It is explained in detail with very clear factors involved in flare system Hydrulics. Can also included about initial PSV sizing for flow rates for BP calculation. Final model using Aspen.

How to do flare system design is really understood. But the purpose of the segregation of headers and problems involved can be dealt better.

During a cold relief the flare header (including tail pipe) will be coated with Ice. How does the flarenet predict heat transfer in these circumstances? The thickness of ice layer is an unknown here. Further, when two different of sub-headers connect with each other (LTCS and SS) then how do we check compatibility of operating temperatures with respect to metallurgy.

Flarenet simulates steady-state flare network hydraulics and performs heat transfer calculations based on heat gain from ambient along the length of piping. The temperature results at various locations in the network corresponds to fluid temperature inside piping. It does not predict formation of ice outside the piping due to freezing of moisture. User has to provide ambient conditions (ambient medium, ambient medium velocity, radiation) and insulation layers, as applicable. If you want to estimate metal wall temperature, then check whether the relief will be continuous for long duration and thus metal wall temperature will be in steady-state with fluid temperature. For relief or blowdown with limited system inventory, user can use dynamic simulation software to predict metal wall temperatures.

When two sub headers of different metallurgy connects to the main header, then ensure at least 1m of length of non-flowing sub header has higher metallurgy (lower design temperature). For example, if LTCS with -50 deg C LDT and LTSS of -70 deg C LDT connects to main header, then for 1m section of LTCS sub header connecting to main header should be LTSS. This ensure that when relief/blowdown with lower MMT from LTSS sub header flows into main header then temperature creep into non-flowing LTCS sub header (expected to be less than a meter section) will not result in brittle fracture.
