Sent my ECU off to 2WheelDynoworks for the flash treatment! Was it worth it? The jury is still out on that one. In this video I'm going to go over how I arrived at this point in the exhaust project and how its going so far. I'll also take a post ECU flash ride and see if there is really a difference. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out on any videos! Thanks for watching!

If you listen to some of my ride videos you hear the same thing. What they might have done was dial back the engine braking by increasing injector dwell. Basically, it will continue to fuel the cylinders just a bit between shifts to smooth out the bike. That little bit of fuel will create a slight rich condition in the exhaust stream and pop when it burns. One other thing that can happen during a pair disable, is it may not be completely closed off. That’s why I always opt for a block off and just install resistors. No worries about leaks then. Next time you want to do an ECU flash, let me know. I can put you in touch with the guys at Superbike Unlimited. They know ECU programming better than about anyone. His primary race bike happens to be a Kawasaki too. :)

Hey thanks for the feedback Tremonte! 2WDW got back to me after they reviewed my email and video and said I needed to both remove the O2 sensor and block the PAIR valve. I will say I'm impressed with their customer service they always write back to me very quickly. I will consider doing a full block off as you've suggested when I can find the block off plates etc. for my bike and work up the nerve to really take the bike apart. You may get a frantic call from me one of the evenings lol :) For now I'm just going to plug the hose as suggested. Anyway, it never dawned on me to reach out to you with Superbike Unlimited...just got in my tunnel-vision mode with an objective. Next time I'll definitely give you a hollar!

StormtrooperNinja cool deal. Did they tell you to use an O2 eliminator? Or did they say if they disabled the O2 failure in the ECU? If they reflashed it to be an open loop, the O2 should be internally disabled, and won’t matter if it’s left installed. Interested to hear what you find once it’s removed.
@StormtrooperRides
@StormtrooperRides 6 лет назад
no its disabled in the ECU flash to my knowledge but they did say that leaving the O2 sensor in could interfere with the map. I agree and I thought after it was disabled in the ECU then it wouldn't matter if it was still in there and I just assumed it was just plugging the bung. What do i know though? After I did remove it the backfire on up-shift stopped but I still have not yet plugged the PAIR valve which I'm doing tonight. My expectation is that after that all popping/gurgling on decel will stop.
@Tremonte
@Tremonte 6 лет назад
That should do it! Cool deal. Glad you got some progress. When's the dyno?
@StormtrooperRides
@StormtrooperRides 6 лет назад
Tremonte at this point it will likely be next week since the weather is sucking and I just have been really busy. I really can’t wait to see if this made a difference at all power-wise . I guess we’ll see but regardless I’m really happy with the new exhaust and Assuming the popping is gone after this I really like the smoothness of the bike after the flash.

I assume you talked to 2wheeldynoworks about your problem? If not let me resolve your issues. 1) You need to remove the PAIRS system and install the block off plates. 2) You need to disconnect your O2 sensors. With reference to the first - they sell the block off plates kits online. The hoses that you remove leave holes in your airbox and the kit comes with plugs for that too. Disconnect includes a wire harness attached to the hoses. Tape the exposed harness. Do not use the dongles they give you as it affects the resistance sent back to your new ECU. O2 sensor - the also sell you a kit that plugs the holes in your down pipes left by removing the sensors. Or I am sure you can just take the sensor to Home Depot to find out the threading and just buy two cheap screw in caps. Again, do not use the dongles supplied to cover your exposed harnesses. Just tape them over. They should have talked to you about this when you contacted them with the info on your bike. Nils is the man. As I posted previously, I had my 2020 Ninja 650 flashed and bought those kits to install during the ECU re-install. To get to the PAIRS system requires removal of the airbox. After I did mine I got Error Code 3A... Purge valve error. Purge valves are only on California emissions models as far as I know. I bought a KDS adaptor (model specific) from Graves Industries for $40. Hooked that up to an OBD2 (or OBD II) reader from Walmart for $20. Plug and play and very simple to use. Hey, $60 is still cheaper than an hour labor at the shop. The reader sees the error codes and let's you delete them so you're engine warning light doesn't come on. The KDS harness is typically under the seat and covered with a hazy, semi-clear rubber that houses the connection. Remember, I bought my ECU on eBay and it could quite possibly be off a California bike. You might not run into ANY code error problems but you definitely need to remove the PAIRS and the O2 sensors. The KDS adaptor and reader are good tools to have anyway. Hope this helps some people.

