For the past few months I have been testing many 47 clones and the Flea is the one that won all the races even compared it to the Telefunken U47, the Flea and Tele were super close, but I could not justify paying more than double for the name. The Flea has that round bigger sound in comparison to the rest (SAE 47, Pearlman T47, Heisermann 47, Peluso 47) My Flea 47 will be arriving next week! And yes I completely understand where you are coming from in regards to Stam, I have a few of their outboard units (2 x 1073 pre/eq sowter, 2 x Stam Pultecs) and honestly they sound great! I also have the Stam 47 fet, which is fantastic on kick by the way, I would give that a shot if you can. As you said, patience is the key with Stam, the guys truly mean well and are doing their best, I do wish them well.

I found the Stam smoother with the lead vocals, but I'm a drummer and it would definitely be the Stam for me. Close comparison though, if you had the money you would probably get both. Now the waiting, that's worth while if you pre pay and save a significant amount of money, and if you want quality, you don't want to rush it. But it's a subjective thing too, we all have different ear canals etc. Off to sound Gym for me.I would expect to wait 3 months the way Stam works, they reject anything that doesn't come out as expected and start over. and only in batches, as for the cable, Mogami would be replacing any cable that comes with the mic, then I"d starve for a few days.

The hi-mid and top end is muffled on the stam compared to the flea. The low end has a mud on the stam where the flea has a more pillowy low end.

Have you seen the vintage king video of their flea47 vs their u47? I may be wrong but I feel their u47 is also quite a bit darker than their flea. It’s especially noticeable on the drums. They get quite a bit darker . The vocals do have a bit more body and the guitar is less noticeable to me . A part of me wants to say the stam sounds closer to that Real u47 actually . Idk. What do you think? Iv also looked into the golden age 47. That one doesn’t seem too bad to me.

Thanks for the link! I hadn't seen that yet. With any of these clones, it is important to keep in mind that they may have matched the U47 they had access to exactly but those two U47s may sound quite a bit different, you know? Personally, I think it's more of the midrange where the Stam didn't quite nail the 47 sound, not the top end. Having said that, there are places(like drum room mic) that I preferred the Stam. It is a fantastic mic for sure! Speaking of 47 style mics...I've got my eyes on a Heiserman H47 to try next :) Let me know if you end up checking out the Golden Age 47, I haven't heard that one yet.

@@SeawellStudios would you consider the flea to be a world class vocal mic like what you were looking for? What components did yours have as far as tube and capsule? Just trying to decide on one… used to using a Wunder CM7S in studio but have seen jacquire king track vocals with a flea 47.
@SeawellStudios
@SeawellStudios 2 года назад
@@erickarge1838 I defintiely do consider it world class. At that level, mics are just different but not necessarily better. I think it's all about demoing a few and seeing if your voice fits best with a 47, 251, or 67 style mic, etc... Also, consider the Flea 47 Next if you're just planning on using in cardiod only for vocals, could save a good bit of money. I think Jacquire King does amazing work so if he's using one, that's quite the endorsement! My Flea had the F7 capsule and EF12 tube.

I also own a Flea 47. It is probably the best overall value on a 47 out there. I demoed the warm audio 47, the Paluso 47, and a couple of others in the flea was just a much better microphone all around and much better customer service. The warm audio 47 is probably priced about $400 too high. I thought it was very cheap sounding. But the flea is the closest copy of the original that I have found.

@@SeawellStudios I had their wa47 in my studio for a trial against their 251. I liked the wa47 better. I ultimately returned it but still wanting one. I have their wa67 in now. Trying it out. So far I like it. Comparing to some other mics I have right now. Their wa47 sounded massive is the only way I can explain it. Warm with tons of low end but not boomy. The highs were perfect. It did have a mid forward thing going for it. The 251 was more scooped sounding. To scooped for my voice.

