During that time you end up just consumed in your thoughts and everything becomes abstract like the dust dancing in the sun light. Fruit flies from the dishes you’ve neglected start feeling like company and the room you’re in starts becoming suffocating like the walls closing in on you. Even the instrumental matches with the lyric “lower is my ceiling, pressing on my feelings” and it becomes so heavy and full of despair it breaks my heart. It’s my favourite song out of the whole record in terms of the impact it has on me, and her most personal and vulnerable song imo. I recommend giving it a few listens and looking up lyric meanings on genius but honestly I think everyone can interpret it differently

Finally. This album is definitely in my top 5 favorite albums ever. It holds such a special place in my heart. If you enjoy experimental female artists Sevdaliza is one to check out. Her debut album Ison or her ep The Calling are experiences in themselves. Her songs stick more to the traditional structure of music but the mixes and blends of different instruments are a treat.

thousand eyes is about breaking away from a relationship that caused you more pain than happiness. (a karmic relationship) since it's all she is known she feels all eyes on her. home with you is about coming home to yourself to realise no one can save you but yourself. sad day is about spiritual manifestations.holy terrain is about femininity. Mary magdelene is about stepping into your power and aligning with your divine purpose. Fallen Alien is about Narcissistic Abuse. Mirrored Heart is about divine counterparts or twinflames mirroring each other. Daybed is about depression. Cellophane is about not being enough.

Thank god. She is a performance artist. Her aesthetic range is amazing. This was a biblical experience

You should definitely listen to SEVDALIZA. You’re gonna love her.

Some of her earlier work is a bit easier to digest on a first listen! Especially on ‘LP1’. Songs such as: Pendulum, Lights On, Two Weeks, Video Girl have more of a ‘typical’ structure. Great video, really enjoyed :)

She comes from a dancing background so that’s probably why some stretches gave off that “lyrical, interpretative dance” vibe. She pretty much produced the whole album, choreographs and has a hand in directing all of her very powerful music videos also. FKA Twigs the greatest artist to come out of Britain in the 21st Century imo

That was pretty amazing. Would love to see a series of reactions to her from the beginning. From her Collaborations with Arca early on and LP1. Her trajectory has been pretty incredible as she cut this new lane of sound with Arca, then made it more accessible for LP1, and is now iterating on that style on M3LL155X and Magdalene to more artful visions.

You went into this without any of the preparation that others got from LP1 (more accessible) and M3L155A (probably even more experimental) before this one. I think this is her best balance of experimental sounds while still sounding grounded enough to play for someone else without scaring them (usually). Please do LP1!!! LP1 is honestly the greatest. Songs follow much more of a structure whilst being as textural and dynamic as the listing on Magdalene. Album cover also 10/10.

I was not expecting to see this in my sub box this morning!! I pretty much stick to hip hop, but Magdalene was in my top 5 favorite albums last year. It truly gets better with each listen and I think the album will age really well. So glad you got to check it out!