My 2020 Ninja 650 is my daily rider. I found an ECU on eBay from a 2020 ninja with only 1,200 miles for $107. Bought that and sent to 2Wheel just like you. They are FAST getting it back to you! Flash cost $239. Shipping USPS 2 day priority was $8 to send. They received it on Friday, flashed and sent it back same day, and I got it Saturday! I live in Florida!!! They're in Washington!!! That went from me to them and back to me in 4 days!!! Communication with them is awesome! You forgot to mention that you get free re-flash for life now on that ECU. You have a problem just send it back in. Tomorrow I put it in the bike. Back pop doesn't harm the bike. A lot will say it does. It doesn't. You want less back pop insert the noise suppressor, but you lose a couple ponies doing that. You can also go back to a stock air filter for the same result but that's really defeatest by nature.
@triv7252
@triv7252 6 лет назад
So much work has gone into this new Ninja 1000 to get it to meet Euro 4 emissions regulations that the ECU is totally locked down and difficult to re-flash. Personally, I've left mine stock as even just adding end cans affected how the bike ran at low to mid speeds. It's fine as it is, save your money.

Thanks Big T for the comment. My hope is that by going through this process others will benefit and will have an easier decision. That along with the discussion out here with differing opinions will shed light on how easy or hard a task like the ones I'm highlighting in this series of videos would be. I really do appreciate all the feedback but for better or worse I'm way down the rabbit hole on this one and I will see it to completion. Thank you much for stopping by and for your comments!

popping not a bad thing. Just tank tank off and pull hose from bottom of intake box and shove a marble into the hose and problem solved. Popping comes from cat converter being taken off.

Thanks Erick! I've gotten a lot of responses and I'm relieved that this is not something serious to worry about. 2WDW did get back to me and suggested I remove the O2 sensor as well as block the PAIR hose coming into the airbox. I'm going to give it a shot and I'll make sure to update everyone.

Ibr done the same ecu flash by the same 2 2wheeldyno. The end result was amazing for me. I had the popping b4 and after the flash. Its from the air induction the burns. The unburnt fuel in your exhaust. Like i said you have to put on blockoff plates or just plug the hose up under your airbox. But there is absolutely nothing wrong. But i dont have any noises while shifting gears like you ate saying. Try shifting faster.

I'm sure you've figured out the popping by now but the PAIR valve needs to be blocked off if you want it gone. I live near Kirkland WA and just got my 2015 Versys 1000 tuned at 2 Wheel Dyno Works. I paid extra to have it tuned on the dyno and they also blocked off the PAIR valve for me. No more pops or backfires on deceleration anymore.

@@StormtrooperRides hey got a quick question was wondering on your bike if your in low power setting and shift to first you rpms rise before letting the clutch out. But when in full nothing happens?
@bobbyblueace
@bobbyblueace 6 лет назад
On the Z900 the PAIR valve draws air in through a hose from the airbox. Maybe you can plug the hose that connects the pair valve to the airbox at the airbox end like you can on the Z900? I would expect a Z1000 to have a similar arrangement. Its not a 100% guarantee of no leaks but its unlikely. At least you can prove the theory until you buck up the courage to dismantle your new bike to fit block offs. I would expect the re-programmed ECU will prevent the CEL from illuminating.
@StormtrooperRides
@StormtrooperRides 6 лет назад
That is exactly the strategy I went with and I'll be reporting the results in a video coming very soon! Thank you very much for the suggestion! I'm getting the bike ready to take it back to the dyno to see what all this effort has amounted to! Stay tuned and thank you for stopping by!

