Thank you! There is absolutely room for both kinds of lighting in a toy photographer's toolkit. The key is understanding them both and using the one that's right for your scene. (Or both even!)

Great video! I think the flash did a much better job at capturing the model than the light panel. I will definitely make sure to keep this in mind during my next photo shoot.
Another excellent video, thanks Anna! I'm one of those people you mentioned that likes to see the effects in real time, and have always been intimidated and scared off by using flash. This was very helpful and informative!
Thanks James! Wean yourself off having to see in real time and learn to previsualize. It's not painful, I promise 😉 It takes me minutes to set up my lights because I know exactly how I want my photo to look before I touch my camera. I suggest studying the Characteristics of Light video because once you can describe light, you can control it.

Excellent! Flash isn't difficult once you're used to it. You won't even need to have to do a bunch of test shots because you'll already know what the outcome will be, more or less.

Ok, finally was able to watch it all (took two days, with parenting I never really have time these days). The outcome for me: I need both tools!!! :-O I do own a flash but sadly no trigger. I'll have to see what fits my model and make some tests. But clearly, I do see the need for a flash now, even if it complicates things by not being to see things in real time. But I think I must get used to this too. Anyways, with the camera I am using, I already can't see the real time results from the LCD screen. In fact I have to test shoot at several speeds to get the proper exposure. So the lack of real time visualization will not affect me much I guess. Many thanks for this very informative video. :-)
Yes, you can totally have both and can mix them in one shot. It really depends on what you want to achieve. As for not being able to see in real time, you'll become adept at previsualizing the light if not for the simple reason that you will be studying it more intently because you don't want to keep shooting trial-and-error!

Another hit in my book. I am an absolute noob when it comes to flashlighting and have been looking to get into it (mainly because Amber and you are always so enthousiastic about it 🙄). Anyway, this video finally convinced me on the why i actually should venture into flash-lighting and now i am looking forward to the how (after i try and fail miserably a couple of times before learning). One thing i noticed that really caught my eye is with the two ‘rain-photos’; the one with flash did not show any (harsh) reflection on the minifigure-head.... does that have to do with the short exposuretime neccessary? Or is there another explanation? Again; thanks for sharing!
Thank you! The reflection is probably just an issue of having the softbox turned a mm away in the flash photo. Precision matters with angles of light and I wasn't exactly lining up the angle of the softbox with the angle of the LED panel. I'll do better next time!
