I think that Fire nation was inspired both by the Japanese and Mongols considering their militant past. In the episode “The Headband” when Aang went to a fire nation school in the music class 3 girls were playing the morin khuur which is, in fact, the Mongolian national instrument. Also, you will notice that in this universe only Fire Nation has big percentage of women in their army in contrast with the other nations. In the episode “The Waterbending Master” Pakku refused to take Katara as his student because of her gender. In the Earth Kingdom women don’t seem to have much freedom either considering the episode “The Blind Bandit” where there wasn’t any girl student at Master Yu's Earthbending Academy. Not to mention, how Sokka was confused when he met Kyoshi warriors. As for the Fire Nation, not only they allow women to fight but they also can govern as the Firelord. Here you can see quite resemblance with Mongols. In Mongolian tribes women had much more rights and power than women in Japanese society. Most Mongolian women knew how to shoot, wrestle and hunt. Moreover, Mongolian queens would take their husbands’ place if they went to war.
