Great podcast! Brought me a lot of clearity on why I am choosing to ride flat now. Anti rocker is easier for me to lock on grinds but they feel a lot better on flat because of the extra speed and being forced to lock the grind clean from the beginning to avoid wheel bite. It’s a challenge I am enjoying after 15 years of riding anti!

When I started skating (1994ish) everybody rode anti rocker. It was the standard. Around 97', everybody switched to riding flat. I had K2 Fatty's which I rode anti rocker, then switched to the Fila Smooth-y (soft/hard boot hybrid) that had stock flat setup. I rode that way and never suffered wheel bite, big gaps where a little less intimidating because of the extra speed and softer landing. I just waxed curbs a little more and got lower on my grinds.

Great topic. Lately I hear the term “cheater skates” a lot to describe an anti-rocker with big soul plates lol. I sorta resent that term… its judgy, and no one should have to punish themselves to learn tricks, just use what’s comfortable. I mean does that mean a flat setup is a cheater skate for swivels and flat ground maneuvers? Cause as you said, Broskow can do them with anti-rocker…

Started in 99. Skated all of my "good", younger years on anti like most. When the Kizer elements (with the H-block you could flip around for deeper or shallower groove) came out I switched to flat. Control felt more like my roller hockey background. Then the slimlines came out and I rode those flat,55-56mm, for years. However, while I never stopped skating, my skating consistency decreased do to my career and more recently, a family. I'm not as disciplined or as technically good in my movements anymore and unfortunately don't have the time to dedicate in order to reach that level again. I made the choice to return to anti after almost 10 years flat about 2 years ago. I can't afford to catch my wheels and die. Haha. If anyone wants to try anti again I found that the aluminum core wheels help keep that speed feeling you get from flat. I have 60/88a for indoor wood parks, 64/90a for smooth outdoor parks, and then regular wheels for street/driveway skating. Definitely give metal core wheels a chance. Look at CJ flying around on them while skating anti.
@jasoncalva
@jasoncalva Год назад
Omar Wysong was the first to remove the middle wheels and ride “freestyle” in the modern context. Latimer and Farmer started riding with no middle wheels and then began developing the Xsjado Mook frames. (The Kizer Type X frame is the Mook frame retooled to their brand) I think Kizer Type M frames are still in production, and Kaltik still makes their freestyle frames. I don’t like freestyle frames, but don’t mind skating a normal frame without middle wheels to make them lighter since the grooves are better and less sloppy. (But prefer flat over all else)

Really like those new channel 11s! Well done: informative to newer bladers but you also get to hear sth about blading history and your own experiences! Missed opportunity here to talk about channel 11 or 33 grinds in flat vs. anti 😉 Finally becoming a patreon - love your content and Austin's new esit and Billy in Mesmer's - you guys are doing a great job skating and being ambassadors rather than gatekeepers to our community. Love the open mindesness as well. (Skated in early 90s and back since 5 years so flat was always the way to go for me, but I use anti to practice new tricks on my home driveway box, as that doesn't need much skating and I get all the benefits from anti - multiple setups has definitely become the way for me as an old back to blader ;-)

Loved the discussion. I have 2 set ups one flat and one anti. I love my M12 with the Fluid 5 frames but I use 56mm Muzzle wheels to make things a bit easier. If I am going to skate ledges or at my local park with very little transition I use my USD Sway with Slimline 2 antirocker. I find it more comes down to what I want to do when it comes to it. If I want to do more swivelling about I go with the flat frames but if I know I'm going to ride chunky ledges anti every time. I do have very fond memories of the old Xsjado Mook frames.

For the last few years I’ve been riding Flanti-rocker. It’s anti but using a bigger wheels outside but still a regular wheel not a anti wheel inside. At the moment 64mm outside and 60mm inside. Symmetrics and Kaltik V2 are really good frames for this. It gives you speed and smoothness for all the awful paving, but the stability of anti and is much more forgiving on grinds. Depending how you look at it, it’s a best of both worlds or worst of both. Depends on what you what to keep and sacrifice. I feel there’s a lot of room for experimentation still.

I remember skating Fiziks back in the day with 52mm eulogies and still would get wheel bite. I ended up switching to freestyle exclusively for years. I snapped the Fiziks, a pair of Salomon frames, and and pair of Ranier Pyramide fluids. I lived the Pyramide fluids for freestyle. I got super good at landing in that tiny h block that I had grooved so well. It's been years since I've skated, I'm interested in getting another pair and skating again. I had so many great boots, TRS access, Rzr Elliot 2s, Murdas, Deshi CKs, Salomon VM and Rob Thompsons, and Valo EB1. I'm interested in the Blank SK or Aeons. only thing is back in the day I always skated skates that were too big because of my wide ass feet. I'd like to see if I can try a smaller boot. I also had Salomon ST 9s and 8s and TRS Estillos. I had so many pairs. So many memories.

started skating in the late 90s when Team Paradise was still a thing. first skates were walmart skates w the middle wheels removed. went to osyi medium 2 years back. There was a learning curve, but the speed is worth getting over it. just wax for wheel bite and get more speed. tried to skate anti the other day just to see what it was like. it’s complete trash. yeah i could lock on to anything and spin out of anything but who cares. it really wasn’t worth it to go back in any measure besides vanity/ insecurity with technical grinding. if you street skate then get 4 down and wax past to where the wheel touches. my soul plate and wheels last way longer now, i’m not replacing parts as often. and i’m getting on top of my tricks easier w more speed.
