The Grey League presents an overview in the Flan culture in the World of Greyhawk. Finding celtic inspired images with a darker skin are very hard to find so you will have to use your own imagination with images of red haired and faired skinned images. Most of the information was based on an article 'Races of Oerth' by Dennis Lovatt as well as published works such as 'from the ashes' and 'Living greyhawk'.

City of greyhawk is quite the challenge. I will make a note of your request for after my Sheldomar valley tour is over.

I play as a child of summer, a flan of the bright desert. Thanks for the flavor!!!

Very well done overview of the Flan. Tree worship, particularly the 'superstitious' planting of a household tree that reveals the state of affairs therein...is interesting. Thanks alot. 🌙

Excellent video. The Flan do not get enough love, IMHO. Thanks for sharing. Child of the Winter, BTW. :-)

I think it would better to base then mainly on natives. They sound like natives. Especially the way you describe them having heavy brows with wavy hair and copper skin. Sounds like hopis and pueblos.

"celtic inspired images with a darker skin" sounds like the men just had an exotic, and dare I say excellent, taste.

The physical description (and Gygax’s comments elsewhere) imply the Flannae are phenotypically closest to Africans.

I am glad you found it useful and I am working on an addition to the Flan as they need more loving ;-) Working on the Bakluni Culture and tackling the Elven migration and culture first. Hard to say which one I used back then but it might have been : Spread Map 576CY Full Map Layered 20K px - 2020

I really like the children of seasons idea. I guess it's your homebrew and not from a source? What's your thought about the summer children though? Why are they bound to fire? Isn't fire more important during winter season? Keep up the good work!

Hey Ben, It actually came for an older 'Oerth Journal' issue. Cant't remember which one. I did add some more flavour to that though. The Flan worship the Old faith where Obad-hai is the patron for summer and Nerull for winter. Life versus death. Where, according to the Flan Nerull slays Obad-hai, but is reborn again in the spring. Also, Flan also live in area's which are prone to forest and plain fires during summer. During winter the Flan will do their utmost to appease the Grim Reaper. Hope that helps a bit.

@@TheGreyLeague ah, that's why! I wasn't thinking about wild fires. That's a whole other aspect of the element, dangerous and hungry in summer while warming and warding during winter.

Although there are no paralel between the folks of Oerth and real etnicicities, I tend to imagine the Flan as a people resembling the Polinesian, Maori and Aborigin folks.

Having moved to NZ last year, i tend to agree to that more and more. Although the general feel of Gygax was probably more European/African I do feel that if we throw Māori/Pacifica in the mix it would make a lot of sense.

So... They're nomadic, East-Indian Celts?? I think most people imagine something completely different, when going off of what Gygax wrote. You might want to go back to the drawing board.

Most people may well imagine something else, but after many talks on canonfire it was apparent that people had these things in mind. Thus, that is what the video shows, a varied group of people that have one thing in common and that is their connection with nature. As Gygax said, make it your own. I decided for this video to not make it my own but what the Greyhawk community on Canonfire said.

@@TheGreyLeague - "Make it your own" is generally understood to mean that you come up with something original, not declare a culture to be some kind of collective self-insert, without a plausible basis. Such projection, coupled with an authorship by committee, is the epitome of laziness.
