Don't worry, you did no mistakes :3! Crash's name in Japan is, in fact, Clash Man, so it's correct xD. When the game was translated, for some reason I don't know they decided to call him Crashman.
To crash into something is to hit it with a blunt object. To clash with something is to fight with both members on the offensive, normally with sharp objects. I'm thinking Japan was going for the L. Also, fun fact, Japan('s public) actually officially translates that sound as an R; writing it as an L is just what some weird people do because they can't understand their 'R' sounds 'L'-ish without it being romaji'd as both equally.

@StarrtheCheetah Well, the video is not wrong about Clashman, because that's his real name. The Japanese language hasn't got the letter "L", and the "R" is the letter that sounds more similar to "L". So, they write "Kurashuman" (Crashman) but when pronunced it sounds like "Kulashuman". When Mega Man 2 was translated, it looks like Americans didn't consider his name could actually be Clashman... I'm sending you some picts of a Japanese artbook =D!
ffffft, Crashman without his helmet is the best part. He manages to looks the gayest out of all of them with that hair and the pink bow around his neck, which is only appropriate since he's the only one who outright states his preferences in his song. Also, am I the only person amused that Roll and Dr. Light are actively encouraging this? XD;
