'Anti Rocker' is the method of putting two smaller middle wheels on inline skates to make grind tricks easier. More popular with skaters back in the day, but is it time for a resurrection?

I have skated anti since I was 12 years old (2000) and still love it. I need the on-rails feeling. I skated the same set of GC anti's in about 5 different pairs of skates over 6 years. The only antis I've ever had trouble with were the Kizer grind rocks that sounded horrible even rolling. I'm now on 3D printed Higgs Boson reps and had 0 problems. Anti 4 life.
@BrandonDrummond
@BrandonDrummond 2 года назад
When I tried this last I had the same problems. All grinds were so much harder on anti even tho I skated anti-most my life 😅. A commenter pointed out that what changes from flat to anti is being able to do micro adjustments before you jump at a ledge. On anti, you have to line up your jump more accurately due to the train track feeling. On flat, you can make little turns last minute to line up.

The recent resurgence in skatng flat imo was when the Oysius frames came out. The combo of big wheels, huge h block while still maintaining the maneuverability and speed of flat was an eye opener for many.

It's been awhile so it's worth trying again but I never liked the floaty feeling of flat skating. That confidant base while rolling anti makes jumping and airing so much nicer in my eyes. It just comes down to preferences and what tricks you actually like doing. That regardless what side your on switching always feels awful. After trying a million different set ups I have come to love 50/50 frames with a good metal core 60mm & UHMW antis.

Looking forward to this one. I went to flat a year and a half ago and love it. I tried anti after a while and absolutely hated it, then I tried again recently and didn't mind it that much. Dare I say I even enjoyed something different. Now I go between the two every now and then, the one thing I like with anti that I never used to think about is the solid landing with no swivel that I get sometimes with my flat rocker setups.

As an old fart of 51 and a quad skater who’s recently converting to inline, I’m finding anti much slower although it’s made learning to grind easier. I’m considering going flat though just for the extra speed and being able to turn, even if I need to concentrate more when grinding - which isn’t a bad thing!

@@towaofficial What? For a real man? LOL. You guys are hilarious. I'm not quite as big but I'm 6' 210lbs and I use my weight to go faster personally. I usually jump into a ramp and just pump. Anti or not, it’s up to the blader I think. I’m so use to my anti set up since 15 and love it! Weird feeling the space in between while approaching the pyramid or just a little ramp but again I’m so use to my anti set up. All big wheels with no anti is scary actually. All big wheels with no anti feels like I’m just fitness blading rather then aggressive! Wouldn’t feel comfortable grinding with all eight big. Would be afraid to hit those huge wheels in between to be honest while jumping onto a ledge or rail. But having all eight big is great for speed, half pipes, just working the course with ramps rather then grinding! Cool video guys, wish I had your job! Looks so fun!!! Peace ✌️

I am completely the opposite way. Like Broskow, except not NEARLY as good, lol. I hate flat and prefer anti. I do like Flat sometimes in a park, and definitely for just cruising around not doing any aggressive. I just don't know why EVERY VIDEO OF ANTI I see, most of the time, they are using those shit plastic ground control wheels. Or something similar. I use a LEGIT urethane ANTI, usually from Dead wheels. With bearings and spacers. This is how it was back in the day. No noise and they ACTUALLY roll if they hit something on the ground. I should also state that I started back in 1995 in Staten Island NY and we all skated anti back then. Flat was just getting a little popular when I stopped. I quit in 2000 just as Fish and Franco were putting our crew and SI NY on the map. But I started again 3 years ago and I still prefer anti.

The way frames are now with a huge h block area you really don't need anti rocker, back in the day antirocker was born out of necessity, now that need has been answered by bigger h block space, makes sense to take advantage of a flat setup and just skate harder wheels in the middle if you feel like you need to!

Haha this was awesome! I keep going back and forth, but think I've settled on anti (urethane antis, not the loud plastic ones) with quality ~62-64mm round profile outer wheels. I haven't felt enough "benefit" when switching to flat from this to warrant the extra wheel bite yet.

