During the Loma Prieta earth quake I was a 43 year old police officer working in Marin County, Calif. (the north end of the Golden Gate bridge is anchored in Marin County) I had just called out for dinner at a restaurant while on my shift. A few minutes later the lights went out and the glass lights hanging overhead about 4 ft. a part started swinging and bashing into each other. A minute later I ran back to my car and started checking buildings in my area for gas leaks, injuries etc. The shift would last 24 hours before I got relieved to go to my home in Sonoma, County 30 miles north. I remember looking to the east and seeing fires burning in Oakland and Richmond, Calif across the bay. In the rear view mirror I could see fires burning in San Francisco and directly ahead to the north in the direction of my home town near Santa Rosa, Calif. fires were burning as well. I'm a retired two tour Vietnam combat Marine. I was used to see such scenes but not in our own neighborhoods. I finished a 30 year career there in 2003. I moved to Phoenix, AZ. in 2007.

I visited San Francisco and Oakland about 6 months after the earth quake, I was amazed at how quickly they were able to clear-up the cities after such devastation. If I hadn't witnessed all the news coverage on TV, I would have never known there was a massive quake shortly beforehand. The only remaining evidence was the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was still closed. So much gratitude goes out to all you First Responders, both past and present...Thank You All!

Thank you for your military service. It's because of God and Vietnam Vets like yourself that I'm alive and here in this great country. God bless you. I remember that earth quake. That's all we talked about for about 5mos. straight in school and twice a week we had the school counselor come into our class to talk about the effects and trauma it had on people there and also how it spread to people who weren't there...all when we were in 5th grade!! Oh, and uh .. I'm in AZ too, so hello fellow northern neighbor.

I was 32 years old, and it was my 4th year working at Kmart. Back, when Kmart was owned by Kmart Corporation. I miss Kmart and Sear's. But, I still remember the Blue Light Specials at Kmart. I remember the new TV 📺Shows and Sitcoms that came on in 1989. I will be turning 65 years old. How Time ⏲️Flies By. P.S., I still remember all the Talk Shows that also came on TV 📺.

The blue light specials were so much fun. My mom would take all the kids and have us running all over the store. Do you remember those cookies that were like fig newtons, only they were iced and fruit flavors like apple, blueberry and strawberry?? Only Kmart sold them. If they were on a blue light special, we would get a whole bunch.

As another former KMart worker, I miss KMart, For a retail store It was a fun place to work (except for certain customers, LOL). It was a vastly different shopping experience Than "Wally World" Wally's just makes you want to leave as fast as possible. KMart WANTED you to linger (Hence the K-Cafés and the Blue Light Specials...) F**k Eddie Lampert for screwing up BOTH KMart AND Sears! I hate Wally World, So switched over to Target.

Even though the first short appearance was mentioned in the '87 Flashback, on DECEMBER 17TH the Fox broadcast network debuted the first full episode of The Simpsons, which on February, 2022 is still running after 717 episodes. Believe it is at least the 2nd longest running (# of episodes) animated show worldwide after the Dragon Ball franchise (there maybe someone else, but I can't remember).

"Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" (a.k.a. "The Simpsons Christmas Special") was the first full episode that aired on Fox (Sunday, December 17, 1989). "The Simpsons" would become a regularly-scheduled series four weeks later.

One year later, in October of 1990, at 27, I got the worst, most unexpected news of my life - I somehow "tested positive for the AIDS virus" as my doctor informed me. It's been quite a "life", certainly not what I expected, but I am grateful every day God gives me. Be good to people - too much darkness in the world these days and do the best you can, believe in "goodness" and be happy.

Unlike many others, you survived. Just like Magic Johnson. I remember too well that the AIDS crisis had a profound effect on young adults’ sex lives, and I was so nervous that I went to the county health department to get an HIV test. The 2 week wait to return for the results was nerve wracking. Fortunately, I was negative, and the counselor gave great explicit advice on how to play it safer. Nowadays, the tests can be found in drugstores.

@@diatribe5 Yup, Dia Tribe (great name....), those two weeks were AWFUL. Even worse was when I didn't hear back from my doctor, then she didn't return my phone messages. Then I received a letter in the mail asking me to come to her office to discuss my test results. I'm intelligent - I had to confront the truly unbelievable thought that maybe.....OMG, Dia, I truly went into a state of shock and my senses became "protected" for the couple of days until my appointment, the "positve" result and downfall. I truly was numb with shock for a couple of weeks, then massively depressed. I had jus lost my Mom in January, terribly sad for me, and had begun my "new LIFE" by getting a job at NYUCD, and planned to get my Masters degree. That life never happened.....if it wasn't for NYUCD- the people I worked with, the students - I would not have survived. God bless them all......Dia, thanks. Be good to all people and enjoy life. 1989 was the year my sister graduated High School as she graduated from Nottingham (Hamilton North) High School in Hamilton Township, NJ. Would go on a cruise for the first time when our family did the DISNEY/PREMIER CRUISE week where we went to WALT DISNEY WORLD for four nights with a three night PREMIER CRUISE to The Bahamas. Plus my folks took over Weinstein's Deli officially from it's original owners. Other things that happened that year was my cousin Michelle graduated high school, my aunt revealed she was pregnant with my cousin Rebecca, and would fly from Newark International Airport for the last time, and started flying from Philadelphia International Airport for future trips.

For what it's worth.... From Bamberg, W. Germany... 1/54th Inf., 1st Armored Division... We were well aware of what all was transpiring during this time. It had been going on for weeks by this time, and finally it got the whole world's attention. Us guys at Warner Barracks were tuned into this day after day... after day...after day... As American soldiers we knew that we would never intervene in such internal affairs with a vast country such as China. Long before the Berlin Wall fell, we were hoping, and expecting the Wall of China to go down... It never happened. But that lone guy who stood in front of that column of tanks was never forgotten. Never... Tiananmen Square

@@t-bo2734 There were other news events in 1989, but as you indicated earlier I don't see how Recollection Road forgot about this unless he was not around then: Berlin Wall coming down, yes. Operation Just Cause, yes. But to not remember this event is a bit unexpected. Tiananmen Square revolt was THE NEWS of the summer of 1989. I was one of the few guys in the barracks that bought a German TV to watch movies and such. And when this was happening myself and some of the guys would watch this during lunch and nightly news to keep updated on it, because we had Never seen anything like this before happen in China of all places. When _'Tank Man'_ appeared on the news, we all got silent and of course our jaws justed dropped with how brave he was and insane that situation was transpiring. Pardon my lack of the proper use of the King's English but one of the guys who saw that said _"That guy has some of the biggest balls I've seen."_ The rest of us chimed in _"Fuckin' A right man! This is some crazy sh*t!"_ We really couldn't believe what we were watching. We were young and naive then. Thinking and hoping for China that democracy would prevail. Needless to say, on June 4th that all changed and we were quiet about it afterwards. Just being thankful that we didn't live under a regime like China's government. RIP Tank Man 🌿✝️🌎🌤
