Jane Pauley looks back at the very beginning of "Sunday Morning" in 1979, and how over the last four decades the broadcast has stayed true to Charles Kuralt's vision - traveling the back roads, taking our audience places and showing them things they wouldn't see anywhere else on television, to make sure "gentler subjects" get their due.

This wonderful program has remained true and constant for 40 years. With it's thought provoking stories that mostly stay clear of what's popular in the moment. That's what I call quality television.

This is still the best show on television. I can’t find anything more informative and insightful.

CBS Sunday Morning is the only show I watch on broadcast television. I experience small moments of joy each time it's on. Thank you CBS.

If it wasn’t for CBS News Sunday Morning being on television every Sunday it would be boring right now.

This show is a treasure. I’ve been watching since Charles Karault was the host. When he passed away I was devastated and didn’t think the show could go on. However to my delight it did. 💕💕

My parents to this day record every Sunday Morning, and now that I'm older, I look forward to watching this program every week. It really is an escape from the news, and opens your eyes to so much more we have to enjoy on this planet, and told in a thoughtful and inspiring way.

Wow, they must have quite an archive then! What is the oldest recording they have? How did they record it -- on VHS, DVD, or DVR? My parents recorded onto VHS tape (off-the-air antenna, no cable or satellite) until 2019 when I got them a DVR finally.

Good Morning, I'm Charles Osgood and this is "Sunday Morning". Those were always the best words, in my lifetime, to hear every Sunday Morning- I often wake up early to watch, but my father, who watches the show religiously, often sleeps during the whole show.

I have deep respect for how calm CBS Sunday Morning is, and how it's been able to go on for this long. I vividly remember the days as a child when I watched the end of Sunday Morning with my family and always loving how the show's icon, the Sun shined at the end of the show. As Face the Nation next came on however, my family and I would leave within a few minutes of it to go to church. Charles Kuralt was definitely the right person to start the show up until his retirement in 1994, passing the torch to Charles Osgood. And for him to pass the show along to Jane Pauley, who has done a very good job to present the show her way with her charm and personality, it goes without saying that CBS Sunday Morning is certainly a true staple. I realize I'm about two years late to say this, but happy 40th anniversary Sunday Morning, and I hope there are many more years to come!

Congratulations CBS Sunday Morning. I am surprised, however, that there wasn't more detail on Charles Osgood's time on the show. My favorite memory of Charles's show was when he interviewed Vanessa Redgrave for her one woman Broadway show, "The Year of Magical Thinking," in 2007." So inspired, I took a red-eye flight to New York after work on a Friday to see my first ever Broadway play at a matinee on Saturday. I dressed up in fancy clothes, took a ferry from my Weehawken, New Jersey hotel to the Manhattan theater. I sat in the fifth row from the front and was transformed emotionally and spiritually by Vanessa's performance. My first (and only) Broadway show, I had a wonderful time. I wrote Charles and let him know how he and that segment inspired me. He wrote back sharing his gratitude. A wonderful experience I may never have had, had I not watched his show.

*Such a shame. The 40th Anniversary deserved a longer segment imo. The 2 Charlie's definitely deserved a bigger spotlight than a simple name reference. So disappointing.*

Per what you said, I'm glad I missed the opportunity to record this on a permanent disc (it was on PrimeTime Anytime on DISH the night it aired), because for a "celebration" where the Charleses are only name-dropped, and the bulk of the show is more about the stories and culture than the real history of the show, it would have been a waste of time.

R.I.P. Charles Osgood Wood. I never knw that "Osgood" was his middle name, not his last name.

**I disagree with 'gentler subjects' aspect...all subjects have their importance and their relevance****"The time has come (the Walrus said...) to speak of Many Things...of sealing-wax and cabbages...of sailing ships and Kings"**

2:05-"Time for us to part, you and I"-..."I"???? don't you and ME part? And this is a seasoned journalist! It is grammatically INCORRECT to say YOU AND I-it's you and ME! Time for us to part-you and me!