Going from flat to anti is not an easy transition. I think it would take more than one session to really get a feel for how to maneuver well on anti, and to give a truly fair comparison. Stuart Brattey brings up some interesting points in regards to the benefits of Anti Rocker for skating in general, not just for easier grinds, on his episode on The Wax Toaster Podcast. Definitely an interesting listen, especially considering his background with rockered set ups and Wizard skating.

This was entertaining! To this day I've never skated aggressive flat! But I do go between my SL's and my RB cruisers and the difference in speed and maneuverability is absurd. I think if i was skating aggressive more these days I would invest some time in to going flat, purely for the reason Jake pointed out - it makes the in between bit way more fun.

seems this switch happens every so often. I remember starting skating in 97 ish and anti rocker was the norm, then around 98-99 everyone just collectively switched to flat. Came back to skating round 2007 ish and everyone was back on anti´s and freestyle, and maybe about 2 years ago the switch back to flat started.

Indeed, that's also how I remember it. mid-nineties when I started, everyone was on anti. then late nineties everyone switched to flat. Then I would say early-mid 2000s many went back to anti and then a couple of years back usage of flat setups increased again.

I think part of the change in 'norms' was down to frame design and grind technicalities. Mid 90's the split between middle wheels was tiny as a lot of people were skating rec skates aggressively. Come late 90s wider h blocked frames were more commonly available so flat was more viable. Fast forwards to late 00s technical switch ups, shuffles and pivots started to shape opinion about anti rocker use. That brings us to current day where we have flat frames with huge h block spacing, dare I say it we have now reached the pinnacle of wheel setup choice?

My favorite frames have always been the Kizer Freestyle type M, just h block for days, light, sturdy, no rattling antirockers. THo... the rattling antirockers don't rattle for long when ur doin street skating and they get cut up and become one with the frame haha so ultimately antirockers felt like they'd just become freestyle frames after a bit of street use. It's so funny to see everybody on flat these days, last time I skated regularly it was all about antirockers and xsjado just blew our minds with their crazy x frame freestyle frame haha. oooh memories! Now I wanna go back and watch ego again haha, good times.

After getting back into skating 6 months ago, after almost 30 years away, I immediately started on flat. Recently I tried out anti-rocker and I agree with all the opinions here, it just feels so much worse to roll around, and that is so much of what I like about rollerblading at this age.

My switch came from the Kizer Slimline 2 in around 2012, I just love the option to run bigger front and rear wheels, just helped with uneven surfaces. I came from a full freestyle set up but sometimes would struggle getting a decent lock on a rail and being a bit messy and lazy with my feet. Then picked up some of the Bake frames, 72mm flat and never wanted to go back, although they are pretty heavy.

Personally regardless of trends I use anti-rocker (with grind wheels). The reason is if I am grinding a rail or ledge where falling is likely gonna hurt a lot, I have less chance of bite on that obstacle from the rubber middle wheels. But bigger wheels and frames are great for doing gaps or just bombing around town on. To each their own though.

I skate a 64mm anti rocker setup so I still get a bit of speed. I wouldn't mind trying flat on an agresive setup again though. The Oysi medium frame appeals to me the most but the main thing stopping me is the limited availability of the wheels in the sizes needed for this (65's on the outside and 58's on the inside)

Had Kizer Suspension M-type frames around that time too which were interesting for sure! Tried a Flat set-up for about a month when I got the Bolinos or so and I liked the speed increase from 8 wheels over 4, but wheel bite was always an issue for me... I tried antirocker for the first time awhile back. Hated it. But then tried again on the cults with a fluid V frames, and loved it. Didnt experience the train track feeling much at all. The key is, you have to shrink the wheelbase down so the wheels line up almosy directly under the heels and toes. Once I figured out the error of my ways the 1st time, im loving antirocker. The paving slabs are rough and uneven so had to skate flat to get any kind of roll out of it, and reduce the risk of just stacking it rolling along. Started in 99. Skated all of my "good", younger years on anti like most. Usually with 56-58mm right? They were trying to figure out which frames started the change. I'm thinking it was the Kizer elements, with the H-block you could flip around for deeper or shallower groove. That's what got me to change. Control felt more like my roller hockey background. Then the slimlines came out and I rode those and rode flat for years 55-56mm flat. However, while I never stopped skating, my skating consistency decreased do to my career and more recently, a family. I'm not as disciplined or as technically good in my movements anymore and unfortunately don't have the time to dedicate in order to reach that level again. I've made the choice to return to anti after 6-7 years flat. I can't afford to catch my wheels and die. It's obviously possible to roll fast and fly around parks. Just look at CJ. I find that the metal hubs definitely help with speed. Just need to find the right set up.

