Flames of War Panzergrenadiers - Camo at 15mm Kept Simple! [How I Paint Things]

Painting 15mm (or smaller!) miniatures always reminds me of something told to me about the difference in painting for display and painting for wargaming: "You're painting to be able to see what a miniature is armed with from a distance. The point of the paint is to aid target recognition."
Now, I'm not sure that's always necessarily true, but it's something worth considering when you look at how much contrast and shading you apply to your 15mm figures! Making them easier to see is no bad thing, especially when you're moving around large armies of miniatures in smart uniforms armed with different gear.
Thanks again to Battlefront for sponsoring this video with the plastic Panzergrenadier Platoon box!

One good thing about 15mm figurines mount on group bases is that the player on the other side is far more interested in the dice roll result than the figurines. With 15mm or less it's really about the contrast than the mid-tones. The eye if it thinks something is missing it tends to add it in, such as the mid-tones. I have issues with mid to late war German camo. If painted faithfully it tends to work and you get the case of the disappearing figurines, so you have to break it and only resemble the uniform for it to pop on the base. I can't stress enough how great I think you fast painting is. To many people put up videos of near studio quality paint job. Now if the average player tries this by the the army is finally painted your friends have moved on to another game. I try to teach our players to slap down base colours and mount the figurines and get playing. You can come back and finish painting them later. While it is harder to paint them mounted it does show what should be highlighted and what shouldn't be. Ie if you having trouble getting your paint brush in then leave it. As with all miniature wargames more time should be spent on officers and leaders. So in Flames of War the only near studio quality figurines are my Formation commanders. Do less work on the figurines mounted with so the commander really pops.

Oh wow. This came at a really good time. I'm just starting to paint my Warlord Games epic-scale Napoleonics, and I'm totally not good at 13mm. These tips helped!

FOW was sooo much fun when it first came out; it was also quite affordable. I ran the Bersaglieri, and they were a potent force. Many an opponent learned that 4-5 MGs in an obsolete M14 was still a literal handful of dice. The truck-borne 90 could knockout anything across the table.

Amazing! I’ve got a backlog of 15mm Flames of War infantry that I’ve found intimidating because of their small size. This is a huge help. Thank you as always!

I've been intimidated by painting at this scale as well but actually you've made it feel a lot more achievable! I've been watching a couple of O Group games on RU-vid and think the 15mm scale seems to work best for them.

Thanks again for another great video. Just tried this and it looks great. My only change was the helmets. I think they’re more accurate in Refractive Green but to each their own. Thanks again 😊

Great "How I paint" and a finish worthy of a collection, wondering if u lose sight of your camouflaged infantry on the table often 😄 Edit: I glue them on their spots with wood/paper glue, its sturdy enough while painting them and u can pop them with minimal effort off the base when needed.

Great outcome. I did a few 15mm pzgs as well, though I did plastic soldier company troops. Kinda tough to do camo at 15mm, but a group of them looks great on the table.

Fantastic! What advice would you have for someone with tremors (MS, Parkinson’s, etc) that is needing to paint 15mm? Would you consider a video on that topic? Or do you recommend any existing ones done by other YT content producers? Thanks!

I don't have any suggestions specifically myself, I'm afraid - I've got slightly unsteady hands on a cold day, but it's otherwise something I'm lucky enough not to have to deal with yet. There is a chap here on RU-vid that has MS who's done a couple of really interesting videos on it that I'd recommend: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fiUGJnZ--Us.html is where he talks about how to paint 'when you can't,' which might be a good start.

I went wild and bought a couple of armies or FOW. Once I got into the boxes and started getting the infantry ready I felt overwhelmed and they have been back on the shelf for 6 months. It's just so much stuff and it's all so small.

This is funny to me as I've been painting 15mm using your 28mm videos and just using brighter colors like buff instead of German Camo Beige. After using Strong tone they turn out just right. Very good, I'll change it up to see what happens.

I have to say that I recommend that every miniature gamer/painter paints a 5-10 x 15 mm scale soldiers. When I started on FoW moving from 28 mm to 15 mm really pushed my painting skills to a higher degree and gave me a better understanding of highlighting effectively and I since then even my 28 mm figures have looked way better. :)

Love your WW2 vids, especially useful as I'm just getting into What a Tanker! and Chain of Command. Would you be tempered to paint up any 20mm WW2 in the future? Would love to see your style applied to that scale.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 года назад
To be honest, 20mm stuff I'd paint much the same as 28mm. It tends to be a little more on the slender side by comparison to the 15mm figures, so the 'large' techniques don't look as out of place. Now, What a Tanker in 20mm... that'd be an interesting proposition. Just enough room to make the most out of a smaller gaming table, but with miniatures large enough to enjoy painting some slightly more detailed weathering and colour modulation? That's a thought!

I do not hide that I would love to see a tutorial (probably not only me) on how to paint grenadiers with Contrast / speedpaint / wash paints, there are no movies with figures for Flames Of War in the RU-vid sphere. I have already painted two platoons in this way, the effects quite completely, only the struggle with the feldgrau led to a diligent irritation. At the same time, as in Germany, over the course of the war, the fieldgrau was more gray, sometimes greener, depending on the country in which the uniform was sewn. At least this knowledge did not lead me to become a victim of my own historical accuracy.

Great video and good insight when to paint smaller figures as I've gotten down to 10mm. However given the formula is going to change, do you think this will affect drastically not only the regular Agrax earth shading here, but the Marine Juice and Aly's Brown wash? I think that would be a good video to compare both the 'classic' and 'new' batches. That is if it's possible for sure, as it was something that came to my mind when I was watching other youtube channels review the new shades.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 года назад
To be fair, I've stocked up on so much Agrax and all the ingredients for the other shades that - with any luck - it'll be years before I have to try the new ones. 😂
