When I was 14 we stopped for gas and I saw a flathead engine sitting outside of the garage. I asked and they told me it was no good and headed to the junk yard. I asked if I could have it and they said sure. I talked my father into putting it in the trunk of our 1936 ford and we took it home. I had open wrenches from 3/8 up to 3/4 and a adjustable wrench a couple of screwdrivers. With I took the engine completely apart. Heck of a time getting the pistons out with a ridge which showed lots of miles on this engine. My dad eventually gave it to a friend of his who rebuilt it. I just love the sound of those motors. Eventually a friend who had built a 40 ford race car with a 3/4 race flathead let me drive a couple of laps in it. Thanks for letting me hear that sound again.

When I was a teenager back in the 1960s one of my buddy's dad owned a body shop. He had a 1950 Ford F-1 pickup that he restored. During the summer that I got my learners permit I worked for him. He would let me drive that truck. I loved how smooth that flat head ran and the truck drove like a dream. I have loved flathead V8 Fords for over 55 years.

There is nothing.....nothing.....more musical to my ear in the engine world than a 239 cu in flathead Ford V8. Dad had one in his 48 Ford Bonus (4-speed crashbox with a first gear that was good for idling the truck straight up the side of a 10 storey building), single vacuum wiper (that stalled in the middle of the screen when wide-open throttling up a hill with a cubic metre of builder's mix on the back) and one very noisy centre universal joint. I loved that old beast though. Hearing that flathead burst into life and idle so still was just magical. Thanks guys!

Love the vid. I would try blasting the intake with crushed walnut shells. It cleans the aluminum without removing any material. Leaves a beautiful smooth surface on the part makes it look like new.

Got tears in my eyes when the flathead fired up. Had a 52 twodoor Customline in early sixties. The engine was a "Stratostar V8" and the tranny was a Fordomatic. Should never have sold that beauty.😢

The best starting Ford I ever had was my first car that I bought for $20.00 in 1972 a '63 Galaxy XL with a 352 two barrel. I rebuilt the engine in high school auto shop. All you had to do was pump it a couple of times when it was cold and just touch the starter and it would start in less than a half rev. When it was hot it would start even quicker.