My memory is a bit fuzzy on the details but Cosmo wheels is what began the flat movement. They had a cryptic advert in I think VG5(?) that ended with the words “4down”. This was for a wheel that was maybe 50mm 90a. It was large enough to… well, not be an anti-rocker wheel, and small enough to create a larger gap in the center for grinds. Some skated began incorporating larger center spacing (5th Elements, Dirks, etc..) Shortly after UFS was developed (just after the failure of the Senate wide frames that never ended up making it to market). Anyways, after that grooves just started getting wider. But to my knowledge this “4down” is was sparked it. I switch back to anti-rocker in 2010. It was admittedly awful feeling for the first days, now I’d never go back to a flat setup.

I agree with you guys, I started out flat in 98 with k2 style points bobs, later switched to anti and did so for years just like everyone else. In 2020 I picked up some oysi mediums and fell in love, not quite as good at grinds on flat though, or I suppose there’s a slight bit of rocker on those. But 2021 I picked up the 5050 prime frames when they came out and some dead antis and figured I’d give it another shot just to see, and my conclusion is that the act of skating itself feels fucking horrible on anti, feels like skating through mud and you can barely turn. It could be useful if you’re trying some new grinds on a practice rail or something, but the act of skating itself is just simply not fun in comparison to flat or having some rocker. It doesn’t help that I recently got into wizard skating and that opened up a whole new realm of movement on skates without grinding.

 @LocoSkates Another thought I had - I would assume Jake and Leon are skating a longer frame flat and then just put anti's in it which would add to the train track feel. A shorter dedicated anti frame with round profile 60's or something might feel a lot better? Gaston had a proper anti frame and seemed to enjoy it more. But the rough ground/street thing yeah that's never gonna feel good on anti!

Back in the day I was flat, started just park, started Street and went anti rocker with the ground control, noise was horrific, then came the kizers with the huge block (forget name) and never changed back. Will say my favourite/ safety trick used to be back torque and was bliss with the ground controls, not they great with the pretty square shape of kizers. You get used to the tramline feeling of no middle wheels, flat is just way too sketchy and near impossible on the rounded ledges, which most of Bristol's has, maybe new wider hblock frames have fixed that but if you wanted to do an acid or top soul at big Lloyds Bristol ledges, you better have some balls or ridiculous wide stance trying not to get the wheels to bite.

I've stated antirocker for years because I couldn't grind well when I first started. And all my friends skated antirocker too. I want to move to a flat setup, currently on usd thrones freestyle frame. Any recommendations?

I skated both flat and anti rocker i like both just think it depends on the frame and skate of course wheels too. I think it is easier to find your anti rocker setup.

Flat has a value for the rolling advantages and anti has advantages for ease of grinding. Enjoy skating, however the setup. 72/60 Oysi is my vibe✌️

Well, this has done nothing to soothe my anxiety over getting back out on a pair of skates in close to 20 years (SLs with plastic anti-rocker GC frames!). Saying that, I switched to anti-rocker when the Mindgame Higgs Boson grind wheels came out, so it might be alright...maybe.

Back in the day I had 72mm wheels on the outside and 47mm anti rockers. Absolutely ridiculous setup and I played hockey in them too.

Random production request: please clip your Rode mics inside the shirt (clip facing out) so they don't hang off away from the body so awkwardly!

I have tried to go flat a few times (Kaltik, Oysi, Aeon, THEM street frame) and always find myself back on anti. I find with a large wheel (currently on 64s with Prime frames) the speed isnt much of an issue, and I am so used to anti the "train tracks" doesnt bother me.