Yes that is what several have suggested to me. Thank you for the advice! For now I'm going to plug the hose into the airbox from the PAIR as well as remove the O2 sensor as 2WDW has suggested. I'm looking for a block off plate kit that will fit my bike now and that hopefully will be included in this series in the near future! Thanks for stopping by and for the tip!

Popping is from your air induction system. The flash disabled the error code you have to manually block the air hose or put on blick off plates. I have the same flash n mines on pops ubder decel. I think your exhaust is the issue
@theozman38
@theozman38 5 лет назад
My Z1000 and your bike has the same engine and exhaust. I recently decat the exhaust with a y pipe and put short can mufflers on and mine pops and cackling like crazy. No ecu flash yet. I don’t think I need one. Lol. I’ve recently purchased a PCFC for it as of this message is being done it’s on the way. Ya. Block off the pair or plug the air line, it’s doing its job to ignite the excess fuel in your exhaust but it’s a bit Annoying after awhile. I’m doin this when I get off the road for some home time. Maybe a PCFC is in your future?? Ride safe

Is there an o2 sensor port in the exhaust. I was going to order a black widow for my 2018 ninja 650 and wanted to see if I have to take the bike for tuning or if that is an option. My reason for changing the exhaust is to get the right note for the exhaust sound.

Irfan Qureshi yes there is a bung for your o2 sensor and it will fit the stock sensor. Tuning should be optional but as all manufacturers will tell you, for optimal performance yes. For the record though when I put new pipes on my 650 I did not do a remap or add a PC.

I have quick question. when you were running your full stock exhaust and stock ECU setup. Did you notice a slight surging when were were like either in 3 or 4th gear and poking along in your neighborhood or in traffic when your were around 35 mph or 40 mph?
@StormtrooperRides
@StormtrooperRides 6 лет назад
Les, no I do not recall that happening. I assume you have the Ninja 1000 or have access to one, is that your experience? If so, wondering what might cause that and have you since taken the bike to Kawi for diagnosis?
@CYOTsNiper
@CYOTsNiper 4 года назад
Do they have an option to flash the ECU if your keeping the stock exhaust to just get factory lean settings changed and to just help it run smoother in stock setup?
@85waspnest
@85waspnest 6 лет назад
The popping is there even on a new one, you just can't hear it with the enormous stock silencers. You may have noticed most new bikes have oversize ugly silencers, this is to do with Euro 3&4 emissions and the PAIR system which the flash should have disabled. There's another way to stop the popping. Find the rubber vacuum pipe which runs from the airbox to the PAIR valve and block it off. My old Suzuki Bandit 1250 had a joint in the pipe located under the right hand side of the fuel tank. I separated the pipe at the joint, stuffed a rubber bung inside, reconnected the pipe and hey presto...no more pops !!!
@85waspnest
@85waspnest 6 лет назад
NOTE - The popping isn't caused by the engine running rich or too hot. Yes it will probably be running richER than before. Modern bikes are set up WAY too lean in order to comply with emissions regs. This is the cause of the jerky on/off throttle you speak of. Some bikes are worse than others. My 2018 Z1000SX (as they're badged here in the uk) does it and I find it slightly less noticeable in low power mode than in high.
@fallenwout
@fallenwout 6 лет назад
Jerky throttle is caused by the injectors shutting down at zero throttle + not idling. When you roll on the throttle and they come back on, you feel the jerk. I believe this is an European requirement.
@85waspnest
@85waspnest 6 лет назад
Mine's jerky when the throttle's held dead steady at 20 - 30 mph. Annoying but I've got used to it. I don't remember this happening with the stock silencers, only since fitting a pair of short stubby carbons.

This is what 2WDW suggested as they got back to me last night pretty much right after I posted the video. Thank you so much for the explanation and sharing your knowledge!

I am planning getting a Ninja 1000. ECU is flashed, had K&N filter, blocked pair valve, has M4 clip on’s, o2 sensor is disabled/deleted. Has a check engine light on. The seller said it is because of the intake mod to support the ECU flash. No engine braking after that. I guess it’s Ivan ECU work. I couldn’t test ride Should I worried about the check engine light is on? Please someone guide me if there’s anything that I should be worried about
