Should we glue down insulation on flat roofs? Personally, I think the only time you glue it down should be when you can't fix the insulation down using thermally broken fixings. Roof insulation when delivered to the site should be checked for moisture content for two reasons 1) if the moisture of the insulation is too high will the glue work 2) If you fix wet or damp insulation into your roof you could be locking the moisture in and that could course interstitial condensation. We know we can trust a screw to work and not to fail but we don't know if glue works until it fails so surely glueing down insulation should not be the chosen method and should only be used if there is no other way. Wind uplift of roofing materials is a great concern with building control and health and safety. Wind uplift is when the wind picks up a roof and rips it off. This can happen on exposed edges of the roof or from the centre when a vacuum effect happens. Badly stored insulation from the manufacturer is also a problem, I have been into lots of builders yards and seen that the insulation is stored outside and in some instances has been outside for a great period of time. When delivered to the site the insulation should be checked for moisture content and returned if it's too high. Storage of roof insulation at the job or on the building site is also crucial, it should be stored inside and in a dry environment. During the summer months this is normally not a problem, but in the winter months keeping the moisture dry can be a problem. Construction moisture building up in roofs is a well-documented problem and buildings constructed in the winter months are prone to this problem. If a roof is being constructed as a cold roof in the winter the external air moisture IE relative humidity could be up to 100 % on some days and not dropping down to 50% for some time therefore the chances of the insulation drying out is imposable in fact mould and fungus could thrive in these conditions.