@SeawellStudios
@SeawellStudios 4 года назад
As always, audio is subjective but I don't think you can say either mic smoked the other in any application. Our listening preferences can point us one way or the other but they are both world class mics and I said as much in the video. If I had any reason to lean one way or the other it would be financial because the Stam is a good bit cheaper. As much as I disliked the process of ordering from Stam, I still like saving money more and I would have kept it if I thought it was the better mic for me.
@drampadreg1386
@drampadreg1386 3 года назад
@@SeawellStudios I preferred the Stam but it was close, no one smoked anyone there. And I would only order expecting to wait an extra 3 months, then I'm not disappointed. I can see where both could come in handy for various application especially with acoustic jazz in the Monk Coltrane vein. Subttle differences can be a benefit.
@assshakerstudios549
@assshakerstudios549 3 года назад
The Stam had more bass frequencies. You'll notice(possible if you get very serious about this for 20+yrs or so)that the cheaper tube U47 clones have excessive bass to them! And cheaper mics in general have more high end to them(as right of the bat it makes em sound better, kinda like how our ears trick us into thinking louder is better!). So in solo you might pick the Stam, but I can tell you this from experience, it will take me way more time to mix the Stam, than the Flea, and that's because on every track I'll have to EQ correct those takes, so that the whole song sounds it's best, and fits together without any frequency masking, due to the excessive low end build up of said mic! So no the Stam is a far less superior mic, and the quality sucks, as I'm sure you can find on the internet! Got an 1176 Stam Audio sitting in my garage, as it broke 3 months after I got it, took into a very reputable Chicago based fix it place(Steve Albini has used them before, just fyi)and they fixed it, but something else is broke now. And yes I've got power conditioners, voltage regulators(very different than conditioners and way more expensive as well), and climate controlled studio, as it comes out of the box, and into the rack, so zero possibility of it being harmed on my end, just like the above dude mentioned! He's not alone, there are thousands of bad customer service, and terrible quality control coming from Stam! You'd be better of going Warm Audio! At least they take care of their customers, and don't yell at you over the phone, and argue with you telling you that your wrong! WTF is that? I don't normally wanna fist fuck someone's face after talking to them...

STAM reversed the polarity? Can't change it? Wow! And the cable tolerance? Keeps getting stuck? Again, QC issues and long wait times. I DO own SA1073EQ, got it barely used Sounds pretty accurate and will be getting 2 Helios type 69 SA69's shortly but the wait time is a huge problem for STAM as always. Flea's always seem to sound great. Vintage Neumann U47s are not bright mics at all, so its a relative experience. Old Neumann's are OLD, and that is part of their sound and the sound probably changed over time. When a U47 was NEW back 70 years ago, it sounded different. And 70 years ago the preamps were different, the eq's were different, the speakers and headphones were different. I can say that a lot of pre's in the 50's 60's and 70's had some real 'character' and many were built like tanks but they didn't have all the same tech we have now which allows for super clean and sometimes 'characterLESS' sound. So again, it's relative. I have a Bock 47 with a Neumann metal tube and a K47 Neumann capsule. It is not bright, it is warm and designed to be warm, like an original U47. But I wouldn't hesitate if someone put a FLEA 47 in front of me. Get what sounds best to you but high frequency 'hype' is one of the pitfalls of many a newbie thinking that sounds better. Can you sculpt the sound with eq without weird artifacts? Can you sing from soft to loud with flattering characteristics across the amplitude spectrum? Think before you drink the koolaid. Also, if you think one mic covers all bases or all vocalists, that is not realistic. There are mics better suited for brighter sound like a Brauner VM or an AKG C12 clone and the U67 sound works better for some as well. Not all clones stand up to the test of actual usage or to the original. So get what you like and don't think one mic is going to satisfy all your needs. I use a couple of different mics for vocals depending on the style I use for that track. I use a Korby HRS a lot, the Bock as well, Korby RED, 67 style sound, Korby Modified U87, SHURE 353 Ribbon, SHURE 58 Beta for handheld ideas. I was using a Brauner VM1S for some stuff but it was a giant heavy stereo mic and was hard to move around in a tight space. I'm not sure about your method of comparison, I get it but you sang differently in each mic and the FLEA brought out your best expression. But the other method avoids that variable, yet it does not allow for the proximity effect one uses as an experienced vocalist.
@SeawellStudios
@SeawellStudios 2 года назад
Thanks for checking out the video. I don’t think there is a perfect way to do a vocal mic shootout. I do separate takes because how a mic feels singing into it is probably the biggest factor for me. If an artist gives a better, more inspired performance due to what they are hearing through the mic, I’ll take that every time. That’s cool you have some Korby mics. The KAT 4 system is one of my all time favorites. The 67M capsule in particular is really something special! Regarding Stam…since making this video, I’ve owned a Stam SA-4000 MK2(w/ British mod) and an ADG. The build quality of the newer units are noticeably improved! The wait times still seem to be really long but here’s to hoping someday that all gets sorted out 👍🏻 Thanks again for checking out the video & for taking the time to comment.
