In croatian "i" means "and" and it's pronounced like "y" in spanish. So I count 1 i 2 i 3 i i 4 i i 5 i (I count in Croatian so it would be je'n-i dva-i tri-i-i čet'-i-i pet-i, if the seguiriya is slow enough, with the number one - jedan (pronounced as yedan), and four - četiri (chetiri) shortened to fit the beat). If I'm counting in english it would be one and two and three and uh four and uh five and; in spanish it's similar to croatian. When things speed up I only count the accents and go by feel.

@@teok5665 That's amazing! Each language gives a different soniquete ;-)

this is a fun topic. I play for dance schools in australia and have had to adjust the way i say it out loud because the dancers think of it differently. I learned it as "the arse end of buleria" (repeat, australian) 8 - 10 - 12 - 3 - 6 but the dancers count it 1 and 2 and 3 and a 4 and a 5. I have had arguments about the and of the a many times

Oh yes I can relate ;-) Anyways, most people count in 5 because it's more practical and gives more the "siguiriya soniquete", but it's extremely important to understand where the 5 numbers come from, and be able to understand it and count in other ways. As always, the more we are able to see the same object from different angles, the richer and more complete our vision will be. Thanks for the comment!

A fun explanation! Sometimes I don't count, I just play. But I might count it as 1, 2, 3 and a 4 and a 5, so 3 and 4 are longer. Or I might treat it like a solea in 12 beats, but sort of backwards so I get the siguiriyas accents: starting on 8 instead of 12. I should ask a dancer how they count it. :)

Extactly @ChuloDavidcito ;-) Thanks for your comment! Sometimes we don't need to count, and sometimes we do, and we have so many ways of doing this amazing compás. Nothing is wrong, as long as we stay a compás 😅 If you haven't seen it yet, I explained different ways of counting in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PXzrkSWFJq8.html Abrazo flamenco

Hi! I'm loving these videos! Great explanations about the flamenco rhythms. I'm a dancer and I've always counted it the same as above as in 1, 2, 3 and a 4 and a 5 and 1, 2 and so on. Only difference is in my head there's a pause between each count that's not actually counted if that makes sense!! So using a dash '-' to represent the pause it would be 1 - 2 - 3 - and a 4 - and a 5 and 1 - 2 - 3 - and a 4 - and a 5... I was always taught it was a 5 count rhythm and one day after years of dancing I figured out myself it was also a 12 count compás with 5 accents, and then later on I saw on the internet it could be thought of as starting on the 8.. so yeah great to hear all this information and make sense of it all :)

Excelente, and I have a suggestion pequeñita - the volume on your video is very soft. You could raise it a little bit if you'd like. 💃

It confuses me segueriya, sevillianas, solea por bulerias, they can use 12 beats and you start counting with 12, when I try to practice Bulerias is the only one I can improvise in because of the mode that's usually used and the standard progression A ASharp C G then back to A
@FlamencoMAPS
@FlamencoMAPS 7 месяцев назад
Hi! I understand that it's confusing but these compases are actually quite different. Sevillanas are in 6 beats. Bulería can start on 12, yes, but Soleá por bulería is like alegría or soleá and starts on 1, not on 12. Siguiriya cycle starts on 8... I explain many of these things in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CU6viq88FqQ.html I hope it helps!

Thanks! It is an original composition por siguiriya by my friend and percussionist Alex Carrasco and myself. But this piece has not yet been released ;-)
